Tackled this today with help from your video. I was able to buy just the boots at Advance Auto for about $5/pc. Gave me an excuse to get a small torque wrench for inch pounds, but man it didn't feel like much. I probably would have way over done it by using the German standard Goodentight. Thanks for the videos!

Recently completed this myself for the first time & thought the exact same thing regarding the torque. I actually used a larger torque wrench for foot-pounds & did the conversion. I must have checked like 3-4 different sources to make sure it wasn't a mistake bc to me it really felt like there was still a lot of slack left.

Going to be doing this job with my son tomorrow. I've done plenty of valve cover gaskets over the years, but not much work on Fords, and never a gasket on a plastic valve cover, so a bit of a new experience for me. Your video certainly helps me to familiarize myself with the procedure, and what things I will need to move out of my way to get good access.

A few other tips that helped me: 1. You might need to use a screw driver to LIGHTLY finesse the valve cover itself loose. Mine was on there pretty good, but once I cracked the seal open it came off easy. 2. You can rent a torque ratchet at Auto Zone. $50 deposit that they give back when you return it within 90 days. 3. I ALWAYS flag any plug that I disconnect with painters tape and I label and number them. It only takes a few minutes to do and it makes reassembly stress free and super easy.

xD I just did my valve cover gasket watching a RU-vid video. First time pulling anything with that much shit. Was intimidating at first, but really easy to do. There was so much oil in those little reservoirs that you couldn’t even see the spark plug. Oddly though, it never caused interference. And yes, motor craft doesn’t sell boots separately. The foreman told me that you don’t need to replace the coils unless they fail.
@TheJuanSolid
@TheJuanSolid 5 лет назад
I agree replaceing the coil is not needed, but I would replace the rubber still, you can get aftermarket ngk ones (I got them from Rock Auto). I cleaned a bunch of oil off my old boots and placed them in the spare parts bin. A week later I was organizing and found beaded up oil all over them (including inside). Seemed like the rubber absorbed oil and expelled it over time, sort of like condensation but oil. I just checked the bin again now and there was a light visible film of oil over the boots up to where they were soaking in oil. It's a shame motorcraft won't sell just the boot and spring but I would definitely spend $12 to $15 for new rubber boots after a valve cover gasket change to ensure a clean connection. The ngk spring will not twist on to the coil like the OEM motorcraft ones. I ended up reusing the old springs because I did not like the idea of them being loose in there with just compression holding them together (probably fine). I also had a small scratch, maybe start of a crack, in a coil so I replaced that one only just to be safe. I would reuse that coil but I am very hesitant on reusing any of these boots unless I was in a severe pinch.

This is a super great video for replacing that valve cover gasket! For those back wire retaining clips, they get super brittle because of the constant heat up and cool down of the engine with them sitting right above the exhaust manifold. Plus, ultraviolet light like from the sun is really bad on plastic too. I ended up replacing both of my plastic retaining clips with rubber cushioned metal clamps, 4 x 1/4" lock washers, and 4 x 6M-1.0 nuts, it's a pretty cheap alternative and shouldn't be as susceptible to breaking like the plastic ones are. Thanks again for a great informative video!

Changing my whole valve cover as we speak. Had one of the dog ears where a bolt goes develop a crack. Leaking oil on the exhaust. Changed the gasket 3 times in the 300k I’ve owned the car. Spark plug holes are full of oil every time. It’s my opinion that the plastic valve cover warps over time so the seal always fail

Made 3 rookie mistakes despite the video - d'oh!! 1 - tried to pry off the cover while one of the inner bolts was still tight despite his warning. 2 - small piece of old sealant fell down past the timing chain despite him showing the use of a rag to prevent it. 3 - large rectangular connector on the right side was not fully snapped back in following completion, leaving me with crank, no start until I figured it out.

Hi all. I'm stumped and really need your help and advice regarding a fair bit of white smoke coming out the exhaust until the coolant temp reaches around 60oC. Now I know this would usually be water, but I'm not loosing any coolant at all! ...Nor am I losing oil or have any mayo under the oil filler cap. Equally there's no oil in the coolant reservoir either. No loss of power. Starts and drives fine too, it's just an embarrassing amount of smoke/vapour that almost filled the car park at work yesterday! I always warm up the car before I drive it, and it hasn't overheated before. So, I put it to you great people for your suggestions... Many thanks in advance!

Question. I did this job with the help over your video for my mothers 09 focus S. Thank you so much btw. The question I have is that her car is still really rough idling and I am afraid the pvc valve being clogged somehow caused the gaskets to prematurely break. Is this possible? It's a good video, would make one suggestion though I wouldn't use a rag to wipe the gasket surface or push down near the timing chain because the rags deposit lint they don't want to get into the engine and ultimately end up in the oil pickup screen, I rebuilt transmissions for 40 years in many times I saw do-it-yourselfers wipe parts with rags and you although you can't see it once they filled it with fluid and started the thing all the lint got sucked up into the filter and I saw many times where it actually plugged the filter up. the valve cover operation probably wouldn't put that much lint into the engine but I think I would use paper towels just to avoid any possibility of lint contamination

Great video until the very end when he instructs us to use dialectric grease on the bottom end of the coil. DIALECTRIC GREASE IS NON-CONDUCTIVE. It is an INSULATOR. Most packaging even spells this out for you. Use it only on the ceramic part of the plug in order to prevent the spark from traveling outside the boot. Other than that, this video is very useful. Be warned... if your PCV valve is defective, you will just blow out your brand new seals again after doing this. Don't do this job unless you find out if you have a defective PCV valve first, and that you don't already have too much blow by from cylinder wear. Unfortunately, Ford screwed up on this engine and put the PCV valve down on the block behind the intake manifold and it is a much bigger job to replace it. Others have suggested moving it permanently into the valve cover with some modifications to make it easier to replace (every 50K miles), but I haven't seen any video on just how feasible this really is.

Did the gasket change have the desired effect on the Roughness and Hesitation?

Curious, How did you remove the oil and gunk from the spark plug well before removing the plugs?
@bigpapablu

fill with brake clean, then blow it out with a rag covering the well
@ercilvet
@ercilvet 7 лет назад
I used a turkey baster to get most of the oil removed, then added a solvent( paint thinner, carb cleaner, or just gasoline) to dissolve the remaining oil, then sucked that out with the baster too. Soak up any residue with paper towels and let dry thoroughly. You might want to use the stainless steel basters, the plastic ones are damaged after one use

Brake suction tool, rags, air, and spray cleaning fluid. Brakelen I think, can't remember how to spell it.

That's why I'm watching it twice. What happened to the oily boot?
@scottmmcnamee6813
@scottmmcnamee6813 6 лет назад
You have to change the entire coil pack because chances are the boot is now ruined by the oil (swollen)

Thank you man, but with the oil that was sitting on top of the spark plug, should I just let it run into the the whole or should I try to get it out somehow

I changed my gasket and the hesitation started. My idle is also rough. Could I have made a mistake installing it? Also, I didnt apply that liquid gasket seal.
@thomasherring6640
@thomasherring6640 4 года назад
A little late with a response here, but the liquid gasket seal missing might cause an oil leak, not likely it would cause any other issues. Check the PCV hose which is connected to drivers side rear of the valve cover. If that is leaking, or you forgot to reconnect it, that could cause your problem.

Any info on the hard engagement into 1st or reverse for the 2000 to 2007 ford focus? Engaging 1st i either have to either force it in (not much force but more then any other car ive driven) or shift to 4th then 3rd and itll let me engage 1st no problem. I have a 2005 ford focus zx3 se with a 2.0 dohc

@FordTechMakuloco I'm an avid watcher of your videos. just a small remark, that the title of your video should have been 2005-2010, rather than 2005-2011, as the fourth generation ford focus did not have the same engine as the second and third, the duratech engine, I mean. all the best.
@FordTechMakuloco
@FordTechMakuloco 5 лет назад
The title is corrrect as the focus did not change until 2012 in America.

Hi, good video, question, is it worth putting sealant on the three gaskets in the center as these seem to be the only ones that leak.
