I'm going to outline a 2005 and newer axle swap on an OBS Ford pickup in this video. The swap is completed enough on the truck in the video to demonstrate the install. I've logged over 200,000 miles on my other truck that has been 2005+ axle swapped without issues, and the truck in the video is done the same as the other one I did 13 years ago. If you found my video and/or description helpful please like and subscribe to the channel for more OBS content!
This video is directly showing the lowest you can be on an 05+ Swap using unmodified OEM Components. There are a million ways you can configure this swap, but this way is using as many OEM Components as possible. This way, when you purchase a rolling chassis, it gives you the ability to use as many parts as possible without having to buy more parts elsewhere. It also gives you a great baseline to start with, as the swap gives a little bit of lift, so you'd be able to adjust your height, up or down, based on your needs by purchasing other suspension components such as lift coils, or lowering coils etc.
If you're looking for a specific piece of information related to this video, please comment, and I will respond with an answer for you, please browse the comments for a question before asking.
Some details about the swap:
-2005 to 2016 Axles are the only ones with a VSS in the rear axle.
-All bolts are 1/2" for bracket installation.
-The 99-04 Leaf springs are not required for the swap, you can run your OBS leaf springs, or any setup you'd like.
-The Transfer case is also not required, but then you're requiring a conversion joint (Neapco 2-3050) for the front, and possible driveshaft modification, and the rear driveshaft will need a flange (Spicer 3-2-1859, for a 1350 joint) for the rear axle installed on the driveshaft.
Something to keep in mind when purchasing pre-built parts, and their track bar mounts will be designed to use their respective coil buckets.
SKY Coil Buckets add 1" of lift
RYD Coil Buckets add 3" of lift

PMF Track Bar: (Choose lowered if using OEM Coil Buckets)
www.pmfsuspension.com/2005-2016-Ford-F-250350-Direct-Replacement-Adjustable-Trackbar_p_57.html
Ill cover the transfer case install, and rear leaf install in another video, as those aren't required for the swap.
For the 2005-2007 Steering box, You'll need the following information, the power steering line details are setup for a truck with hydroboost.
M14x2.0 - 140mm Bolts required (3 required)
9/16” Drill Bit for frame holes
Gates 365892 Pressure Hose for Hydroboost (05 Superduty)
Gates 370660 Return Hose (92-96/97 OBS)
Gates 365930 Pressure Hose for Hydroboost (92-97 F-superduty)

-Remove Booster side nut from Gates 365892, set aside.
-Install Booster side nut from Gates 365930 onto Gates 365892 Hose and flare.
-Remove nut from Gates 370660 Return hose
-Install Booster side nut from Gates 365892 onto Gates 370660 Return line and flare.
-Massage lines to fit 05 Box.

Great video. I'm not using RYD because they have horrible customer service. I actually found a guy out of Arizona, Blowing Diesel Designs, who offers what I feel is the best designed "kit" if that's the route folks want to go.
@GarrettsOBSGarage
@GarrettsOBSGarage Год назад
I’ve seen multiple “in-house” kits offered by guys over the years, and I’m not lumping the one you recommended into this because I haven’t seen it. But, the ones I have seen have been poor quality and poor customer service. So bad to the point that people never got their products and the products that did get sent out weren’t trust worthy. It would be nice to see some more quality components show up on the market. RYD has its pitfalls, that is true, which is why I recommended the SKY one in this video.

Yeah, I run a van setup on the trucks, its an easier setup to run, and the remote reservoir makes it nice. I was able to use the stock F-Superduty lines with a little massaging.

You have a great informational video. The overwhelming bent for these conversions favors the lifting of the truck. Thank you for recognizing the needs of those who wish to maintain a sane center of balance for highway driving. I concur with your (and, obviously, Ford's) recognition of the superiority of coil over leaf spring suspension. Still, I remain disappointed with the move to the Super Duty axles with their metric bolt pattern and [front] unit bearing hubs. In my experience, traditional rebuildable/greaseable bearings are superior to unit type.
@GarrettsOBSGarage
@GarrettsOBSGarage Год назад
Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed the video! The unit bearings are not as bad as people make them out to be. The 2005+ ones are much more resilient than the 99-04 ones.

Doing this swap for the benefit of a solid axle and better ride justify it IMO, everything else is a bonus, I converted my 2wd and this was essentially the same cost as an OBS D60 except better in so many ways. otherwise its a plain looking truck kept it as low as possible lol, still fits in the garage.

Super informative, thank you for sharing. Are there any benefits of using any particular year of axles ranging from 05-16?
@GarrettsOBSGarage
@GarrettsOBSGarage Год назад
There are subtle differences between the years. 05-07 is my favorite year range because the coil buckets on the frame are flat, in 2008, they added a large dimple on the back of the bucket which needs removed to use them on the OBS. The rear axle shock brackets bolt on, which makes it easier to flip the one forward. The steering box, should you use it, bolts right up to the OBS steering shaft. I also like the way the front sway bar mounts to the axle. So the 05-07 is the most desirable in my opinion. However, the rear pinion bearing in that era can be problematic due to its size.

@GarrettsOBSGarage
@GarrettsOBSGarage 3 месяца назад
No cutting involved! And I would NEVER use OBS coil spring mounts with SD springs. The top of the spring and retaining system is completely different and in my opinion unsafe to use the SD coil in the OBS bucket. If you want to do the 05+ swap, always use the correct meshing parts to ensure it’s 100% safe.

I haven't put any miles on this truck since I put the rebuilt engine in it, but this truck has bigger Rosewood injectors in it, however, its a 1995 block, so its a little louder than the 97 and later 7.3 engines. nice video… why didn’t you keep the old 94-97 manual transfer case? i thought you could keep that and not have to change?
@GarrettsOBSGarage
@GarrettsOBSGarage 3 месяца назад
The reason for the change was to run the 05+ front driveshaft. The 1356 from an F350 isn’t very hard to find, but the front driveshaft is. The 4407 for an F350 is very difficult to find. So, to run the 05+ shaft, I wanted a front flat flange on the transfer case. So it was easier to swap to the 99-04 transfer case.

Thanks for all the info and walking us through this! Makes it so much easier for us DIY guys! Great content!!
@GarrettsOBSGarage
@GarrettsOBSGarage Год назад
So, its a matter of preference for the box. If you decide to use the OBS box, you have to have your pitman arm reamed out. Which can be an issue if you don't have a machine shop to do it for you. RYD Sells the pitman arm already reamed if you decide to go that route. I've been told that the 05 Box has a little more "throw", and turns sharper, and also turns faster than the OBS box. I haven't driven the truck with the 05 Box enough to get a good feel for it yet. If you choose to use the 05-07 box, you have a couple modifications to do. My instructions are setup for the hydroboost setup, since all of my trucks are hydroboost. I haven't done one with a vacuum setup. This is how I did the lines on the truck in the video, and I haven't seen what others have done to complete this task, but I know that this works. M14x2.0 - 140mm Bolts required (3) 9/16” Drill Bit for frame hole enlargement. Gates 365892 Pressure Hose for Hydroboost (05 Superduty) Gates 370660 Return Hose (92-96 OBS) Gates 365930 Pressure Hose for Hydroboost (92-97 F-superduty) 3/8” O-Ring Flaring tool -Remove Booster side nut from Gates 365930, set aside. -Remove Booster side nut from Gates 365892, set aside. -Install Booster side nut from Gates 365930 onto Gates 365892 Hose and flare. -Remove nut from Gates 370660 Return hose -Install Booster side nut from Gates 365892 onto Gates 370660 Return line and flare. -Massage lines to fit 05 Box. In the end, its a matter of what you want to use, and what you're willing to do.

So what’s the parts list I’d need if I’m looking at a part out truck.
@GarrettsOBSGarage
@GarrettsOBSGarage Год назад
Basically, you’d want the rolling chassis, but if you’re looking at only parts from the chassis. Coil buckets Radius arm mounts Steering box (if you choose). 05-07, 08+ is more difficult to use. Then obviously your axles and attached parts like steering and track bar and wheels. If you choose to use sway bars, you’ll need those as well. The driveshafts are a plus to have so you can use flanges or the front shaft as a whole. If you want to do the transfer case swap, then you’d need that too. It depends on how in depth you want to go, and also your skill set.

@GarrettsOBSGarage
@GarrettsOBSGarage Год назад
The goal isn’t coils. The goal is bigger brakes. Better turning radius. Better ride. Better tire wear. It also opens up the door for much better options in the aftermarket mass produced suspension components. You also end up getting a disk brake rear axle also doing the swap. The solo kit isn’t bad, but it’s not cheap and you’re still dealing with the Dana 50, and pivot brackets.

I’ve heard of HAD. But, never had dealings with them. They don’t advertise stuff like that though. You’d have to call and request it. Me and another guy spent about 2 months trying to find an F350 4407. The F250 4407 is plentiful. If you find an OEM F350 yoke, you’ll pay out the nose for that, they sell locally for 150-200 when they show up. I’ve seen them for 250 online from used and new retailers. Then you’d need the F350 front shaft also, which is what I was going for. The DC front shaft. Couldn’t find a used one around anywhere, and a new one was 500 bucks. That’s why I recommend the 271.
