top axle stand 😝 good tips thanks 👍 the bottom ball joint in the manual states you should lower the sub frame 30mm to avoid damage to the hydro bush i drilled out the ball joint rivets just done top mount strut fitted a new bolt in ball joint no more lowering the sub frame going to drill other side out too for future worn parts.

This is a great (2 part) video. Helps massively as my X Type needs the same thing done. I have seen on Jaguar forums that you need to be very careful of the quality / brand of bearing you buy (some have the wrong number of magnetic segments and the ABS gets very confused). Then you have to do the job again but with the correct bearing..! Not sure where (in the UK) I can find the bearing puller / pusher tool you hired. Pretty sure I can't hire...which may mean it is financially more cost effective to get a garage to do it sadly.

This is actually what happened to me! I used a National brand bearing first, which had a different magnetic encoder and I needed to do this a second time with an SKF bearing. Caused all sort of issues with stalling and ABS light. The specific puller I used is not necessary, any puller with the right size cups should work.

I have a 2004 xtype. There is a set screw (allen head) on every nut . What a pain to loosen up.

Your video helped me out a lot but I believe you should have packed bearing grease int to the bearing before installing it. Not just on the outside but the internals of the bearing
@in-depthdiy2123
@in-depthdiy2123 Год назад
Most newer cars, including this one, have a pre-greased and completely sealed bearing design. There's no need and no way to pack them further than the factory does.

where do I get that Bearing puller set? Looks like it was made for the Jag. There's a few on Amazon also parts suppliers have them to lend. Great video!!
@in-depthdiy2123
@in-depthdiy2123 2 года назад
It was a rental from the local auto parts store. It wasn't specific to the Jag, but was made for doing this exact process which is similar for many types of vehicles.

Why didn't you show setting the hub assembly back onto ball joint? Your video skipped right pass that part and I cant find another video that shows it.
@in-depthdiy2123
@in-depthdiy2123 3 года назад
What specifically are you having trouble with? Usually it's easiest to pry down on the arm so it's below the hub, get the hub resting on the ball joint and then push the hub around until it slides into place. Sometimes helps to have a second set of hands to do that.

Great video- Where did you purchase the bolt for the ball joint ? If you don’t heat these up or use the wrong tools they typically brake. I also have an x type.. and could use a purchase that bearing press kit as well. 👍🏻

The bolt was from the local hardware store. Used a 10.9 grade nut/bolt.

@@in-depthdiy2123 Hey man... I finally got around to doing this job and I ended up renting the same tool as you mention here, but I don't have an adapter in the kit that will just fit the outer race yet make it through the hub. You had one in your kit?
@snatr
@snatr 3 года назад
@@in-depthdiy2123 Nevermind. I ended up using a smaller adapter anyway and it did the job. I really thought it was gonna gut out the bearing and leaving the outer race stuck in there but it didn't.

That control arm... one bolt looks impossible to remove. The bolt head is on the top and the nut is on the bottom. How do u remove it without removing the cradle..?
@in-depthdiy2123
@in-depthdiy2123 5 лет назад
You have to remove the bolts from the back side of the cradle to drop it down slightly. There's no way to remove it without lowering the cradle.
@mattcaligiuri4539

In-depth DIY ok so it can flex. The previous owner destroyed the ball joint on my jag, and I was just going to put in a bolt on ball joint. I figured I can just unbolt the ball joint instead of removing it from the knuckle, so I don’t destroy the boot like the old one.

13:53" How the hell did you push the control arm down so easily? I have 40lbs of dead weight on it and I can barely move it with a pry bar. It moves but not enough. I calculate it would need 200lbs of down force to do it.
@in-depthdiy2123
@in-depthdiy2123 3 года назад
It was a new control arm so the rubber may have more give. They make a lever arm specifically for bending the control arms down, but I usually just use a bar or in this case my body weight.

@@in-depthdiy2123 Thanks for the reply. I ended up creating a special tool. :D
@snatr
@snatr 3 года назад
Try loosening the control arm in the rear and remove the long vertical bolt on the arm. Then you should be able to swing the arm away from the frame and the ball joint should just drop right out (if it's already loose). Just watch that you don't pull the axle out too far from the tranny at the same time, there's a seal in there.
@brokenmotorwagen1328
@brokenmotorwagen1328 3 года назад
@@snatr Thanks but it looks like the control arm bolts are not easy to get to. I created a 4 foot long lever that made it much easier to push the control arm down.

Thanks for sharing! I'm just curious whether you had any abs issues after the job. I've seen some posts (here's one: www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x-type-x400-14/abs-light-after-front-bearing-change-175802/) where there are some bearings out there being sold that have the incorrect amount of magnetic segments. That would really suck after a job like that! PZ: I usually work alone also, but thought it might have been nice to have someone apply the brakes for you while you tightened the axle nut 😉
@in-depthdiy2123
@in-depthdiy2123 3 года назад
Funny you mention that because yes, I did have that problem and did this job twice! I used an International bearing first, which caused an ABS light and also randomly killed the engine while braking. Switched it out with a SKF bearing from Jaguar dealer directly and everything was fine.
