2005 Jaguar XKR (X100) Review - Is This Bargain Classic Jaguar Worth Buying?

Today I'm looking at the Jaguar XKR - a car born of the aging XJS platform, and used to give Jaguar something fresh at a time when their lineup was becoming stale.
Now available at bargain prices, is the XKR worth taking a risk on?

My dad has one of these he’s owned since new. One day he called me up and said ‘how would you like to have that car one day’. I said yes please, and he promptly went and spend 15k having the entire car restored to ‘as new’ so that it would last another 20-30 years and then he could leave it to me. What a total legend.

The rear end of the XK8 never looked right, even Clarkson commented on that when he gave the XK8 a glowing review on TG back in 95. I bought this XKR 4.2 Supercharged Victory Edition from new in 2006 when I lived in Vegas. It has a carbon interior with SatNav instead of the wood & dials & is painted in Copper Black metallic paint. The wheels are 19 inch. I still own it. And in 14 years of ownership, the only thing that has failed are a headlight bulb, two dashboard lights and a front wheel ABS sensor. It's also rust free. It does 24mpg (US) which is about 29 mpg in the UK around towns and over 30 mpg cruising on the motorway. It really is a head turner. And super comfy for long distance cruising. 400HP is plenty for most crappy roads anyway. There are better cars dynamically of course but few sound like that supercharged engine when you floor it. I think your review is spot on - a really nice looker even if flawed. But then so is Angelina Jolie.

I’ve owned a 2005 XKR 4.2S for 7 years. Love it - and can never bring myself to trade it in. Equally amazing to glide around in as full gas! The cabin is a nice place to spend time in especially with the carbon fibre dash. But you have to stay on top of the maintenance (mechanical, underside and bodywork). Few cars look as good from so many angles.

Yep and the nice thing is with the XJS-derived underpinnings/somewhat old-school construction, that I've found it remarkably easy to work on compared to a lot of luxury tourers. The diff drain/fill plug is always a nightmare though.

Got one, 2004 4.2 convertible auto. Yes, it has faults but boy does it have character. We all have days where we want to drive like James Bond and days where we want a relaxing, luxurious spin. Not bad on the supermarket run either. It's not the best at anything, it's the whole package that makes it the best.

Had a 2002 Xkr convertible since 2013. Can not stress the rust issues enough if anyone goes to look at one. If you can see it on the arches or sills then it’s going to need a fair bit of work. Chains, tensioners and water pumps should of all been done on 4.0 engines by now, check receipts. Common myth that gearboxes are sealed for life, they are not and should have new fluid around 75k. The gearbox and engine are easily reset for shift points/drivability.Really nice cars and totally worth the effort, plus there’s a wealth of information available through very friendly forums.

I absolutely love my 98 Phoenix red XKR. It has this face lift and 20” Detroits. I still pinch myself after 5 years of ownership. Running costs not bad. Parts fairly reasonable and a “blast” to Cornwall from Oxfordshire averaged 23mpg (as per on board computer) or one tank of fuel. A lot of smile per mile. Worth every penny. Nice honest review btw.

Having just bought a 1998 XKR I found the review very fair and accurate but a little harsh about comments on the gearbox. I was lucky enough to own an E-Type back in the 70's and the XKR is a worthy and safer car to drive. Prices have bottomed out and they offer great motoring with no depreciation.

It's a personal choice, as an owner, I'm very happy with the xkr, the gearbox is fine, the motor is incredible, much more power than most if us will ever need. the handling is more than adequate. I took my son on a road trip to italy last summer, it's one of the most beautiful and comfortable cars you can drive. Average 28mpg, best was 33mpg with the air con off. I just love it. Always wanted an iso grifo but, the xkr is equal to the best and, so affordable.

Proud owner of a 2004.5 Platinum Silver XKR in extremely good condition, the interior is basically mint in black leather but a little better than the one in this video, I say that because my driver's seat is not warped out of shape like on this car, that happens so often I know as getting in and out of these is a special slide in technique lol, engine miles just shy of 100k miles (156,000 k's im my country NZ), I've owned her for 4 years now. I never drive it in the rain if possible and she's always garaged. It was a Jap import, with no rust underneath! I sadly may be forced to sell her due to my financial position, no money owing or anything like that, other crap like loss of employment - I don't want to sell her of course but if someone offered me a good enough offer I would more than likely give her up.

Very nice review, Jay, of a very nice car. As regards prices going up, I am not sure this is going to happen anytime soon. Even the prices of the X100's predecessor, the XJS, haven't really gone up although it is much more of a true classic Jag than the X100. Also much fewer were built. It's a total mystery to me why the XJS (I'm talking about the pre-facelift model until 1991), which can be had as a V12 convertible, with its beautiful lines remains so underrated.

You can turn the traction control off entirely which I do only in the dry, you are asking for trouble if you turn it off in the wet. The interior is the perfect size for me though, my mechanic moans when he has to get into it which I always find very amusing. It's what a GT really is, perfect for long distance driving. Automatic gearbox isn't perfect but it's smooth, with the J gate you can modulate the power much easier. A manual gearbox would have been really nice. It's one of the best looking cars ever made.

We are gentlemen of taste. They did make one with a manual, the XKR-R. Was a 4 litre tuned to 450bhp. I recall it on Top Gear. Sadly it never made it to production. As Clarkson said likely because it would walk all over the rival Aston and Ford couldn't have that.

@@sparky4878 Yea I have seen that video a few times. At the time Aston and Jaguar where in some sort of relationship and didn't want to hinder each others sales. You can buy a LSD for the XK8/R so it brings you a bit closer to the XKR-R. Small things like changing the exhaust will net you about 20hp for £500. An upper and lower smaller diameter supercahrger pulley will get you a little more power as well. Really the best way to make big power is to repalce the supercharger with a twin screw type. This will get you to around 500hp. I have seen a guy who is using a highly modified 4.4 AJV8 from a Range Rover putting out 650hp. Really I think the best value for money is to change the exhaust and fit the LSD. Everything else will just be a money sink.

@@rayreinhard1077 Yes but it's not overly expensive from what I have seen. Having the bonnet changed to have better ventilation is also a very good idea. Arden do one. To behonest though the car is plenty powerful enough as is.

Looks to be the same colour as mine, midnight black, but has a contrast interior (red and black) that I love and sitting on original 20s. I do prefer the interior having the three dials (clock, volts and oil temp) against the digital screen. They certainly do have presence on the road, massive car with a tiny cabin. Sound incredible with the V8 roar and supercharger scream. Great for fun on an A-road or a long comfy drive, but for enjoying the twisty stuff then I hop into something else.

Hello ... they also made a Phoenix Red which is very close to Ferrari red, more "orange" in it. Phoenix Red was the official launch colour of the XKR from 1998. Check out the launch brochure and the press kits from that time. I have a 1999 Phoenix Red with only 16,000 miles on the clock. Puts a silly grin on my face every time I look.

I always think the key to buying Jaguars of this, and any other vintage, is to check the bodywork for rust; this sounds fine, but once bodywork panels become unavailable it can be a hugely expensive exercise to replace them.

I really like this car. Sometimes thinking about buying one. Not too old to really use it and it still looks really fantastic. The only Jaguar I like more is the XJ-S 5.3 GT Coupé. The first version from 1975 onwards is just stunningly beautiful and cool. Also cool: The XJR-S 6.0 Coupe of the 3rd series.

It's a sexy car, a car I did consider buying and sometimes kick myself for not doing so but Aston is just that bit more sexy. Yes the VH platform Vantage shares so many parts with Jag, Ford and Volvo but I agree with you, these cars are now classics and wonderful for it.

Jay, superb video, and despite the obvious flaws, I recently succumbed and bought a 2000 XKR. As a 6'2", ex-rugby player, to say the interior is compact, is an understatement, but by god it is beautiful and along with my 986s (in white), I can't help but stop, turn back and look at it, every time I get out of it.

Having had a 2013 Mini S Hardtop with the rare rear seat delete option, it was a very hard sell. Even though the factory seats in the rear of a 2 door Mini are completely useless, apparently people want them. I can agree that an XK8/XKR with this option would be very difficult to sell.

My ‘03 XKR is my pride and joy, such a beautiful body shape. One of the last “classically” styled production cars. These benefit from an ECU flash, high quality synthetic oils (I use Amsoil), downsized supercharger pulleys (larger crank pulley too) and methanol. I’m pushing nearly 480 whp on a warm humid day. More is available with a twin screw supercharger. There’s an old video if anyone is interested on my channel.

I've owned 2 of these ok non supercharged. Agree with most of what you say. One point never mentioned in buyers guides, is always check the heater gets hot I mean HOT. These jags have a separate electric pump to boost circulation for the heater. They do fail. Officially you have to drop the gear box to change! There is a cheat, remove the inlet manifold. A bit fiddly but doable. Heater pumps are cheap enough

My dream two-car garage is a black XKR Coupe and a black XJR from the same time. I've wanted this set since I was in high school. And I still do. In fact, I would still take it over the last and most recent versions. Sadly, for some reason, Jaguar decided to kill off both of these classic ranges and haven't even bothered to replace them with anything.

Great review, James. Just a bit of advice for those wishing to purchase one of the fabulous machines. You mentioned the Nikasil issues with the 4 litre engines. However, the pre 2002 4 litres had plastic timing chain tensioners which need to be replaced with the post 2002 metal versions from the later 4.2 V8. It is imperative all owners consider this upgrade, because serious engine damage can result if the plastic ones break. There will be a coming together of pistons & valves. Budget £800-1000 for a specialist to carry out the work. Parts are 200-300 quid. Also consider if a pre 2002 car changing the water pump for an upgraded one with metal impeller, instead of plastic. Also upgrade the plastic thermostat housing for a metal version. All parts available aftermarket from specialists such as the aforementioned Tom Lenthall. Other Jag specialists are of course available :-)

To clarify: were the 2002 4-litre ones OK (metal tensioners etc) or do you really mean post-2002 ie 2003? Sorry if this sounds picky but I’ve been eyeing up a 2002 4 litre…
@zoerandall-rea4459
@zoerandall-rea4459 Год назад
Hi Arnold, you would need to purchase a 4.2 litre car to avoid any issues with the timing chain tensioners. They introduced the 4.2 in 2002. So yes, as long as it's a 4.2 you'll be ok. Thanks.
