If you have a 2005 or 2006 suzuki rmz 450 and haven't had a problem with your timing going out you are a lucky one. But I have to say it will be coming.
I should of switch to a manual cam chain tensioner a long time ago. The stock tensioner got so weak that I would set the timing put it all back together and just warming up the bike I could snap the throttle and get the exhaust cam to jump a tooth or two. The fix ...... Get a MANUAL CAM CHAIN TENSIONER !!!!
A Manual Tensioner isn't expensive a will save you big $$$$ before you bend a valve or something else goes wrong. This bike still rips loaded with goodies.

Just received a brand new OEM tensioner and cam chain for a customers 2005 rmz450. Put them both in and was dumbfounded when I saw the brand new tensioner was just as loose if not worse as the tensioner I replaced… Found this video and have a PSR manual tensioner on the way. Thanks for posting this!

I am doing the same thing to my bike this weekend. Automatic adjusters are just worn out since when these bikes were made. I am going to do the cam chain while I am at it. Very cheap maintenance to keep an old 450 from blowing up! :)

damn, I just put my RMZ450 2005 back together, but did not put a new tensioner in, and the damn thing came out of timing.... I knew that was the issue. Thanks for posting.

Thanks Chris, your explanation was on point, after watching the video I felt confident enough to tackle the Rmz450 👌

Hey your stock tensioner isn't broken. It has a nut and an Allen key bolt on the side of it. You loosen the nut then the Allen bolt and the spring loaded pin inside pushes the pin against the chain guide . It makes a click noise. Then you tighten the Allen key and then the nut. And your done. Yours was just not tightened properly so the pin was moving and the chain was skipping.

@@chrisgood4199 Those stock tensioners are flawed.. even with the lockout nut tightened they are prone to coming loose. What happens is that at high engine speed when the drive train suddenly slows or stops(rear braking) the slack side of the chain suddenly experiences tension due to the cams inertia from previously turning quickly. Eventually enough cycles of sudden braking and excessive tension on what is normally the slack side pushes the tensioner back in even with the lockout nut properly tensioned.. just as if you tensioned it outside the bike and started tapping it in with a hammer... that little lockout bolt pressing on the smooth pin wont afford enough friction to stop it from backing off. I made pins to go inside my tensioner to make it impossible to back off but ill be getting one like you have now installed as before i knew this i ended up replacing exhaust valves..

According to the manual the cam chain tensioner should be adjusted every 12 hours... I also received a letter from the factory that said not to rotate the motor after adjusting the CCT.. just set it and button it up.... I think this new cam chain adjuster is a good Idea no spring to wear out.. just don't over tighten...

But on the Manual it says the roller pins need 13 pins from the timing mark to the other csm timing mark

Do you have to pull the top off the head? My timing is fine I just have a leaking gasket so I bought the same thing you have it was not much more than just a gasket.

Probably wouldn’t have to but might be a good idea to feel how tight the chain actually is once you put the new one in. Just for piece of mind once I put the manual tensioner in, I never had any more issues with the timing, wish I had done it way sooner

When I went to put mines on it was very tight and can’t get it on cams the tensioner is off. Did anyone else have this problem?

I have the same bike. I notice yours is fairly easy to over, mine is hard so kick. I have to use all my weight to kick it over and I'm 220. what do you think would cause it to be hard like that. and to top it off it takes about 25 kicks to get running.
@chrisgood4199
@chrisgood4199 8 лет назад
I would check the exhaust gap if it's on the large side your automatic decompression might not be doing any thing. These bikes have a know problem with the auto-decompression I kicker my kick starter right off cracking the case due to the bunk auto-decompession. I ended up getting new cases from suzuki and rebuilt it. But i did change hot cams. The new cdi box also helped starting it.

Hey Richard Gray I have an 05 rmz450 and high compression piston and all reworked, there is a sweet spot to start the kick or there is a lot of resistance but find her G-Spot and one kick and she starts right up lol every bike is different but there is a knack you have to find on your bike once you do its a lot easier from then on.

Richard gray I bought an 06 not long ago and it's got more compression than any 450 I've ever had. (This previous owner did say the engine is rebuilt fresh from top to bottom so I originally thought that was my issue.) Did you get yours figured out? I'd like to hear about it. Thanks...

@@wombatofficial5336 the marks on from the two holes in the ignition cover. then i'd your piston from the spark plug hole to make sure. and then each cam has a mark as well then lines up with the head surface if never done before there is also probably a mark on the cam chain too

When this happened did u lose compression

When you snapped the throttle It would jump a couple teeth putting the timing out then impossible to start.

chris good I got that same year big and it would bog kinda when riding then I had the carb rebuilt and then yesterday I was kicking it and hear a sound and it lost Compression and I took Valve cover off and it was outa time
@chrisgood4199
@chrisgood4199 4 года назад
Peyton Bowman they have a known issue with the automatic decompression on the exhaust cam bit that makes it impossible to kick. I cracked my case when I first got it from kicking it. Seemed to go away when I change to the hot cams. I’m just putting a new vid together cause two weeks ago I cracked it again and tried a jb weld carbon fibre fix
