Removing the rear differential in a 4th gen 4runner. This 2005 Toyota 4Runner Sport is a 2 wheel drive but the 4x4 version should be the same. I show how I remove Toyota rear differentials using basic hand tools.The Toyota Tacoma should have the same 3rd member unless it has the E-locker option. If you have a locker then you have to remove the actuator 1st and then the 3rd member. I don't fully remove the axle shaft because you have to remove the disc brake setup in order to remove the parking brake cable.
Here is the next video. 2005 Toyota 4Runner Rear Differential Rebuild - Bearing Replacement • 2005 Toyota 4Runner Re...

What do you do if one of the studs snaps off ? Can a stud be replaced or repaired? Is there a hack to just leave it, seal it off somehow? Thanks !

Easily the most useful video I’ve found for working on my runner. Everyone always wants to do a bunch of extra talking and editing and looks like they aren’t even checking their viewfinders when setting up camera angles. Very well done sir and thank you for the help 💪🏽💪🏽

Great video, nice to see it happen before I go at this to get it rebuilt. I can’t seem to find any used axles

Awesome video. I am doing this to my truck this weekend. Suggestion: use extra jack stands to support the axle shafts when they are sticking out of the diff. Also, for the brake line connection, instead of disconnecting the lines you can grind into the bracket and slide the soft/hard line out without having to disconnect...cut only enough so just the hard line slides through and remove the little retaining bracket first. Easier to explain with a visual but prevents having to deal with bleeding and brake fluid

I hope i get a quick response. My truck wont go foward or backwards there are some loud loud metal on metal noises. I assumed it was the rear dif since thats where the noise was coming from. Im on an incline and i did everything step by step. The drive shaft did not come out smooth. I pulled it back and it did slide down but not all the way not enough for me to leave the drive shaft hainging

@ThePracticalMechanic

Probably a 3/16” vacuum cap. I’ve never really checked and I just grab one from my tool box.

9 of the 10 studs from the axle housing came out when I was loosing the nuts for the third member. I see none of yours did that. I ordered replacement studs from Toyota that I assume can just be threaded back in. They included green thread locker on them. For example 8 x 90116-A0018 and 2 x 90116-A0115

This video helped me out! Thanks! Do you use any kind of permatex or gasket when reinstalling? Between the 3rd member and the rear axle housing?
@ThePracticalMechanic
@ThePracticalMechanic 9 месяцев назад
If I use a gasket I normally install dry. If I don’t use a gasket I put a thin bead of rightstuff RTV on the housing before installing the differential.

Great video! I watched some other videos that say the sway bar has to be disconnected to remove the third member. It looks like you had no issue. Did the swaybar links have to be disconnected?
@MarioSaavedraA
@MarioSaavedraA 2 года назад
I don’t think it has to be disconnected since the 3rd member is attached to the rear axle and the sway bar is located behind it so normally it won’t trouble you when working.

HI do you think 06 tacoma and 4runner are the same on the differential? I trying to see if I can use the disc brake system from the 4runner to install in the Tacoma
@ThePracticalMechanic
@ThePracticalMechanic 3 года назад
I'm not sure if they are the same or not since I haven't tried a Disc conversion on a Taco. If its a easy swap there will probably be a bunch of writeups online

It likely never was. We see it all the time unfortunately. I had a 2004 in the shop last week with 180,000 and it looked like the plug had never been removed. Of course the fluid was oxidized and had slight metal flake. We replaced the fluid and cleaned out the vent. Hopefully the owner can get a few more seasons out of it.

trying to find the inner bearing for the third member on my 2005 4runner JTEBU17R950066959 A01A/A750F 4runner. Several parts places have a bearing that they say fits the 2004 4runner BUT then say none that match the 43:11 3.09. Any suggestions on where to get one? Thanks

I did all these steps, however, I was not able to get the carrier assembly out. I was able to pull it part of the way but it seem caught on something. Yes I pulled the axels out.
@ThePracticalMechanic
@ThePracticalMechanic 4 года назад
Sometimes you have to rotate the pinion and the ring gear will roll it out for you. Otherwise you may have to lift up vertically on the whole unit as you remove the carrier from the axle housing.
@yuriorlov47
@yuriorlov47 4 года назад
@@ThePracticalMechanic do you mean twist the entire carrier housing or twist the pinion to move the gears a little?
@ThePracticalMechanic
@ThePracticalMechanic 4 года назад
Evan Valek just twist the pinion to move the gears a little. Also it just occurred to me. Does it have a locking differential? If so you have to make sure it’s in the locked position to remove it from the housing.
@yuriorlov47
@yuriorlov47 4 года назад
@@ThePracticalMechanic there is a button on near the shift lever, which shows the vehicle drive train with an x through the middle of the driver train. Should I have engaged that before trying to take out the carrier?
@ThePracticalMechanic
@ThePracticalMechanic 4 года назад
Evan Valek if it has the locker it will have wires going to the carrier assembly that you would have unplugged. If there are no wire then you don’t need to worry about it. The tolerances are pretty tight to get the unit to slide out. Normally they slide out about an inch and get stuck, then I have to wiggle them around until it comes out. How far does your come out before it gets stuck?
@lifeproject9182
@lifeproject9182 11 месяцев назад
Why did he take the brakes off for?
@ThePracticalMechanic
@ThePracticalMechanic 11 месяцев назад
Because the axle is inserted into the 3rd member. You have to slide the axle out far enough to remove the 3rd member. The hard brake line prevents this. I was doing some other repairs on this vehicle iirc so I removed the caliper and rotors.

Why wouldn't you remove the rear calipers so that you don't need to bleed the brakes?
@ThePracticalMechanic
@ThePracticalMechanic 5 лет назад
Seth Bassler the brake line is mounted to the backing plate where it connects to the brake hose. Most require unhooking the line at the same location to release the hose from the bracket.
