While getting a free tire rotation, Cameraman Brian was told he needed a front wheel bearing on his 2005 Toyota 4Runner. I told him it would make a great video so we brought it into the shop to shoot the video.
This job turned out to be more than I bargained for. I ended up getting quite a work out from swinging my hammers. Yes, I used all my hammers on this job. I also put some miles in chasing the right parts. If you watching this Moog, change your listing for this part as it does NOT include the hub as you have listed in your catalog. In fact, I don't see how you could include the hub without also including the fasteners for the wheel bearing. There's no way to get those in there without separating the hub from the bearing.
Still, we got through it and made this video. Cameraman Brian is now VERY happy with his new wheel bearing, hub, and axle.
As for symptoms, he had an occasional noise when moving from reverse to drive, but that's about it. Like I say in the video, when wheel bearings get quiet, that's when you start to worry. Also, a problem like this does NOT cause a vibration, according to popular belief.
If you decide to do this job yourself, I recommend you get a hub as well as a bearing to avoid all the issues I went through in this video. Also, a shop press would come in very handy for this job.

To me, these struggle videos are the most educational. There's a lot you can learn from the manuals/books, but persevering in the face of one bastard of a job is a real skill in itself.

i know it looked caveman style but I've seen this done like this before and have done it myself and the bearing held up fine, you have to do with what you have to work with, I own a 20 ton press and things are easier with it, watching this video sure brought back memories. Keep them coming Eric, you rock.

Jonka Olofsson There are things you must not get angry at. You can get angry when you mess up spark plug threads, or drill into a coolant jacket. But jobs like this, you just have to keep your head cool and think of ways to get that part off.

Yeah, i hate it but i've always had a bad temper and very little patience. It's hard to change but it's absolutely true that patience is important when working on cars!

Jonka Olofsson He's a professional. This is a semi daily thing in mechanics, most things don't go the way they are supposed to go. And he didn't know about the hub before this or he would have bought one upfront.

Thanks for uploading but seriously this was like a tutorial on how not to change a wheel bearing. Even after the disaster of trying to split the old one beating the new one with a hammer is a terrible idea. You need a press.

Thanks for showing your struggles Eric. I have some tips for those who wish to replace the front wheel bearing and reuse the hub: Use a vice, or two 6x6 boards and make an opening wider than the bearing assembly. Use two pieces of flat bar steel (something without a lot of flex), place the bearing hub down and wedge the steel between the hub and bearing housing. You can also remove a few lug bolts to gain more clearance. At this point, the bearing housing bolt heads will be resting on the steel bars. Next place the 35mm socket that you used to remove the axle nut and set it against the backside of the hub- the socket is acting as a punch which allows you to evenly apply force to the hub without deforming it. Use a 3lb (or heavier) hand sledge to repeatably strike the socket and eventually you will separate the hub from the bearing. You will then likely need to cut and break one of the inner bearing races off of the hub. I hate to reference one of his videos, but Chris Fix's "How to Change a Wheel Bearing (short and fast version)" shows a similar method for a FWD car. As for pressing the hub into the new bearing assembly, simply use one of the all-thread rod style front wheel bearing kits. This video is entertaining, but sadly, not too helpful.

I know this is a rather old video/4 years old but, I FEEL YOUR PAIN!!! I spent many hours aligning a car via the string method & then, after the alignment was Close (within a 1/16th) I decided to rush & change a simple front wheel bearing on a 03 focus. It has spent it's life on the east coast and this particular wheel bearing was original to the car. It actually came apart intact, surprisingly! I spent hours laying on wet concrete, in upper 20 degree weather but, then it warmed up into the lower 30's & started raining for the last 4-5 hours! I do not have a press, or a slide hammer, I resided to using a bushing driver tool & beating it half to death with no avail & finally, I removed the knuckle & brought it indoors, into the vice & within 20 min, I was victorious!!! Then, back out into the rain & freezing weather to use a fwd bearing removal toll/ forcing screw type kit, to remove the bearing & install the new bearing & hub!!! I was in a hurry, Had to get the misses to work & when it was all done, I realized that I made a huge mistake! I forgot to grease the axle shaft before inserting it threw the hub, I cleaned all the old grease off & sprayed it w/brake clean, followed by using a small wire brush to get into the grooves & followed that up with brake clean again & a rag & in all my rush, I forgot to grease the axle so,, It must all come apart again tomorrow when it will be 11-18 degree's,=fun, fun!!! Wonder what joys I would encure if I don't grease the axle spline & leave it alone? RUST!!!

I did this job like 6 or so times on my Tacoma, one time I thought I bought a whole unit bearing but they sent me 2 parts, I modified my harbor freight pipe bender into a press and pressed out the outer and pressed back in the new parts.

Hey Eric, for future reference incase you have to do the other side, you can get the full hub/bearing assembly from Blue Pit Bearings. I did this job on my 2006 4Runner in 20 minutes with the full assembly.

Anytime your dealing with anything pressed in, just take it to your local auto machine shop pay them 20$ and have them press it out within seconds. But if you like dealing with those things yourself best of luck. In my experience its never worth the hassle.

I think Eric strategically went about this the most crude and difficult way (meaning without specialty tools) so that he could get some manufacturer's to send him a "review" press and wheel bearing extractor tool to use in the future. In his position, it would be foolish to go out and buy these things for himself. ;)

EricTheCarGuy You need a hydraulic press. Even a shitty HF one would of had saved you all that hammering. There's no substitute for hydraulic force.

Congratulations, Toyota, for making a wheel/hub bearing that is nearly impossible to replace without buying a spindle, too. I ended up removing 2 wheel studs, and using the grinder, cut a slot in the hub assembly in order to be able to slide 2 of the bolts out. I threaded nuts onto those bolts and along with a washer, re-inserted it into the slot that I cut out. I repeated this procedure on the bolt hole on the opposite side. Using the nut/bolts, I backed them off of each other, which effectively pushed the SPINDLE (the round thing is called a spindle, not a hub, or at least that's how I learned it) out of the hub/bearing unit and I was able to re-use the spindle, which was otherwise in good shape. Of course, I had to do some finnagling to remove the inner race of the inner bearing from the spindle, as typical wheel bearing replacement procedure. Pressing the spindle back into the hub/bearing was easy with the press. If you forget to install the bolts, I'm sure that studs can be installed into the knuckle and nuts used to hold the bearing in. Plus, installation may be a bit easier that way, as well. I've only come across a COUPLE small cars, such as the PT Cruiser, Neon, and Geo metro where I could use a hammer to successfully pound out the spindle from the bearing. It has just never worked, despite massive amounts of hammering.

Eric I watched your video but I hate to say but I noticed you left out the front outer oil seal during the assembly of the wheel bearing. The seal does not come with the wheel bearing assembly, it has to be purchased separately or use the old one which was not possible because you were not able to remove the bearings from the hub/spindle to be able to reuse the old seal. Either way I think Brian the cameraman deserves to know that he is missing the seal on his bearings. Just trying to help Brian out.

cmnemesis and the oring that keeps all the dirt out... Definitely not the way to do this job. I got over a 100,000 miles out of the bearings on my FJ, only replaced them cause I didn't want them to fail later...but I don't think that this hub assy will get near that with all that hammering...this is a typical Toyota hub not sure why Eric had no idea what he was doing. Also another good practice is to replace both sides so much easier to do both at the same time....

I also noticed he missed the O-ring and outer oil seal. My guess is that wheel bearing was replaced shortly after this video was made.

If there ever was as example of why you need a hydraulic press this would be it. When you start wailing on something with a hammer you're doing something wrong. If you haven't got the right tool for the job either get it or have somebody else do it. This was ridiculous.

dainternetguru Well I guess you didn't see that you'd have to remove the entire shield under the engine to do that. My experience with Toyota trucks is that the fasteners for these shields get pretty messed up by quick lube places. Brian's truck was no exception. In short, that would not be as easy as you might think.

Did my 86 Taurus several years ago, friend had a 10 ton press that was just able to separate the hub and bearing, also used it to put the new bearing in, made the job so much easier.

Mike Ferrante The front wheel bearing preload is set by pressing the hub into the bearing. The axle-nut doesn't actually hold the bearing together on the front of these, as the hub spline goes all the way through and the Driveshaft bottoms out against the spline, not the bearing. Torque setting on the axle nut is around 200Nm, so very tight is fine

+cherubman3052, actually that is incorrect. while the initial pressing puts everything together, the CV shaft and CV axle nut are what holds everything together as you drive. I have had NUMEROUS customers who have not torqued their CV nut properly and the hub started to work it's way out. This is why the torque spec on the nut is 173 lbs-ft. "Very tight" is not fine at all. I promise you, I have seen the results.

You should always have the needed tools before you start the job. If you don't have them do not start. If you are replacing pressed bearings the minimum needed is a hydraulic press or a pressed bearing remover kit. Eric I enjoy watching your videos and have picked up some good pointers from various videos, but on this video you really beat the hell out of the suv. I question if you damaged the tie rod or ball joint. I understand you try to present in your videos from a DIY prospective with minimum tools, but sometimes you just need to spend the money on the tool needed for the job, find someone who you can borrow it from, or bite the bullet and pay a professional. I do all the work on my vehicles, but I am happy to pay someone to for front end alignments or wheel balancing, because the tools needed are to expensive for me to buy.

Great video Eric, thanks for the help. I just replaced the wheel bearing (only) on my 05 4Runner. I got "Moog'd" as well when I ordered what I thought was the full hub / bearing assembly that turned out to be... the bearing. I ended up using an angle grinder to free the bolts from the old hub, then just like you, found a way to mash the new bearing into the new hub. In the end it all worked out, but took a bit of muscle!

+Radu Gostian That is what my mechanic suggested. Cool the new hub and heat the bearing cavity/housing. also, he advised heating the old bearing outer ring in one spot to loosen it before removal.

I guess you need a press for your shop, Eric. We replace a lot of wheel bearings in our shop and find they are all junk and about 50% of them fail within a year but since I started torqueing axles to spec my warranty comebacks are less than half of the other techs in the shop. The other guys have concrete heads and think I'm just an old fart.

Pietro Enciu That's a good point. I put grease on my hub last time I had it off. When I went to change it 4 years later, I took the bolts out and it just came right out.

ouch. glad thats not my vehicle. there is an inner seal on the spindle that needs to be replaced. original bearings lasted over 200,000 miles wow. without changing the inner seal the new bearing will not last 30,000. also why bend a skidplate? its only 4 bolts and you have power tools sheesh

Eric, the reason I'm searching youtube videos is to get ideas. Nice video by the way. I own an auto repair shop in Houston. I just had to do a 2003 Prerunner front wheel bearing. Earlier this week I did the front bearings on a 2005 Tundra which looks like what you are doing here. The job you are doing I used a very large bearing separator and used my press. The way the hub is made my "OTC hub shark" will not work on the 2003 Prerunner. We ended up getting the bearing out in the press using makeshift parallels which was kind of dangerous. I think you will agree this job is very time consuming and difficult. I found the 2003 much more difficult. All Data gives us commission techs 1.9 hours to do this job on the 2003 Prerunner. It gives 2.5 hours to do the job on the, IMO, easier 4 runner. I feel sorry for a young tech starting out. The times All Data and the other estimating software give these days makes it quite difficult to make a decent living as a technician. I would always advise any young person I meet not to pursue this line of work. A plumber or electrician for example can make much better money and the work is 100 times easier. Some of us are not cut out for college and thats OK. Do anything else. A technician's life is a very hard life and most will always live in poverty.

Hammering with it on the truck made me cringe. All that horizontal hammering force being transfered to the ball joints, tie rods and even the strut bearing, that can reduce the lifespan of those parts. I can see doing that if your stuck on the road or trail, but never in a shop setting. Also, I ALWAYS use a new hub. The score marks make for less grip in the bearing. There was no snap ring in that design, so I would have definitely tossed the old hub and bearing in the recycle bin together. If you don't have a press to use, you can take those bits to a machine shop and get it done right for about $30ish bucks in most places. As a mechanic, I adore Toyotas. Changing a heater core in my Camry is a 20 minute job as just one of many examples.

that slide hammer wasnt good because where it came from? maybe if you used the proper tool for the job that wouldnt have happened, that tool wasnt even meant for that hub, you stressed that tool using it like that, it breaks and its harbor freights fault , dont blame the tool blame yourself! good try though

Was thinking the same thing. Cast iron doesn't like to be bent, torquing the nuts down visibly bent the hub adapter. I was waiting for it to snap. Then blaming the tool for the failure. Nope in this case it wasn't the tools fault. And hammering on a NEW bearing !!! Not in my shop, far to easy to damage a bearing, then you get to repair the repair... You also learned to NOT thank the automaker for making it "easy" before the job is done....

That slide hammer sucked stop defending harbor freight lol, I know they are nice for dyi but there is nothing wrong with using an impact against that tool when it is supposed to be designed to have a built in impacting mechanism I highly doubt that the only reason the tool gave was because of improper use I mean it was designed to be hit man lol

Not defending HF at all. That tool broke because of abuse. First it was not the correct tool for that hub. Then when he was torquing the nuts down you can see the iron start to bend. Cast iron doesn't bend, it cracks and breaks. Then he also uses the two shop rags to increase the impact force, that isn't what that tool was made for. It would be no different if Eric had been using a Snap-On 3/8" ratchet with a 3 foot pipe on the handle and it failed.

Kevin McDougall You should learn some physics and the difference between screw and impact stresses. Everything has limitations, improper use can and does break tools. from experience I can tell you that I loaned an OTC/SPX slide hammer very similar to the one in the video to a coworker and he broke it just like Eric did. I replaced it with a SnapOn unit and he broke it within 20 minutes using it improperly just like Eric did. SnapOn rep reluctantly replaced it under warranty after some grumbling and a lecture. Needless to say, that coworker no longer has tool borrowing privileges.

He said twice that that's what he ordered, but Moog sent him a bearing assembly without a hub. BTW, Moog parts has less than a shadow of itself, their parts are sub-quality and poor reliability lately.,

Gotta say, I am a decent body man and an even better painter. Been doing it since about 12 for my Pop. Never got into being a mechanic, although he was/ is still a great mechanic. Your video is a step by step on what ever you're working on and you show the fails like the wheel hub assembly. I had ordered mine cause my Pop told me it's a pain to get apart sometimes, glad I saw it. Anyway thanks for breaking it down for us panel beaters and paint chip eaters.

I feel your pain EricTheCarGuy. I recently had a similar experience with an Acura MDX. It took two slide hammer rentals (ultimately a very large crow bar did the trick of getting the bearing out from the knuckle)and about 6 hours of work to just get the old hub assembly OUT!! Thankfully I already had a FULL Timken HUB and bearing assembly on hand. That was the toughest one I've encountered up til now.

@@Venom5260No im not. I have once taken a course at schaffler group on how to mount different bearings. One of the first thing they said is "never press or hammer the bearing when the forces goes through the roling elements" you get a dent in the race and it might be even worse then the one you replaced. I am glad to discouss with you, but not when you throw shit like that. If you shut your mouth sometimes and open your ears in the future, you might learn a thing or two.

Eric isn't obligated to do these videos. He's showing us how to do things the way we might be able to do them. Does the average person have a press at home? No, they don't. BUT, they might have a slide hammer or can rent one. Showing this done using a press would have been useless. People who own presses already know how to do these things, correct? People like you are why this country is in the shape it is in. How about offering some useful info, instead of hateful rhetoric. It helps nobody and you look like an idiot. I know offering useful knowledge isn't easy and it is much easier to bash somebody, but I bet if you start studying now, by this time next year, you might actually be able to help somebody.

Love the video. Reminded me of when I did my buddy's hub's and bearings in class he ordered his parts from rock auto and almost at the finish line and boom.....new drivers side hub was warped -_- looking at it dead on it was oval shaped. Now I put them on the shafts before anything else lol.

This is why I fix my own cars, these kind of hammerheads just trying to bruteforce and end up breaking everything. Dont you have a repair manual? It would clearly state how to do it. Your not a mechanic if you dont have one of the online repair manuals that have almost every car. You should have put the hub in a freezer for some time and heat the bearing assemly gently with a heat gun. Could slide right in, if not, check the manual. You have some good videos on easy jobs, but this requires something more than your hammer.....

Hey EricTheCarGuy, a trick I saw a colleague at wrk use to get hubs out is : you use the ball pein part of a hammer and hit on the flat surface with another. it's round so it can't really badly damage it and it gives you a bunch a strenght and confidence to hit it ! Just thought I'd share, might help someone

No need the part I refer to him doing it wrong is trying to pull the splined hub out of the bearing and housing. Those are an assembly for a reason! To save a few measly dollars instead of buying the hub assembly he is trying to hammer it out. This is a no-go. That was pressed in with a large hydronic ram at the assembly plant. Beating on it or applying a lot of heat can bend, crack the splined housing and misalign the center of the hub. If that part is ten beat back into a new bearing, the side loading on the bearing allows will cause damage and the bearing will destroy itself. Then you will be back doing the same thing again. Spent the extra 20.00 save yourself the headache, buy the whole assembly, replace four bolts and get on with your life, why would you even waste a whole day trying to beat it loose?

Christopher Benfield It may be surprising to learn that bearings with the hub installed aren't sold at many retailers for this truck. Also, many of the aftermarket hubs appear to be far inferior (thinner material) to OEM. As long as the original hub is in good shape, reuse it. Eric makes this look way harder than it is.

we just did the front wheel bearings on a 2000, and its got 350 000km on her from northern Ontario. We beat the snot out of it and we needed torches, a press, sledge hammer, air hammer... but we got her! Finally watched a mechanic work for his $$$.. LOL

Heck No! These trouble/problem vids are as educational if not more so to the DIY'er than everything went perfect vids. That's the greatest value of Eric's vids is that he is not ego centric so he doesn't have the need to present himself as being flawless and fake or in street slang, "He's keep'n it real".

vmeansvelocity Are you a Technician? Any dealership tech or independent tech has run into this. Hubs can sometimes be super easy or a super pain in the ass. All depends doesn't matter if you have all the right tools or factory parts. We have 8 techs at my shop and once it took all 8 of us taking turns on the slide hammer to get a hub off.

Damn Eric, you let that 4Runner kick your ass! To make your life a bit easier for next time, a large bearing splitter and a press is really the only way to get the hub separated from the bearing on 4Runners and Tacomas. I do those all the time at the dealer in about 30-40 minutes, and always reuse the old hub. 2 solid hours of flat rate gravy in your bay my friend!

The hub can be removed from the bearing assembly and put back in more easily with a 20 ton bench press. I ended up getting one myself after trying everything you did Eric and getting no where. Get a press. You'll find its worth its weight in gold.

I don't think I've ever seen Eric struggle so hard with that bad boy. Normally, you got the simple trick that gets it done. I swear, hardest part of the job is how much the vehicle fights you. Gotta be optimistic though, you're not on jack stands hah.

It bolts on. Install the entire assembly including the bearing is the way to go. 4 bolts. Had a top mechanic install just the bearing and the amount of banking needed to remove the old bearing is insane.

2 other ways that I've removed bolt in wheel bearings in the past that might have worked here are 1: a slide hammer with a 3 jaw puller. Worked great on the rear bearing I replaced on a 98 Plymouth breeze. 2: Put the wheel back on with washers for proper spacing to keep from bottoming out the lug nuts (the brake rotor can work too, but it can damage the rotor and/or backplate) and use leverage on the wheel, i.e. yanking on it side to side to pull the bearing loose. The puller worked best for me though as it actually took longer to put the tool together than it did to remove the bearing. I try to avoid using a chisel in places like that because you could damage the backing plate. I also don't have any good long sharp chisels that would work on a bearing that big. Lastly, I would LOVE to have a ball joint that easy to deal with! Good job Toyota!!!
