Video short showing how to replace a thermostat on a 8th generation Honda Civic equipped with the 1.8 liter 4 cylinder engine (R18A). This procedure will be very similar for later-generation hondas that use variations of the R18 motor. It is important to ensure the cooling system is completely filled after air is introduced into the cooling circuit. Having a faulty thermostat can result in an engine overheating or underheating such that the engine is not being run at optimal temperatures. This will eventually throw a P0126 check engine code. Lastly, a thermostat that is stuck open or opening prematurely can result in a vehicle with insufficient cabin heat. Cooling systems should be refilled with only genuine Honda coolant

Hey everybody, just thought I'd update this comment in case someone else experienced the engine light staying on after installing a new thermostat. When I originally posted the comment below, I had replaced my thermostat by following Pierce's excellent video. After replacing the thermostat, on my wife's 2010 Honda Civic, the engine light continued to display until we drove her car about 10 to 15 miles, today, and it finally turned off. So, if the engine light is staying on, just go for a test drive at least for 10 to 15 miles or longer until it turns off. Hello Pierce, thanks for your clear and concise thermostat replacement video. My "engine light" came on and I took it to a Honda dealership. They told me that my thermostat was staying open and needed to replace. Their cost was $750 ! I decided to replace it myself using your video as a guide. I replaced it easily enough and have added coolant to the system. I took it for a test drive but the "engine light" continues to stay on. What do you do when this happens? Can I reset this light myself or should I take it to another Honda dealership and see if they can decide what's wrong? Thanks, Gary

Ty for this video. I’m a 25 year old woman and was able to do this on my 2012 Civic with no issue thanks to you and several other repair videos I’ve watched. I’ve replaced my blower motor, engine air filter, and now my thermostat thanks to helpful people like you giving us these gems. This was my first repair that I’ve done under the hood. I was intimidated at first but once I got going I found the confidence to continue. Thank you for saving me money and keeping me educated on my car. I love my civic! These cars are so reliable and relatively inexpensive and easy to repair when issues crop up. I’m a Honda owner for life. Only ever driven Honda’s and they’ve never failed me. 💁🏽‍♀️💙

I know you said you have a 2012 civic. It wouldn't hurt you to go ahead and check all of your grounds. Grounds being you ground wire from transmission to chassis right there by the batter well below the battery and then theres one on the left side of the engine connecting towards the left engine might running to the back engine bay frame. Reason why I say to go ahead and clean and wrap these is bc Honda left them exposed from factory and mine shorted out thus causing so car start issues and it fried my battery. So be aware of that it only takes about half an hour

After I reworked all the ground wires replaced my battery and I went ahead and replaced my starter bc it also ended up being my starter to but I have an 09 ex coupe

Thanks for the nice video. It allowed me to get the job done quick and it was a reference I used once during the job specifically for how you slid off the black plugs on the bracket we had to remove. I had an issue about the Thermostat OEM temperature. Autozone and Rockauto state the OEM is 180. FYI there is 170 and 195 also available. As soon as I completed the job and ran the car the Check Engine light with the PO128 code was off. Also, I bought the thermostat from Autozone, fun fact, I have a commercial account there since I have an LLC, it's free to create and there's no minimum purchase obligation. By using my commercial account I got the the thermostat for half off. The thermostat only cost like 6 bucks which was awesome! The whole job cost me 12 bucks cause I had coolant already to use.

@jaybaker76
@jaybaker76 5 месяцев назад
I believe an auto parts store that can scan your codes can do it for you (using the OBD2 plug?). Or...just do what I've done several times. Pull one of the battery cables off, and leave it sit for a few minutes to reset the computer....then reconnect. Be warned that you might need the code to unlock your radio afterwards.

Viewing this video to replace the thermostat in my wife's Honda. Question about the placement of the drain pan: About how far in from the front of the car should i place the pan? Will be evident that I've positioned the pan correctly prior to the coolant draining or should i expect some trial and error?
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 8 месяцев назад
It will be a bit of trial and error as coolant will more or less go all over the place. Just get a wide pan to catch most of it.

Hi understand the process for this i have the same civic but here is the thing at 10:40 I hear the rad fan turning on but my fans do not turn on. If i turn my A/C on both fans turns on but not when i just have the heater on. Any ideas? thanks
@piercedasian
@piercedasian Год назад
Yep, it can take a long long time of idling to get the temps up to the point where the rad fan turns on. What I do is turn the heater OFF and then run the car at around 3000 RPM for about 10-20 minutes and that is when the motor runs hot enough to heat the coolant enough to trip the fan switch. Just don't turn on heat or a/c and do that. Once the rad fans come one a couple of times then top off coolant and you should be good to go.

What do I do if I did tighten those bolts to tight and it cracks the block?
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 10 месяцев назад
you likely won't crack the block but rather you'd strip the threads or snap the bolt. They are tiny 10mm heads holding the housing on and they just need to be snugged down. Something light like 8ft-lbs or so is enough.

Bro once I replaced the thermostat the housing broke AND the bolt hole got stripped due to corrosion. On top of that the hose was leaking too. I replaced it all and did a helicopter in the bolt hole. The hosing sits 99.9% flush but the .01% means to this day it’s dripping coolant. When this whole ordeal started my car pissed all the coolant in a Home Depot parking lot 100 miles from home. I really regret ever doing this preventative maintenance 🤦‍♂️ nothing was leaking a month ago. You’re not alone my friend

Update 6 days later. It was the gasket… it hardened and warped so it wasn’t sitting right. Got a new one, fit like a glove, no more pissing. Whole experience totally worth it. Learned a lot from my mistakes. Also… coolant DOES NOT taste as good as it smells.

@kmlumd44
@kmlumd44 7 месяцев назад
how do you know it's the thermostat? The best way to test a thermostat if you're that concerned is to boil water and use a cooking thermometer to test the temp of the water and drop the stat in the water and watch if it opens. Then the stat is fine.
@valaki-ph1hd
@valaki-ph1hd Год назад
good job I' do not see thermostat test good or a bad why changed it???????/
@piercedasian
@piercedasian Год назад
I didn't bother testing the tstat b/c I've worked on enough cars in my lifetime to know with good confidence that if a car isn't low on coolant and takes forever for the engine to heat up that the t-stat is likely stuck open. In this car's case it was winter and the heat barely worked yet the coolant was full so we changed out the t-stat and problem solved. Testing a tstat is super easy but time is money in the garage so I didn't bother spending more time on something I knew was faulty.
@ericnieto2092
@ericnieto2092 10 месяцев назад
@@piercedasianonly way to test a thermostat is to remove it then see what temp it opens? At that point it makes sense to replace.

Can you pour the coolant that drained out back in?
@jec0435
@jec0435 9 месяцев назад
It's not a good idea no.
@kmlumd44
@kmlumd44 7 месяцев назад
If you can drain the coolant into a clean container and the drained coolant isn't being contaminated with dirt from running down the vehicle into the container, and you feel that the coolant is pretty much new enough and clean enough then reusing it should be just fine. In my case the coolant was pretty much new that was coming out, but the car is dusty/dirty/etc, and the drainpan has oil residue and other residues from prior jobs. So I definitely didn't reuse it. Don't risk going cheap and reusing it and contaminating your system if the coolant is old or it has gotten contaminated.

will the check engine light go off shortly after following these steps?
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 10 месяцев назад
It will depend if the fix was the root cause of the CEL to come on in the first place. I just use the scan tool to reset the ECU once the fix is done and in 99% of the cases I've worked on that the light doesn't come back on.

In most cases, successfully repairing the issue that caused your light to come on will cause the check engine light to turn off automatically-but only after 10 to 20 “cycles”. A cycle, in this instance, refers to the process of turning the vehicle on, running it for some time, and turning it off again

How long can you drive with the coolant thermostat broken??
@piercedasian
@piercedasian Месяц назад
it depends if you have a t-stat that is stuck open or closed. I suspect that if you're still driving the car that its likely stuck open. You COULD in theory drive like that with not much issues if you live in a relatively warm climate but in my honest opinion you're better off fixing it sooner than later for 2 reasons: 1. Emissions. The car will never properly go into closed loop mode so you'll burn more fuel over time b/c the engine will tend to run richer. 2. Lack of proper heat when you need it to heat the car or to defog the windows during moist rainy days. This can be a HUGE safety hazard so this is why I would get this fixed at your earliest opportunity.

if you don't drain the coolant out and just yank the t-stat and make a mess then about 1.5 liters of coolant is more than enough.
