About to do a 2005. PO353 code primary/secondary coil C is center coil on coil pack.No spark whatsoever on 2 and 6 (center coil).Pretty amazing how well it runs on 4 cylinders. It only misses a little at idle. With key off, battery disconnected, there is a diode short to ground on center wire of 3 driver wires of coil connector.1.5v I can't get a high ohm reading to ground on any of the 3, only with diode test mode on meter.Other 2 pcm driver wires to coil pack are open.I haven't done a signal pulse test but am assuming the pcm is shorted and no pulse to center coil C.Looks like the easiest access is to remove the intake plenum.Ordered pcm with keys and fingers crossed. If no spark on 2 wires same coil, diode test on coil connector driver wires might be easy test.Stay off the red wire if key is on and battery connected or +12v will blow your meter up. Thanks for info.
I know this is years later but how did you replace it? Like did you get a preprogrammed one or did you just get one meant for the car and have it programmed?
I had a mechanic replace the alternator on my 2006 Ford five hundred, it wouldn't start. So, afterwards it started but my alternator light stayed on and the message to check charging system. But the car started fine. So I took it to another mechanic and he said the alternator is bad. So, I had him put the 2nd alternator on. He told me he had to order three seperate alternators before he got a good one after testing them. The third alternator worked. No charge for the two bad one's, he just sent them back. After the 3'rd alternator was installed, it was fixed! No light, no warning message! Yeee-haaa! So, always double check, or test, your alternator. This seems to be an issue on 2006 Ford five hundreds. So i wonder, with the pcm, would it help to spray with some type electrical spray to help it repeal water? Thanks, John
The coil pack on these have only 3 coils in the pack and fire 2 cylinders at the same time. The coil connector has 4 wires.Red is +12v to all 3 coils and the 3 yellow wires pulse the 3 individual coils.Again, 2 cylinders fire at same time on these. If only 1 cylinder spark missing, might be plug or wire. I'm still learning too.
Yes, I debated on what to do because of not being able to access the PCM so easily. In the end, the fuel trims stuck at zero pretty much convinced me that the PCM was bad. Luckily it worked out :)
👍Good job Sir- 👍 Would you please tell us which site on eBay you got PCM from and cost please? I have an 02 Taurus that I’m chasing my tail and have just totally thrown all kinds of new parts in it w/ NOT truly fixing problem yet, pulling hair out. Thank you✌️
Thank you for the video. This is the first thing (picture or video) I've come across that indisputably shows where the PCM is on these old Taurus'. Now I've got an old 2000 model to look into. You ever figure out the airbag light problem too? I ask because my 2000 model has had one on for the 5 years I've owned it.
Farmboy's Garage I completely understand that! I've put as much into my Taurus as what I paid for it 5 years ago, actually a bit more. It's still cheaper than buying a new car though and having payments.
It's all about the electronics, since 2000. Cars aren't like 55 Chevys anymore. You gotta buy top notch electrical meters and know how to use them. Throwing parts at 'em doesn't work anymore.
Nothing wrong with swapping parts on todays cars because unless you have the skills to rebuild a PCM that is really all you can do. Its good that you could get the PCM with keys that made it easier.
Thanks, I bought it off eBay. All I had to do was give them the VIN and they preprogrammed everything. Just had to get the keys cut, so it worked out well.
rhino11us Your Taurus is NOT a POS. You're just not enough of a mechanic to figure out what's wrong with it. Now that we've figured that out, introduce me to your girlfriend.
You know I didn't even check. I'll probably see it this weekend and take a reading. Funny thing was, when I unplugged the alternator, the amps would drop to about 5.
It's possible, but with the PCM unplugged and key on, it only drew about 2 amps, so I'm hoping it was a short in the PCM. The alternator is only 6 months old so it's still under warranty if that's still an issue.
I got a question guys: Is that true that Tauru's transmissions are so junky/not reliable/bad? Some people reported problems with this. Some not. So not completely sure. My Dad used to have an 89 Taurus. No Issues at all.
I can say with first hand knowledge that the transmission in this car is junk. Had to have it rebuilt at 120K miles. The guy that rebuilt it said he worked on a lot of these and they were all junk. Having said that, I have also had to have a 2004 Expedition transmission rebuilt at 128K miles, so maybe it's just Ford transmissions?
