2007-2011 Honda CR-V A/C Compressor Clutch & Coil - Repair
Hey Everyone!
In this video I will replace my A/C Compressor Clutch & Coil on my 2008 Honda CR-V. It is the same procedure all the way through the 2011 models. If you choose to take on this repair at home, the good news is that it can be done without even jacking up the car. This is a common problem on these models and Honda even had a warranty extension at one point. Unfortunately its time limit is over for the warranty and all repairs are now at full price which can be costly. I performed this entire repair for $50 at my house including the R134a refrigerant. I purchased an aftermarket Clutch and coil kit on Amazon for $35. I purchased the refrigerant at harbor freight with a coupon for $15. Keep in mind that it is very illegal to let the refrigerant vent to the open air. You will have to have someone recover the system before doing this procedure.
I want to go over some of the special tools that will make the job go alot easier for you.
On this car, the drivebelt tensioner is in a tight spot to get to. It sits next to the mount bracket and you only have maybe an inch of room. A ratchet and socket will not fit. If you have a drivebelt removal tool with a 14mm it will be alot easier to take the tension off to remove the belt. I used the boxed end of a 14mm wrench and doubled a wrench on the open end as leverage.
You will need snap ring pliers to be able to remove the pulley and coil. The normal snap ring pliers found at the local part stores might not be a good choice. For one, there is a good chance that corrosion has built up on the snap rings and almost freezes it in the groove. you will need pliers with a strong tip so it won't snap the tip from the force of squeezing it. Also the snap ring holding the coil is very deep down, you will need to find a pair of snap ring pliers that have a long tip to it.
The Compressor Pulley is pressed into the shaft. You will need a pulley puller to be able to pull the pulley off. To get the new pulley on I used a small rubber hammer and tapped in circles until it seated.
You will need a Feeler Guage set to make sure the Gap is correct between the Pulley and the Clutch Plate.
If you are charging the system yourself, you will need to pull a vacuum on the system to eliminate moisture before charging. I used an inexpensive venturi vacuum that runs off of my shop compressor. Harbor Freight sells them for about $15. I do not have an A/C recovery hose so I screwed off the line from my refrigerant bottle and screwed it onto my vaccum.
If you don't feel comfortable charging the system with a can, you could always take the car to have freon professionally charged after installing the compressor. If you do charge it yourself, follow all warnings and directions of the can that you use.
