Dr Shock, I replaced all of my TPMS sensors on my 2008 Cobalt and did the relearn procedure successfully using a TPMS learning tool. I got a horn sound after each tire and a double horn sound at the last tire LR, however the TPMS light is still on and the VIC says to Service TPMS. I've heard about the RCDLR module in the dash. Have you had any experience with that? Also my key fob does work. Thanks.
With this situation, I would start with pulling any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) to help guide the next steps in the repair. If the DIC is is showing a service message, there should be a code present if the TPMS sensors are not the fault.
I change one sensor in my Malibu 09 when I deflate the tire in order the car learn the sensor but never happen. Get in the car and put the car in off, after that none of the sensors read appear in my dash. Try again put the car in learn mode, this time three tires horn but rare thing is when I finish the third tire I heard two horn alerting me that it has been finished but still one tire to deflate. Get into car and all in dash reads only -- -- -- -- no numbers. Do I need other tool to fix it?
So a couple of points. When you go to learn the first wheel, you only have 120 seconds to complete the procedure or the car exits learn mode. After the first wheel, you again only have 2 minutes for _each_ wheel to complete the relearn or again the car exits learn mode on any one of them. It really should only take 30 seconds for any given wheel for the sensor to communicate with the cars body control module as you deflate the tire manually. If it's taking longer, then that's a sign the battery in the sensor could be growing weak, presuming you are steadily deflating the tire to trigger the sensor into re-relearn state. These times are stated in your Malibu owners manual under TPMS sensor matching process. If I had this problem, and was working within the times mentioned, then I'd rotate the 4th wheel that won't relearn onto a different position and repeat. If it again fails, the sensor is defective in that wheel.
Without the TPMS working you have to go back to doing what everyone did before that tech came out (manually check tire pressures). The whole reason TPMS laws came out were those rollover accidents with Ford Explorers with Firestone tires back in the late 90s that ended up due to low tire pressure.
The tools and procedure I would say are universal to all GM cars and trucks/SUVs. But the sensors are not, there are different ones for different models/years. The GM part number sensor I show in this vid fits a broad swath of GM vehicles listed in the video description. That list includes the Malibu.
I just too my car to discount tire same model I asked them to fix both sensors and they replaced the two but the light is still on. They said because I didn’t have the key fob so what should I do?

My TPMS hasn’t worked in years, hasn’t bothered, but just recently I started getting a “SVC TIRE MONITOR” message and the tire light is lit up now. Why would it do that after all this time? How can I disable it without replacing them? Does the key fob have anything to do with this? My key fob hasn’t worked in year either, that is something I am also currently troubleshooting. 2008 Pontiac G6 GT
The message is usually because the body control module can no longer communicate with the valve stem sensors in the wheels. You can often ignore the TPMS relearn that is supposed to be done whenever you rotate the tires to keep the sensor values associated with the right wheel position on the instrument cluster graphic, but once communication stops the error you see usually appears. Nothing to do with the key fob itself. I'm not aware of anyway to disable TPMS, as it is a vehicle feature required by Federal law for over a decade now.
@@DrShock so even though my tire pressure indicated “- -“ for years there may be another communication issue? Doesn’t the relearn process require a key fob? Might just take it to a dealer and bite the bullet, I’m fine when things don’t work but when lights turn on I have a problem lol.
Relearn process uses a key fob to initiate it on vehicles with power locks yes. Vehicles without obviously don't have that and the relearn on those is initiated thru the instrument clusters DIC menu selection only. Yeah I have seen folks ignore the TPMS light on the dash, and the -- on the DIC view but eventually it will error out. I'm not sure what triggers it, perhaps when at least two sensors are not communicating to the body control module. It's easy enough to check, just put the vehicle into TPMS relearn mode with your key fob following the instructions in your owners manual. I suspect you will reach one wheel that will refuse to relearn, and that's at least one of the sensors you will have to have replaced.
Should be exactly how I show in the video, unless you don't have this same model year range. Each GM car has a Driver Information Center (DIC) and a menu button to get into the tire pressure section to do this relearn. If you don't have the DIC interface I show in the video, your GM vehicle owners manual will have the steps listed.
Hi, how much does it cost if it’s the back right side tire? It says it can range from $15-25 but my mechanic is saying it can cost $100. $100 is for all 4 right? Hopefully I explained myself lol I don’t know much about this.
The sensor part number is the same for all four tires, so there is zero difference in cost there. And the procedure I showed is exactly the same for all four tires, so no difference for back or front on what's required to be done. If you don't do it yourself, what gets you is the labor cost. That can vary alot but most shops post their hourly rate, and you can see from this video it's pretty quick to do this job with the right tools. It's going to depend on how many sensors have to be replaced.
First you have to be sure they are the correct TPMS sensors for your vehicle, the sensors are radio frequency based to a channel that varies by vehicle manufacturer, they are not all interchangeable. Second you have to be sure you have fresh stock, these sensors have a built in battery that cannot be recharged. If you have both of those bases covered, then you need to get them installed into the wheels. If you have a GM vehicle, then this video here should cover that part. Once installed, you need to put the vehicle into TPMS relearn mode, same as when you rotate the tires. During that process the unique serial number of each sensor will be learned by the body control module inside the vehicle. Your owners manual should explain how to enter the relearn mode. If you have a Chevrolet it should be as I show in the video for that part too. All GM vehicles will _walk you thru_ the relearn by beeping the horn and flashing the turn signals.
Do I have to have that special tool (the orange one you used) to reprogram the tire monitor(after new replacement ) or can I just use the relearn mode (and let air out in the correct order until the horn beeps) I don't want to spend money on a new tool I will use maybe twice and in the area I live in the CHEAPEST replacement is $75 a piece maybe even more now, as that price.was given to me a few years ago.
Older GM vehicles (like the Cobalt) supported the manual tire pressure approach, newer ones only work with a TPMS tool. You would have to check your owners manual to be sure.

Sure, each of the TPMS sensors has a unique ID. They register themselves with the body control module (BCM) over radio frequency (RF) during the learn process. The BCM keeps track of which tire position is associated with which sensor ID, so that the driver information center can show what the tire pressures are accurately. When you rotate the tires, this is why you have to do the relearn process. When you replace the sensor as we did in this video, the BCM doesn't care. It's just going to record the sensor ID at that particular tire position.
The same company makes all the tpms sensors, no matter which one you buy itll be identical to the GM original part. I buy Schrader sensors, half the price yet they supply Ford, GM and many others. Just a different label.
That's actually a common misunderstanding of the OEM supply chain involved here. Schrader is a large OEM supplier of TPMS technology, but they are not the only OEM supplier. Denso, TRW, and Continental manufacture using their own design of sensor technology, for example. GM OEM sensors are different than aftermarket in that they do not have assignable UIDs.
