If you get a rattle that last a few seconds in the morning this might be the fix. 2008-2016 Honda CRV, Accord.
Compression spring size:
7/32 x .025 x 1-3/8 long
To remove the 5 point special torx box I used a small vice grip to break them loose then unscrewed them by hand. I also replaced them to 10mm bolts for better and fast access. I’ll be making a video showing the process.
This is a rough guide. Use it to give you an idea of the steps of the procedure. And make sure not to drop anything into the engine! Many holes and crevices where the spring can bounce into. So proceed with caution and take your time.

I have this issue, and already saw a ton of videos about this. Yours is the most simple an straightforward fix. I'll try and source the sprint in europe (where I'm living). Thanks for the videos, I was scared to do the fix myself but this made me see it was not that complicated, also I'm due to change the valve gasket plus tune the valves, this way I can do all of that in an afternoon. Really appreciate it.

Hello, so this is the correct repair for having start up rattle. However, while the recommended spring might work for some vehicles, I am guessing there are a couple of different designs and spring lengths, it did not work for mine. It stopped the rattle but keeps the timing locked. Luckily I kept my old spring.... Reuse your old spring! Just stretch it out, I ended up redoing this with that method and now everything works as it should with no start up rattle!

Just did this on my 08 accord 2.4L. I would recommend getting the car to top dead center the normal way instead of how you did it. I attempted to turn the sprocket with a 17mm and breaker bar but it would not budge. Instead I cranked the car over in increments of .5!seconds until I was at top dead center. I shortened the spring by 3 coils like others and the noise was still there as soon as I started the car up. I’m at a loss

So... got the valve cover off and... promptly stripped the head of the first 5 point star bolt I tried... 🤦‍♂️ Gotta love how the manufacturer makes things as difficult as possible for the DIY'er. Did not try to do any more because, 9 times out of 10, it just goes downhill from there. So, our CR-V now has a new valve cover gasket and spark plug seals and... the same rattle on start up. Gonna just let it be as it's been doing it for 6 years now and is still running just fine otherwise.

@@Daniel-xq7ny Not many but stretching the spring does not increase its uncompressed force significantly so there's little to no risk. It may not even fix your issues because the spring returns to its original shape with heat. The biggest risk is dropping something into the engine while the valve cover is off. TBH you could either live with the rattle, try this fix, or replace the VTC altogether. Depending on your mileage and service history, you may have luck using an engine flush additive and fresh oil change. The VTC has tight tolerances so any gunk/debris can reduce oil flow and/or ability return to the locked position. YMMV

lmao… what nonsense. There’s a reason why you see two different CRV’s in the beginning, because the second one (blue one) started when already warmed up (no noise when warm). The one being worked on (gray one) doesn’t start up immediately after it was done because it would still make the noise lol. It doesn’t work, noise comes right back.

Update: replace the security bolts with regular hex head bolts. If you use the ones marked 10.9 on the head, torque them down to 10 ft. lbs / 120 in. lbs and use blue threadlocker - the kind made to work on oily parts. If you use another grade of bolt, marked 8.8 for example, the torque spec will be less. You need to look up the maximum torque value for the hardware you select. The important thing is that the bolts ARE torqued to near maximum spec. These are NOT bolts you want coming undone while the engine is running!!!

Thanks for posting this video…I found it very helpful. I followed it step by step, but ran into a few problems. My bolts that held the actuator plate on had a rounded head, so I had to purchase the special TS27 5 point torx socket to remove them. While removing those 5 bolts, of course I stripped one. This lead me to buy M6 x 30mm bolts to replace them. I found the spring to be considerably longer than the OEM one, so I took 2 loops off like someone else mentioned in the comments. I had to turn the actuator much farther than what you rotated in the video…that part made me nervous. Just did this today on my 2012 CRV. Easy enough to do if you have the right tools (1.5hrs). It did not completely stop the rattle, but significantly reduced how loud it was. I just bought a variety pack of compression springs and found one that fit and was longer/stiffer. Maybe with a new oil change and some liqui-moly mos2 will stop it altogether. No check engine lights, still able to engage VTEC. I think if I buy the spring you suggested the noise may stop completely. Timing Chain looked fine and tight as well. Note: For the CRV, you need a 5 point T30 bit, not a 6 point like in Civics. I did not rotate the engine, I just kept note of where the spring was. Thank you!

@caseyalexander2244
@caseyalexander2244 Год назад
If the spring doesn't stop the rattle follow this order of operations: 1. Replace your timing chain tensioner - very easy and can save your engine. K-series need these basically every 100-150K miles. 2. Verify your timing chain is not stretched while you have the valve cover off to line up cylinder #1 top dead center. You'll be doing this when you replace the timing chain tensioner anyway. If the chain is stretched, when you have the white crank pulley mark lined up the arrow on the timing cover, the notches on the cam gears won't line up. If the chain is stretched, replace it along with the tensioner. 3. Open the VTC actuator back up and remove the locking pin. When you do this, your intake cam gear will move forward. Don't panic, later you can rotate the engine forward and line the detent for pin and bolts holes back up. Only rotate clockwise - ever. Test the locking pin, it should move in and out freely with no drag or hanging up. If it does not - work the pin over with emery cloth and/or fiber abrasive polishing attachments on a rotary tool. Get the pin nice and clean, and smooth until it goes in and out of the detent in the back cover smooth and easy. Add oil to the pin when doing this. 4. Last item to check / replace - the VTEC oil control valve. If it's open when you pull it out - replace it. It should be closed.
