2008 BMW E92 3 Series Coupe Seatbelt Extender Fix

If your seatbelt extender does extend but the arm collapses then you might want to try this fix before considering an expensive repair job at a garage. BMW quoted price was over £400 just for parts. I should add that I chose to use superglue for my fix. Please also see the Extender Arm removal video at this link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-K8sGHSrkjp4.html

Thanks for this fix. Used superglue, worked perfectly. I think this type of video is the web at its finest. Cheers.

Did you have to pull the fuse? And also remove the assembly or just super gluing the right location? Need help :(

Sorted mine today.Didnt take out the fuse I just extended it and turned ignition off and it stayed out.I then gave it a gentle tug and the whole arm came out.Immediately I saw small angled piece of metal jamming the mechanism.I pulled it out with tweezers and then pushed the whole arm back into the housing.Tried it and it works perfectly so far...Happy bunny! Took me 2 mins.

Thats the same problem I had, pulled it out like you and it worked perfectly! Thanks :)

Worked for me too, on both sides! Thanks for enlightening us with your knowledge! Haha The only thing I did different was not take out the fuse. I held the belt extender until the mechanism did not want to retract the extender anymore. Of course taking out the fuse is safer but wanted to let others know you don't have to take out the fuse to do this repair. All I did was take out the spring and broken metal and Voilà, both extenders work! Thanks Again!

Many thanks for posting this video....I followed your instructions today and fixed both passenger and drivers extenders just like you demonstrated....I drilled and screwed mine into place and they both now work as they should..... never took me that long and what a saving in money....again thanks for the insight.

Just wanted to say thanks. Same thing happened to me and I was able to fix it just like you mentioned. Just wanted to note for those wondering that metal piece that broke off actually slides back and forth. I looked for it like you mentioned in the video but mine was pushed back so I had to use the tip of my edc knife to slide it out so it was positioned correctly. Before doing that though I used Loctite super glue (ultragel) and placed a dab in the crevice that it slides over and let it set overnight. Works perfectly now with no issues. That starch and ironing method is a waste of time for those wondering because it's not the belt, it's this specific piece that needs to be taken care of. Thanks again man!!!

It will work without the glue or screw but the piece that remains can sometimes hinder normal working of the mechanism. You might be ok without it but just so you know. Still, glad I was able to help.

Aarrgghhh. Super glue didn’t work for me. Looks like a 1mm drill and a piece of fuse wire melted into the plastic. 👍

Have you tried it with only the spring removed? It should work. I advise adhering the metal piece to the frame to prevent possible obstruction in the future.

Nice video! I was able to remove the spring and metal piece, but mine does not have enough metal left in it to install a screw, so I will use it without one until it breaks again! Thanks

Thanks for your additional info. I discovered that since I have one of the first production models of the 2007 e92 body style that, my peice has a second fixed catch that I had to cut off with an exacto knife. In later production models the second catch is omitted. After I removed it I used super glue on the tab to hold it. It worked a few times but then stopped working. I am now looking for the smallest flat head screw known to man so that I can try to hold the tab in place with said screw. If that doesn't work then I may order the part which I can get for $70.00 US.

Hi, I would like to know when does the extender retracts back into its original position and when does it extends, is it once we start the ignition it automatically extends?
@romeosantos9406

thanks got my driver side to work. just yank the sucker out the spring will fly off didnt have to glue or use a bolt. listen take the fuse out or risk scratching something when the extender goes back in and you have anything dangling

Thanks so much for this. Managed to fix the driver's side. I removed both loose pieces and superglued the metal piece as you said but the passenger side still drops the belt (after managing to catch it initially). Any ideas on what to do? Many thanks!

Hey man, maybe u will have a clue what could be wrong. I did as u suggested in this vid, but the ending part of this extender does not move properly. Sometime that D shape thing (if im lucky) comes out, but it does not move properly. Any ideas? It looks that something inside the mechanism is stuck..

Just did this fix and ten top part still seems too weak because after it pushes the belt out, the belt slips halfway through the path. Any advice? Thanks

Just pull the extender out firmly towards the front of the car.

I just opened and closed the door,that extends the seatbelt mechanism, it won't retract for 5mins, NO need to take a fuse out,then simply pull the end pice forward and pop out that little peace off metal you showed, job done,2 minutes. that peace of metal gets jammed,

I just followed your video and did as you said only bit I didn't do is drill or glue the part you said . When my arm now goes to grab the belt it grabs but then folds in and goes past the belt. is this because it needs glueing or drill and screwing ?
@ilikebackrubs
@ilikebackrubs 8 лет назад
The remaining piece of metal can obstruct the mechanism and prevent it from extending and holding. That's why I recommend glue, screw or another method to stop the loose piece moving and getting in the way.
@KelsS1k
@KelsS1k 7 лет назад
if yours isnt working and you have not touched it Do this. get in the car and close the door When it extends Grab it and pull on it, Theres this little medal that should be loose inside it When you touch itll move, Take it off the extender it should automatically bring the head fully out
@bakerbrian41

So, I tried to pull mine out and there is a second catch that is fixed. So when I released the first catch is slid out about 4 inches or 6-7 cm. Did you have that too?
@ilikebackrubs
@ilikebackrubs 9 лет назад
So, when I started to pull the extender arm there was about 1cm of movement before reaching the fixed catch. I then applied some more force to pull the arm out from remainder of the extender, which, yes, travels about 4 inches once free. I wasn't able to record that part of the process at the time but I can try and do it now, then post a link to it here, if that helps?

Which fuse 30? There's more than one for me. I have the 2008 BMW 335XI btw
@ilikebackrubs
@ilikebackrubs 8 лет назад
It seems you're looking at the fuse rating rather than the layout. There should be a card in the removable panel that covers the fusebox. It has the details of the ratings and the numbering sequence on it.

@ilikebackrubs
@ilikebackrubs 8 лет назад
+Rashid Omar You can rule out the fuse if the other side works. It could be the pressure sensor in the seat, the extender motor or maybe the extender is jammed.

Why the hell someone needs a "belt extender" !? Some car extras are really stupid.
@ldrha
@ldrha 6 лет назад
If you're a smaller person (eg. like my GF :-) ) and have your seat close to the steering wheel, you won't be able to reach for the belt without the extender in the E92 :-)
@minshum
@minshum 6 лет назад
Maddrop The E92 has massive doors, which allow easier access for the rear passengers. However, this means the seat belt anchor point is way back, so it saves twisting your spine or doing your shoulder in. Plus it's cool when it works!
