Now that we have the EVAP fault fixed lets dig into the VVT issues we are having. The PCM is setting a p0014 and P0017. The are cam timing codes and Camshaft sensor performance codes. The performance code is only because the PCM doesn't understand the data its receiving from the CMP sensor at times. We need to diagnose the root cause of this code.
Looking at the data it seem like the VVT solenoid is sticking at times. Some of these tests can be performed with a basic scan tool and some require a lap scope to verify the actual signal.
After confirming that our signal is good from the PCM we can make the conclusion that the solenoid is at fault. Now we just have to swap the solenoid out with a quality replacement. I recommend the OEM part so we don't have to do it twice.

you left out the best part where you hook up the scanner and go for a test drive and get pulled over by a cop 😂. love you, wear your seatbelt.

That would’ve been a great comic relief for the middle of the video!

Love your videos. As one of the advocates for scopes you channel is one of my favorites. You have an excellent way of explaining things. You weekly waveform series got me hooked on scopes. I am an industrial generator tech. They do not only come in useful for engine diagnostics but they help with power quality and harmonic troubleshooting. I started with HSCOPE and got an E Scope 8 ch as well as the limited. After that I caught the bug and got a couple Verus , Pico and Micsigs. Even though I have the higher end scopes I love my Hantek 6074 mounted to my Samsung tablet. The ease of use and being able to save reports with samsung notes and review files on my phone via the hscope app makes it really usefull. The Hantek windows software is trash. Its amazing how well the app works. I have a HS502 coming in the mail this week. I have a Launch X431 installed on the tablet. Using it with split screen with Hscope running makes it like a poor mans Scanner - Scope. I tend to grab that over my Verus. Sorry for the long comment.

It sound like you have a great setup. I’m not a fluent android user so I always struggle with the hscope. I need to learn because there are some powerful setups for the android tablets. The launch/ThinkDiag/topdon scan tools have some great features and often out perform autel and Snapon. I’ve been using the thinkdiag2 recently and can’t believe how capable it is. Thanks for watching and your continued support. Have a great holiday and stay safe.

Great and informative video! We have a 2008 Trailblazer as well and we first had an issue with the VVT solenoid throwing the same exact code so we ended up replacing the original solenoid with an aftermarket one from AutoZone, it did good from that point until just recently and we're getting the code again so I need to inspect and see what we're dealing with. If it ends up needing to be replaced I'll make sure to get an exact OEM one. When the P0014 code is thrown, it's here and there so definitely an intermittent issue at this point!

Thanks. I went with the ACdelco vvt solenoid. I always try to go OEM on VVT parts.

@@ThePracticalMechanic cool man, I use dorman, I use dorman because dorman makes timing chains and gears, it's been 2 yrs still strong, acdelco vvt solenoid made in China, they all do ,even sensors, dorman china made also

I have a 03 gmc envoy and I have a parasitic battery drain overnight and every time it starts to act up I get a P0014 code... Sometimes it goes away by replying relays 43/45 but lately that trip trick isn't working...
@ThePracticalMechanic
@ThePracticalMechanic Год назад
Low battery won’t cause these codes and neither will the relays. You more than likely have two completely separate issues. You may want to perform some of the testing in the video to see if the solenoid is your issue.

At end of video you mentioned you unplugged the vvt. So the vehicle will operate properly without the vvt?
