I've got an 1100 air cooled and a S4R liquid cooled monster and they're both great. Throttle or fueling down low in RPMs is notoriously poor on Ducati's of this era. If you have issues higher up in the revs you might need to adjust the throttle cable. Agree with a lot of your other comments, I find a lot of enjoyment wrestling a bike around but you're right it can get exhausting. The lever pull on the clutch is probably my least favorite thing about both of them, it's just very tiring for long rides. It also makes city traffic pretty miserable in general. I really enjoy working on them as well, it can seem a little scary working on an italian bike, but there's lots of good information out there and if you take your time and are patient they're really different and interesting bikes.

Man it sounds like you have cool examples of both air and water cooled Ducati's! Do you have a personal favorite between the two? The S4R has a little more power right? My S2R seems to be real smooth in the upper RPM's so being a bit twitchy down low must just be part of the beast, like your were saying.

@@PastorMattMoto Yeah the S4R has about 20 more horsepower, but they make their power in different ways. The air cooled 2 valve motor is a bit like a chevy LS engine where all the meat is in the middle and you just have torque for days. The 4v liquid cooled motor is a bit more like a ford v8 where the engine doesn't really come alive until higher in the rev range. Where the 1100 is starting to lose steam about 7k rpm the S4R is really hitting the meat of it's powerband. Personal favorite - the 1100 has the more modern frame and seating position and feels much more capable in the corners, but the S4R is more comfortable and just looks way cooler. I think my favorite would depend on the day.

Hey Mitchell, nice catch I am in Wisconsin, but more in the middle of state around Sparta and Lacrosse in the driftless area. Excellent riding around here, only thing is the winter time... and the deer of course :p. Are you in the area as well?

I bought a brand new one in 2008 as my first ever motorcycle, it took some time learning to ride it. I fully agree with your comments, though once you get used to it, it’s awesome to drive hard. For city traffic and light cruising it’s definitely not comfortable. I sold it after 13 years, and I’m now sorry I did. Even though I own a Diavel 1260s now, I can’t really use its power, and I end up thinking of my old, fully modded S2R.

I've heard the new Diavels are beasts, I haven't had the chance to ride one yet though. I do agree with you on the usable power for the road, it seems to me around 100 horse is in the sweet spot for usable FUN power on the road. Once you get up to 150 and more it seems to get a bit out of hand lol. Especially with sport bikes you end up having about 3 gears that you rarely use :p

I miss mine too sir… after the decat and upgraded ECU I could get 80miles out of a tank😂 I rode that thing to hell and back, dailied it with Pirelli Supercorsa’s, did trackdays, commutes… if they started producing that thing I wouldn’t hesitate one bit

Currently have a Ducati ST2 2000, have had many bikes over the past 54 years of riding. Looking for an old monster, got to have a dry clutch, only way to go! The Ducati twin mid-range is awesome for street riding. People talking about hard clutch pull with hydraulic clutch's, cracks me up. If you were riding in the 1960's, 1970's, 1980's or earlier. When most if not all, were cable actuated. You would have the hand strength to pull on a hydraulic clutch like it moved on it's own! Kiddies nowadays! You can go aftermarket if the clutch pull is just to much for you to handle!

The mid range is amazingly punchy on these bikes isn't it!! When you hit the power band just right, it rips! When I made this video I was dealing with tendinitis in my left arm, so I'm pretty sure that affected my opinion on the clutch pull. :(. I'm a musician as part of my job as a Youth Pastor, so I play and record alot on the guitar with our band. My arm has improved alot since switching guitars, and playing 7 string less, now I actually don't think about clutch pull much on my current bikes.

@@PastorMattMoto On the old cable pull bikes. If you had not ridden for a month or two. Had not worked out your clutch hand. First day, hand would get tired. Second day, would have trouble pulling the clutch in, to the point you could not. Third - fourth day, still sore, but able to pull the clutch in. After that, can work the clutch all day, no soreness. Those old cable pull clutches were a great hand strength exercise. The cable throttles were also harder, as the return springs were stronger. As stuck throttle was common back then. Got scary if you were pushing it, close throttle, still at full throttle. If you cannot get it closed, have to use kill switch! Many bikes came with push pull throttle cables. Two cables, one to open, one to close. The carburator barrel's would get sticky from fuel & wear, combined with air velocity. Barrel would stick wide open. Hence the two cable solution. Not an issue with efi with cable or by wire control on the newer bikes. Though as a programmer. I do worry about programming bugs with the new fly by wire throttle control. If it sticks wide open due to software bug or hardware failure. No way to manually roll it back. Be quick on the kill switch!

You should have 3 keys, 2 black and the essential red key that is paired with the clocks and the ECU. I have a 2007 with the DP ECU and Arrow pipes, friends that have ridden it say she’s very good.

Great review! I think this monster would be one day collectible and go up in value a lot, as it is the last original air cooled monster. I have monster 1100 which is also very nice but you have original 😉. I wish sometime that it would make little bit more ponies from that desmo due engine. 110hp would be ideal. Which is most enjoyable bike from all bikes you have?

Yeah I agree Alex, another 20 horses would be good on my Monster. It's really fun as is, but it has pretty limited top end. All its pulling power really is in the midrange! But you know what I mean since you have a Monster too. By the way, impressive Ducati wheelie on your channel, I'm not great at wheelie's myself!

Most enjoyable hmmm......I would say easiest to live with, is the 2019 Speed Triple.....but the Ducati is probably more raw fun in the corners :)

@@PastorMattMoto this old air cooled engine unfortunately doesn’t have any top end. It is flat after 6000 revs till rev limiter. Only solution is to buy water cooled Ducati 😂. I would keep mine for next season and would see. I am tempted to try old street fighter 1098. In my opinion looks better than new one with that trellis frame. Still original Ducati with dry clutch. On the other hand big advantage of monster is that it is very light and nimble. How often I would need those extra ponies on the backroads that’s the question 😂?

@@PastorMattMoto I am just a beginner in wheelies😂. But thanks! It is very easy to wheelie monster 1100, it has instant torque and lifts front wheel in much slower speeds compared to my gsxr.

@@PastorMattMoto I agree. Air cooled L twin is raw and agricultural. You have to change gears often it has a lot of vibrations. So to live with it daily is not for everyone compared to 4,3 cylinder engines.

the S2R's really do have a lot of grunt don't they!! I probably was rolling on a little more gradually, that's why the front wheel was staying down :p

@@zackmgisclair I rode this bike for 50.000km’s, on and off track, there’s no way the front wheel lifts without popping the clutch in 2nd and 3rd gear… maybe if you have a larger rear sprocket or something but still, it’s too heavy

I have an 07 S2r1000. Absolutely love everything about the bike. It’s alittle choppy down low but not bad. Nothing like my old M900. Just need to ride in the gear up from where you’d assume since they have so much power down low. Idk what all the guy I bought the bike from has done to it. Nothing is stock. From handle bars and turn signals to exhaust and lights nothing is stock. He had the bike mapped and tuned he says. What surprises me is that I ride with a lot of guys who have 600s and my s2r eats 600s alive. Judging by stock specs you wouldn’t think that to be true

Wow it sounds like you got a good one! 👍. I bet it's got a bunch more torque than the 600's you are riding with! So if you guys are doing twisty roads, you are going to walk away from them, unless they are keeping their revs wayyyy up.

@@zacha8934 For sure! I think that is why naked bikes have gained so much popularity over the last few years. They are the tuned for the road, the right tool for the job, so to speak. Don't get me wrong supersports are excellent in their element on the track, but 80 in first gear and making all your power above 8k or 9k rpms isn't exactly what you should be looking for on public roads, I believe :p
