The 2008 winter solstice as seen by the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner ArcticCam. Images were captured at a rate of about 4 images per minute for entire shortest day of the year. The playback of the over 5000 images of the 24 hour period takes 3 minutes. The moon, the sun and Jupiter all are seen by the unblinking eye of the ArcticCam. For more great music by Lacy J Dalton. Note the faulty street light on the right side flashing on and off almost in time with the music. From 0:40 through 0:49 the video capture of a cloud rushing toward the Moon that is about to appear. This may be a reponse to an "Air Tide"

Not as dark as I thought. Twilight lasts longer the further you are from the equator. Looks like about 7 hours of daylight+ twilight.

bafa7353 Yes, if we include twilights there are actually 8 hours of "light" (8:30 a.m - 4:30 p.m.)... But I consider as "light" the time in which street lights turn on/off, which is 10:15 a.m - 15:30 p.m., that's about 5 hours and 15 minutes as you can see. Blue nautical twilight's light is too dim to consider that as daytime

I was wondering why there was so much activity in the parking lot at the beginning of the video (just after midnight) but little activity toward the end (approaching midnight). Sure enough, the video starts on a Saturday night and ends on a Sunday night. Must be a tavern there, and it's hopping all the way until 4:00 a.m. when they turn out their lights.

To get true darkness you have to get to Svalbard.. 1000 miles north of Fairbanks..

The only thing I don’t like about this place is that there’s nothing but pine trees.

Technically Fairbanks dosen't receive the midnight sun on the solstice since it isn't high enough a latitude. Fairbanks is located at 64 Degrees north and the midnight sun is around 66-67 Degrees north so it falls just under not having any sun. Great video though :)

If Fairbanks does not receive the midnight sun, then it does not have polar nights during the winter.

Max Chan Exactly... As you can see in this video Fairbanks has no polar night, since 21st december is the shortest day of the year on boreal hemisphere

@alexandrebuisson8158, I agree with you. We can see that on the video. Why are these people insisting otherwise?

This is so wrong. Daytime was way too short.

I wonder: What time did the sunrise occur and what time did the sun sets?

The video started 2008 12/21/1200 AM and stopped 12/22/0200 AM. Unless you select HD the time is hard to read.

Thank you. The half-looking moon came out right before dawn like it's supposed to, even in Fairbanks, Alaska!

Do you honestly think these sun times look right to you, the sun rising at 12 noon and staying up for 4 WHOLE HOURS !?! Noon is the time of day when the sun is at its HIGHEST point in the sky, thus dividing the AM from the PM. Something looks amiss here.
