Classic Musclecars equals Stock Factory motor setup, full interior with seats, no switches or buttons for and No Nitrous, No supercharger, no tubbed wheel wells, stock interior. Good drivers... Ahhhh….. those good old days. Now you have trailer queens with $20k-30K Racing engines with nitrous claiming "Stock"... FOH... Great video my friend !
Thanks for this 🤠👍🏽 I always wonder how fast these unmodified factory stock cars would be with modern tires. This is one of the best racing videos on RU-vid.
@@netrioterNo, that would be the F.A.S.T. class. This is the pure stock class. Engines can be rebuilt with slight raise in compression but have to have original carb, intake, exhaust man. and factory spec cam lifters and rockers. Sorry
Refreshing to see all naturally-aspirated cars. Sure, the Hellcat and ZL1 Camaro have power, but remove the superchargers and they don't make any more power than the big blocks made a half-century ago. And the big blocks still made more torque.
beautiful muscle in all shapes and colors.takes me back to 1967 crusing on sat. nights. showed off our muscle cars and mabey a race out if town on a farm road.then everyone went to mels resturant to talk about the race over fries and a coke then back to the cruise route until early morning!
chevelle 396/375 was the popular street/drag car to beat where i lived in the late sixties. i remember one gto, a mustang, a nova...maybe one challenger. i also remember a dodge ram pickup with a racing automatic transmission. that truck was fast as hell.
Maybe he might have gotten in the fourteens if not for that hat in that nice 61 vette. Now me I put the top up in my 62 vette when I run, so my hat & hair don't blow off. LOL
You can tell which ones have the better rear ends because the ones leading in the middle of the race don't always win the other one starts pulling around them that have track great racing
I had a plum crazy 70 hemi Cuda with a 4-speed, super track pack, console delete with a black hockey stick and interior. I sold it years back along with several other nice Mopars.
I had a 69' 383 RoadRunner, I knew those old car would be classics so I had planned to keep mine and this was in the 70s. Some b1tch backed out of a parking spot without looking and messed up my right front fender and I only had liability insurance. Her insurance wanted to total just because the whole fender would need to be replaced, we finally settled with a check. So my mother knew someone that did body work after hours on the side. While he had possession someone vandalized it, knocked out the glass and broke into it. I was already strapped for money. The car got fixed but was a half ass job and was never happy with it so I ended up selling it. If had it now I could afford to have it restored.
Good to see the factory muscle cars go at it instead of the bored and supercharged hot rods that are running in so many of the videos. The original Super Stock class and maybe the SSX are most interesting, you really have to set them up and fine tune the car plus the skill of the driver to come out a winner.
Love the idea of this, factory stock drag racing...but the 11 second firebird at the front of this video killed the illusion for me. That car is in factory form you say? Sure. And Bigfoot was driving it with a half tank of unicorn tears.
Another thing to remember the tires are way better today then they were when these cars were first tested. They probably get another .5-1 sec just from having better tire compound.
Summary of comments: 1) No way these cars are stock 2) Yes, they are, except for the tires 3) No, they're not. The following mods are allowed: (Fill in the blanks) 4) Who cares? It's just great to see all this muscle racing.
The drag race guys ordered the headers cam intake big carbs and deep gears. When they hook up they do good . Smart ones ported and gasket matched and then tuned. Then there's the driver to add to the equation.
Those Buick 455 Engines were amazing- pulling a heavy car that fast they had to have been near 500hp - the L88 427 was also a beast in the light corvette they must have been down right scary on the street- god i wud love to drive one
In 1972 I found a wrecked 1969 GTO Judge 12K miles at Abel Auto Wrecker in Fremont, Ca. I took the engine and tranny out and put them into my 1968 Firebird hardtop. Took it to Fremont drags where it turned, 12.81 @116 mph ..with 3.23 gears.
ZL1 Camaros ran low 13s in the 108 MPH range back when they were truly new and production line stock. The cars in this series have been heavily MODIFIED.
These Are not all completely stock cars. These “Stocker” meets have certian specs the cars are required to make. Your allowed a pre determined: rise and duration on your cam, cylinder bore, crank stroke, CFM for your carbs, exhaust diameter, weight, and ignition. So if your motor is under these specs you get away with those mods. Been drag racing for 30 years. We run a stocker Max Wedge class with a 63 Plymouth Sport Fury With a 426 Wedge. I run 10.60’s around 130mph.
You're correct, to a point. They aren't Stocker engines, though. You can't play around with the camshaft like they can with Stocker cams. They CAN cut the heads to raise compression a bit, but that's about it. Has to have stock carb with choke, stock ignition (no MSD boxes), stock exhaust manifolds. You can blueprint all you want, but the internals have to be stock.
"Factory stock" is a misnomer in that a host of modifications are permitted. For example, the engines can be bored .060" over, 3 angle valve jobs can be employed, combustion chambers can be cc'd to NHRA specified minimums, drag oriented suspensions can be employed as can modern mandrel bent 2.5" exhaust systems and so on. See "pure stock drags" website for more information.
Truth be told muscle cars from 53 -72 had more power than the tires and suspension could handle. On the street alot of brutal cars either went up in smoke or the driver was not able to handle the horses. Myself embarrassed alot brutal street machines with a small block car with a 2barrel carb single exhaust. My shop teacher was a professional drag racer and he helped me set my sleeper up. They always demand I show them the motor. They couldn't believe a stock small block was that fast. With that said most muscle cars of past were close in power and preformance on the street. The one's who dominated were the ones who really understand drag racing. Although I have to admit the GS Buicks and ram air Pontiacs dissapointed alot of bad ass cars.
What makes American Iron so special is they just look and sound bad ass going down the track. I don't care if you have a 9 sec 4 banger ricer with 5 turbos they are just annoying and irritating in the way they look and sound going down a track. The same feeling I get when I see them buzzzzzing around the street. Not cool just irritating.
All of you saying these are NOT stock - Remember the crappy bias ply tires they had back then & the compounds they spray (for traction), onto the tracks to prep the tracks with that -1) they didn't even use back then, or 2) were inferior to the compounds & products sold today. B/c of technology, much has improved in the past 45 years with the exception of ppl's morals :( Sad
Okay, better tires = better times. Please explain some cars picking up 10MPH or more! That is a LOT of HP difference over stock - too much just to assume its the result of better tuning.
@@CJ-ib2jy dude the faster they hook the faster than can begin solidly accelerating. Its no surprise they pick up 10 mph. If you spun for 60ft the 60ft less you got to accelerate which will lose you speed aswell as time
@@muffdiver777yummy8 When I used to run cars, my time changed by up to 0.75 seconds depending on how I hooked or how bad I lit my tires. But my speed at the end didn't vary hardly at all.
@@428CJ70 but if your spinning tire then you arent accelerating full on and the farther your traveling with tire spin the lesser your distance is to accelerate properly it doesnt make sense that their times can change but their speeds would remain the same. Cause 20 foot of spin means 20 feet less to get up to speed and ex amount of time lost. Its like if you start a car 1/4 of the way down the track its speed is gunna be less than one farther back
Anyone else notice on the 455’s Trans Am’s they’re behind off the line .. but mid way that torque motor kicks in and pulls for the win. Almost everyone. Also with the 455 Buick’s GS’s. My friend had one .. and back in the early 80’s he raced a lot .. GTO judge.. 440 mopars .. he would get beat off the line .. but always pulled in front at the end. Those 455’s were very underrated motors.
all american muscle will never die, 12 n 13s down a quarter in my time was quick and fun .my 1st gen camaro will still run high 12 sec down the quarter and its a great time.
How many MODIFICATIONS did you have to make to get your 1st generation Camaro to run "high 12s. Even production line stock ZL1 Camaros (untouched and with full factory exhaust, air filter and all engine accessories in place) couldn't run 12s.
