Awesome. I got a 2012. I'm about to use this idea to transplant myself from Texas to Oregon. I can't stand living in a big city anymore already in my 30s.
This setup is very helpful. I’m in Chicago and ready to move out the city to some where with more trees and less noise! Sending good vibes for your move.
This video was great, I just got myself a Fit and will be taking a long road trip this summer in it and I think this is my favorite setup yet. Thanks for sharing!
This is great! I have a 2009 Fit as well and I’ve been looking at ideas for converting it into a camper. The cot idea is genius! I’ve seen so many do the wood platform but for me it isn’t feasible, not now at least. Thank you for sharing your ideas and the link to the cot! 🙃
I've had my 2011 since year one, LOVE IT, and always had an interest in doing something like this. I bought a 98 Ford E350 Club Wagon in 2017 and have spent the last 5 years casually working on converting it to a camper. It's been great, lots of adventures with my son, but I decided to give him the van this year since my circumstances don't allow for road trips in the van any more. I've been struggling with letting go of the van, but decided to check out what people were doing with their Fits for camping. That led me here, and immediately after watching your video I bought a cot to try this. Suddenly the option of car camping has become available again. Back to basics. Thanks for the inspiration!
That's awesome! Yeah, it's definitely basic, but it gets the job done. Keeps you dry and warm and much more comfortable than sleeping on the floor! Good on you for givi g your son the van. Hopefully you'll both have amazing adventures in your future.
Great set up! I’ve been on the fence about buying a minivan or just making my Honda Fit work for camping. I really like the cot idea so you have space underneath for storage. I love my Honda Fit! Thank you for sharing!
I have just converted my Honda FIT 2008 for me and my dog plus as I am in a wheel chair I had to make room for that so looking at your set up mine is cool.
Does your cot require any customization? Have you got a link/size/dimension of the cot on amazon? Edit: I saw your other response, it was "Stansport Weekender Folding Cot", however do you think other sized cots would fit the Honda Fit? Maybe something like the "Coleman Converta Cot Portable Bed"?
Both have advantages. With the cot, I can have access to my stuff without having to get out of the car. I can also for different size stuff too. The platform fits a fun size mattress and is warmer, especially with 2 people. If I'm going solo, it's the cot all the way. But with a friend, the platform is a must.
hey man what size cot did you get? i'm about to do a very similar build in mine. Thanks so much for the cot idea!! it saves me from building things out of wood.
@@mrtwinkie0 getting myself well acclimated to the 1-2night car camping. still trying to figure out what's optimum. I do find having my roofbox removes a lot of clutter in my 'cabin area' especially when i have my roadbike, all gears and front wheels fits in the roofbox!
You're a clever guy, getting all that gear to FIT into your car! My main question to you, how tall are you? I'm nearly 6' 2", I have a feeling I'm too tall...?!
Hi Ken, just an awesome setup! I have a 2009 Fit sport and your video was just a big time saver and effort to figure out the simplest way to convert it to a camper. Thank you so much!
Hi Kenneth- I have a 2009 Honda Fit and am hoping to take it camping, but ideally with the hatchback open overnight. I'm wondering if you have ever done this with this car and how it went? Did the car battery handle it ok? That is my main concern. Thanks for the help!
Hi Marie! I've definitely thought about that. I assume your concern is with the light that automatically turns on with the trunk open, correct? If that's the case, all you need to do is trick the car to think that the latch to the trunk is closed. You can do that by taking a screw driver or something that can fit inside the trunk door latch and close it while the trunk is open. This should turn off the light. You'll just need to make sure to open it back up before closing your trunk by pulling on the trunk door lever.
@@mrtwinkie0 Yes that's the main concern- I don't *think* there is anything else besides the light that would drain the battery but I haven't tried it out myself yet. This is great, I'll try this out! Thanks for the help!
Yes, I'm so excited! Best set-up I've found. I've been trying to solve as I'm *slightly* too tall for the back-only but don't want to do a complicated build. Thanks for sharing!
this is great, however, im confused why people dont take out the back seat for extra space and to take off unnecessary weight -- is there a reason? i am looking to convert my honda fit.
It comes down to how permanent you want your setup to be. Mine is only in when I'm camping. Otherwise it's a regular car. Too much effort to always remove the seats. If it were permanent, I'd for sure take the seats out!
The wood platform I built houses 2 people. For this trip I was riding solo, and having the cot makes things more accessible. My wood platform is pretty high and had a good amount of storage space, but it takes awhile to setup and break down everyday. I also wouldn't be able to fit the bike underneath. I may build a wooden platform for solo use in the future, but the cot works fine for now
Kenneth Dong oh awesome! Thanks! With the cot did you take out the back seat? Or did you just extend the legs on one side of the bed? I was planning on buying a van for a cross country trip but I might just use my fit!
@@LuisVillalobosYT I just put the back seats down and the front seat all the way flat. I have a cot that looks like this stansport.com/weekender-folding-cot-g-72/. The legs fit perfectly. If you look around 2:11, you can see how the front seat is down under the cot.
