My brothers 2009 Honda Pilot started running rough and the check engine light started blinking. After towing the Pilot to his house we borrow a code reader from a neighbor. It gave us P0302 Cylinder 2 Misfire. After searching Google we found TSB SB-10-063 which requires replacing the fouled plugs and updating the PCM. I didn't realize how easy it was to get access to the spark plugs.
A side note: The to outer cylinders closet to the passenger compartment were a little difficult to get my extension in but with a little time I got all plugs changed in less than 15 minutes.

Thanks for the video. Changing those back three plugs are a challenge. My first car was a 1978 Monte Carlo. When I changed the plugs in it, I could almost put a lawn chair and a cooler under the hood with me to make the experience even more pleasant.

I just watched this video and replaced the spark plugs in my wife's 2009 Pilot. It was not difficult and took about 45 minutes or so. I will add that it was easier for me to jump up in the engine compartment and lay across the engine to reach the back spark plugs. Also, be careful when you pop the cover back on the top of the engine. I used a little too much manual persuasion to seat the fasteners closest to the firewall and cracked the plastic. The rubber in the spark plug socket I was using was bad. I used the coil packs to extract the plugs once they were loose. It worked great. Thank you for the video.

I’m a single mom and 36 years old. I have not had the 250 plus wanted for them to change my number 2 coil and spark. Thanks to your video I decided to give it a try. I spent $60 on the spark plug and coil. It took me less than 20 min to change them both out and it fixed my issue completely . Thank you so much for this video. Saved me a lot of money. I have a 2011 pilot and it was identical to yours

The rear are a challenge. Here is what made it easy for me. Put a blanket or towel over the engine. Use a step stool and basically climb up laying on top of the engine. You have to feel most of what your doing. There is enough room to see some. the middle plug was easy. The two outer just take your time with the extension. You may even have to release the socket into the spark plug sleeve and then attach the extension giving enough room around the tubes in the area.

Super helpful and well thought out video. I know this engine reasonably well having done the timing belt and valve clearances and your video was still really helpful. Especially the notes about the error codes and Honda TSP (I think that's what you called it). Thanks.

don't get intimidated its just a machine built by man. nothing to it but to do it. I started off with small stuff and can build an engine now.

I was investigating P0300/P0301/P0302 for a friend today and came across this video. I decided to call the dealer and he said that they've issued an extended warranty on this vehicle for this particular problem. They'll repair it for free when I take it in. (Toronto, Canada)

Awesome tutorial I just fixed mines...I didn't double extend I just used an medium extension...you have to place the 5/8 socket inside first before you insert the extension and you definitely have to place a cover over the engine so you get on top and be able to reach the cylinder 2 socket....the mirror tip was sooooo helpful....thanks again....and if the socket don't hold on the spark plug....use the coil pack to take out the plug.

Just got rid of our 2006. At 80000 miles, it used a qt. of oil every 500 miles. Foul # 3 &4. Honda said that's not a problem. No more Honda's for us, but for those that have one, your vid will sure help!

Changing the plugs fixes the engine but not the problem. Disabling the vcm will prevent the misfiring from happening again. There are a variety of ways to do this. I disabled the vcm on my 2010 honda accord (which had two misfires in 67000 miles, p0303 and p0301) by installing the vcmuzzler 2. There are other devices that work too. Plenty of information on the internet. I highly recommend disabling vcm.

How do you gain access to the spark plugs closest to the dashboard? There's no room back there.

Hey Damien, since you just did yours, let me ask....how the heck do i squeeze back there to access the 1,2,3 cylinders. My issue is with cylinder 3. There isn't more than an 6-7inch gap between the manifold and the edge of the windshield. Did you have to remove anything to access this? There is a plastic compartment along edge of the windshield that I assume holds some heating/cooling components. Also there is a coolant line up against that edge of the underside right across from those coil packs that I am afraid to go near with my tools (ie. dont want to puncture the line). Do they expect mechanics to just stick the extension bar down there and reach their hands in there without good vantage?
@damienmadden2260
@damienmadden2260 2 года назад
@@jaylev85 I had to lay on top of the engine to get in there. You'll have to rotate your socket wrench, it's a tight squeeze but I got it done.

It's due to piston rings I was a honda mechanic. Cylinder management when the other cylinders kicked in the plugs would be fouled out due to oil bypassing the rings. Changing the plugs is a temporary fix but not a long term solution.
@extendedp1
@extendedp1 2 года назад
What is the long term solution? My 2010 Pilot with 70k miles just developed this problem I think. Thanks

I had to change my #1 plug this morning. Its insulator tip and electrode were black. The gap was coated with oil and looked fuzzy, like a shop towel. Would preventing three cylinders from shutting down be a viable workaround for this problem? If so, how do you do it?
@fiero880
@fiero880 7 лет назад
They just need to get rid of the cylinder shut down all together. It just causes problems.

I believe the 2009 has the warranty piston ring issue where it lets oil get into the cylinder and causes Mis Fire and burning oil take it to the dealer and see if it is in campaign for piston rings

Hey, man, after you pulled the 10mm nut and removed that "sleeve", does that expose the top of the spark plug? You actually skipped over the actual removal of the plug itself... thanks for the good video!
@classicjag76
@classicjag76 4 года назад
Yes, once you take the coil pack off you are ready for the spark plug socket. I found it easier to use two different sockets; one with a rubber insert for extraction and another without the rubber piece for insertion.

FYI, there is a lot of info, regarding the 2009-2013 Pilots, as well as other Honda models using the V6 VCM2 engine and misfires. As well, there is a class action law suit pending against Honda for this issue. The lawsuit will be decided on in March. It has to do with codes 301, 302, 303 and 304. The suit will offer reimbursement for any $$ spent fixing anything related to these codes as well as an extended warranty to address any issues related to these codes. All the info can be found at: enginemisfiresettlement.com

Gapping requirement?
@gregnixon1296
@gregnixon1296 4 года назад
The Pilot requires iridium plugs, which are pre-gapped. Setting the gap is not required.

How often have you needed to change plugs? Mine is doing it again second time in about 10-15k miles. So I’m probably gonna get rid of it as it seems the rings are bad keep letting oil into the cylinder and fouling the plug.
