After lots of thought, and reviewing at least 30 RU-vid videos on the “Cheesegrater MacPro’s” I decided to rebuild my own MacPro 2012+. The end result has 1) 12-core 3.46Ghz, 2) 128gb ECC RAM, 3) 2TB NVME m.2 OS drive, 4) 2TB SSD scratch drive, 5) 4x 12tb Ironwolf HDD’s (2-separate MacRAIDs), 6) Radeon RX 580 GPU, 7) 2TB Seagate 2.5” 5400 drive in the lower optical bay for a Timemachine drive, 8) USB 3.1 Pcie card, and 9) UCB C Pcie card. Running Mojave. The only issue in the build was stabilizing the GPU & Mojave mix. I completed the entire project 3-days before Apple announced the MacPro 2019. No regrets, because someday I will upgrade to the MacPro 2019, and I will simply transfer the NVME drive from the 2012 to the 2019. Once I do that, I will take out one of the USB Pcie cards, replace it with a 10Gbit eithernet card, and turn the machine into a long-term storage server.

I love the form factor of this model. I had a Power Mac G5 Dual 2.0, then a 2009 (4,1>5,1). And now I have a 2012 3.2 GHz. Just installed an RX580 8GB and upgraded the WiFi (to 802.11ac) and Bluetooth (to 4.0) to get Handoff and Continuity,

For anyone looking for an inexpensive cMP, a good place to check is your local university's surplus store. The one by me sells them for as low as $80. The 4,1 and 5,1 models tend to go on auction and can run up to around $300-ish, but that is still a good deal. I got lucky and my dual processor 4,1 and single processor 5,1 were $80 each (and the 5,1 came with 32GB of 1333 OWC RAM already in it, so that alone was more than worth the $80). They probably won't come with HDs, but you will be wanting to upgrade to SSD/NVMe anyway, so...

You, Luke Miani, Hrutkay mods and a host of others are the reason why in 2019/2020 a lot of people's pockets, purses and wallets became that much lighter. You are, in fact, the very reason I decided an upgrade was needed for my 5,1 cMP, I didn't know I needed to until I watched your vid, subscribed and now like most, here we are, Thank you.

Actually the achilles heal of this Mac Pro is the fact that it has a SATA 2 motherboard. The good thing is that it has two x16 PCI slots and two x4 PCI slots. You can also max your RAM at 64GB on the unit you have - go with the faster RAM at 1333 MHz as you can do so now that your unit is 5,1. Instead of replacing the CPU tray for $450-$500 you can buy a used 2009 Mac Pro 4,1 and flash to 5,1. I picked up 2 of these on Craigslist for $270 and $400 (average price of $335). CPU upgrades were $140 for 2 CPUs running at 3.33GHz for the X5680 model. Make sure to get the delidded version if you are buying a 2009 4,1 Mac Pro dual processor unit. What I do recommend is not to max out the RAM at 128GB - you will lose performance. Max your RAM at 96GB - 3 DIMMS per CPU. And finally if you'd like to get more speed get 2 of the EVO 970's and run them at RAID 0. Get a slightly more expensive card for about $200 - I got the Syba I/O Crest SI-PEX40129 Dual M.2 NVMe - make sure to run it off of your bottom x16 slot - you will HD speeds of 3-4GBps with these in a RAID 0 array. Move the RX580 to the second x16 slot - excellent card BTW. I also made some other upgrades such as adding USB 3, changing the optical drive to a Blu-Ray Reader / Writer and filled my hard drive bays with WD 7200RPM HDs.

Ok, now that sounds cool. Yeah I honestly have thought about just grabbing a second 4,1 Dual CPU anyway. Maybe I will at some point and go all out. I have 48GB of RAM currently to take advantage of the triple channel speeds you mentioned actually

@@ClipPlayTV Just go on Craigslist - people have kind of forgotten about it. I picked up a mint condition 4,1 Mac Pro for $270 - yes I had to drive into NYC to get it but heck - it was worth it - and this unit was in amazing condition. It didn't have Bluetooth or Wifi but that got fixed with a Bluetooth Dongle (ASIN B0792NSF7M) and a Wifi adapter (ASIN B07P5PRK7J) - the Bluetooth has to have a Broadcom Chipset because that's Apple's native Bluetooth Chipset provider - it's plug and play. All in all with all the stuff I bought (for one of my employees) everything including the tower cost me less than $1100. Here's the breakdown: 1) 2 x X5680 CPUs running at 3.33GHz - $140 2) 1 x NewerTech MAXPower 4-Port USB 3.1 - $39 3) 1 x Crucial BX500 1TB 3D NAND SATA 2.5-Inch Internal SSD - $100 4) Sapphire Radeon Pulse RX 580 - $175 5) Sonnet Allegro USB 3.2, Two-Port USB-C 10Gb PCIe Card - $60 6) Dual Mini 6 Pin to 8 Pin PCI Express Video Card Power Adapter - $13 7) TP-Link USB Wifi Adapter for PC AC600Mbps Wireless Network Adapter - $17 8) USB Smart Bluetooth 4.0 Dongle - $17 9) NewerTech MAXPower 4-Port USB 3.1 Gen 1 PCIe Controller Card - $35 10) LG Electronics 14x SATA Blu-ray Internal Rewriter - $55 11) ORICO 2.5 to 3.5 Hard Drive Adapter HDD SSD Mounting Bracket Tray - $9 12) 96GB (6x16GB) PC3-8500R 4Rx4 DDR3 ECC - $122 Parts Cost = $782 CPU Tower cost = $270 GW Bridge Toll + Gas = $28 Total Cost - $1080

I'm using a Samsung Evo "Plus" NVME on my Mac Pro 5,1. But this SSD needs a Firmware Update, which you have to install on an USB boot stick (the easiest way to do it is on a PC). And then you have to boot your Mac Pro from the USB Boot Stick an run the firmware update. So, the "Plus" works, but it's a bit of a hassle and getting an Evo (without plus) is definitely the way to go.

I accomplished the full upgrade several months (processor upgrade/32GB ram upgrade) ago and have not looked back. On geek-bench multi-core test; my Mac Pro comes in around 26400. I have not upgraded to the NVME M.2. Although, Black Magic shows Read/Write in the 1300's with the Samsung Evo 970 as you showed, not sure if I would see that much of a performance boost from my current SSD in normal video production. One additional comment, the system is whisper quiet. I did click on three of the Amazon links. Thanks for the informative video.

It sucks the stopped supporting these Max’s with Catalina. There’s absolutely no reason to stop supporting them. You can upgrade those macs with decent enough specs to keep them relevant for many more years. The only reason Apple would stop support for them is to force people who want to stay up to date to upgrade to a different Mac machine.
@ClipPlayTV
@ClipPlayTV 4 года назад
It literally is capable of running Catalina once you get past the prevention method of installing it with the installer lol. I’m running the latest version of Catalina(10.15.4) daily now with zero issues. Makes me think they had initially planned to keep it supported possibly.

Single core may be the way to go as my dual core machine never seems to saturate all the cores with Photoshop.Premire, final cut etc. CPU tests sure, those use all the cores. The machine does stay very responsive when rendering etc. but it also makes a lot of heat which I think the single core would make less. if you are paying for electricity and running an AC to boot, all that heat is costing you $.

Hello ClipPlay TV and greetings to you from Ireland. I really loved your video on this, actually, all your videos are very informative, detailed and comprehensive. I would love to upgrade the stock 500GB SSD that came with my MacPro to the one you recommended.... but I don't have the experience or even understand how I could do on my working machine that I use day to day. Also... I'm currently on macOS Mojave and I have no boot screen... so super nervous that I might not be even able to install a new clean install of macOS Mojave on that new 1TB SSD. Would you know how I could make this upgrade with minimum impact to my working computer. I also have a DroboS QTY 15TB Storage as my Timemachine backup. Just thought I might mention that to give you more info. Would you have a link to the special Adaptor you used to install the new SSD..? Regards, Anthony

You could add fans in theory via usb power. Although you’d need to find a place to fit them in. Usually If I’m rendering something on occasion I just leave my side door panel off and it stays cool. I would also make sure you have plenty of space around the Mac Pro for air intake and outtake.

Hey! I would suggest going for a dual CPU 5,1 2010 Mac Pro! It’s still one of the best values for upgradability and reliability all around. You can also upgrade more components like the GPU than you can with an iMac. Even though these machines are much older, (if you grab a dual CPU especially) they still have plenty of life left in them. My Mac Pro is still my main workstation for all of my freelance video and photo work every day, and its only a single CPU model. Does the job perfectly, and then some.

Hi there. I have a Mac Pro Mid 2012, 3.46 (12 cores) with 48 GB ecc 1333 ram, 3 x 6tb Seagate Ironwolf (in raid 0, so 18 tb), SSD Mac Drive (WD Blue 500 GB) and a MSI Rx 580 8 GB (not an Apple card). Everything goes well, but the graphic card seems to cause problems. Exemple, if a have a third minitor connected for playback (it is a professionnal editing system), I can't export, or a red light in the motherboard will lit or the Mac Pro will not reboot. Do you think that this can be due to the fact that it's not an Apple native Msi graphic card? Should I replace with it the Apple version if this card? Thanks in advance.

Hey, I use a Mac Pro 4,1 2009 in a audio studio, but the processor is a quad core with 2,6 Ghz, which isn´t that powerful in logic pro x...Can I update just the processor without changing the whole motherboard?

You can go up to a 6 Core X5690 Xeon processor, which provides quite a bit more power. Relatively equivalent to a 4th generation Core i7 in terms of raw power.

How much rAM is in that 4,1 ? and are you flashed to 5,1 or on El Cap or earlier? What version of LPX? curious cuz I have a 4,1 w single 2.66 i'm thinking of flashing and using in a smaller studio. I have a dual 3.46 12 core 5,1 that does everything I throw at it. But the 4,1 is sitting here....

@@ClipPlayTV sounds like an air conditioner in the background. Anyway, my 2008 mac pro's wifi antenna sucks. Any recommendations on how to upgrade its wifi range and speed? I got a USB Wifi stick and it's working a lot better but it's still pretty slow.

JJ Schrick yeah haha. Gotta love shooting videos in Coffee shops eh? 😂 I would look into Ethernet cabling options if all else fails. Otherwise a good PCIE Solution night work best for you in terms of speed.

I personally use a Samsung 28” 4K display currently. It’s the best value at around $150-200 used IMO. Got mine used for $190 on EBay and will be adding a second soon👌

Great informative video. I'm pondering a replacement for my 2010 iMac. Do I go for a 2013 iMac or, a 2009 Mac Pro? I want expandability and USB 3.0. Main usage is Lightroom, Photoshop and general surfing the web. I might want to create music and have Logic Express. Mmmmmm

I recently bought 2009 Mac Pro that I need to update 4,1-5,1 but your link to the bios flash has been deleted. I followed some other instructions from other areas that send you to apple website that haven't worked. Any direction would be helpful. Once I can get this thing changed to 5,1 I will be thrilled.

I definitely did take this video as a learning experience. I recently switched to a full XLR audio rig I built this year, and just this week I narrowed down the humming frequency in this video down to the lights I was using. Got two new video lights yesterday. That with the techniques I’ve been learning and applying should help things continue to improve over time. Appreciate the constructive criticism, it’s very helpful!
