2009 Toyota Tacoma Review / Making Sense of Insanity

The 2nd generation Tacoma has a reputation for reliability and rust, but it is so much more than that. It's not only more reliable the the Ford Ranger, Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon, and Dodge Dakota, it's better. Today I explore the 2nd gen taco and why it might be worth the absurd amount of money they go for right now.

I bought a 2013 TRD Off Road in late 2012. It's been pretty much flawless for a decade. Love the rear locker and ATRAC when I go off road. I added a lift and winch for off road use. It's only got a bit over 60,000 miles on it but most of that is off road trips, as I have had 2 or 3 other vehicles for most of the time I've owned it. At the rate this truck is going I may just keep it forever.

Just picked up a 2009, same exact truck as yours. 268k kms for 11,000 CAD. Luckily frame looks very clean, just a few spots of surface rust. I like the 4 Cylinder so far. I just came from a 2001 3.4L V6 Tacoma so power feels similar.

While I haven't had any major problems with my V6 I do feel like the 2.7 will outlive any V6 Taco and handle abuse and neglect better. The 2.7 Taco will be the truck people drive during armageddon!

My Toyota Trucks since the first in 1988. 1. Used 86 2wd single cab 6 foot bed 4 cylinder 4 speed manual, 2. New 93 2wd extended cab 6 foot bed 4 cylinder 5 speed manual SR5, it had VENT WINDOWS ❤! 3. New 98 Tacoma extended cab TRD Offroad V6 5 speed manual ❤(the corner tie down eyes in this truck were the best tie down system of any generation !) 4. New 07 FJ Cruiser Fulltime 4wd 6 speed manual❤ (definitely my favorite 4wd system) 5. New 09 Tacoma SR5 extended cab 4wd 4 cylinder 5 speed manual (Unfortunately I totaled it) 6. New 2010 Tacoma 4 door TRD Offroad 6 speed manual. New frame at 95k for FREE in 2018, with a bunch of new Toyota parts in installed at no or greatly reduced labor cost. This is still my daily driver, I love it for the most part, has 137k and I plan to drive it till the end of time. I have no interest in the 3rd generation because there's no replacement for displacement ! I'd rather have the corner tie downs of the older trucks and especially the 1st gen Tacoma, because you could tie down things that were several inches below the sides of the bed and they were steel bolted to steel and not plastic, although the track system does work well enough for items that are taller than the track system, but you can't ratchet strap things down as tightly as the old system. I'd love to find another 86 like my first truck. I still see them on the road a few times a year. It is to me like the Stargazer was to Captain Picard.

Last year I was deciding between an OG Ford Ranger and a Tacoma. I'm surprised you don't like the acceleration on yours. When I test drove them the 4 cylinder Taco felt pretty good, the 4 cylinder Ranger, not so much. I ended up going with a 2wd manual 3.0 Ranger. The Tacos are nice, but there is such a huge premium for them during these covid times that I don't think it's worth it. Not to mention the rust issues.
@Realistick
@Realistick 2 года назад
It depends, if you test drove a 5 lug Tacoma that weighs significantly less than my access cab 4wd 6 lug, it's gonna be a lot more lively. I was also looking at rangers too! I decided against it because I was willing to spend 18k and I got a lot more features and better safety with the tacoma, the rust is killing me though. But I can probably handle it for a grand or so. For 10k though, a ranger is such a better deal than this.
@mckricks1
@mckricks1 2 года назад
@@Realistick I drove a bunch of them. I think part of it comes down to the fact that all these trucks have some age on them now which can make them so different to one another even when comparing the same model. One was a 2012 Taco that felt pretty good. I'm not too familiar with what rev hang is. I didn't really notice that. That was surprising to see in your video, must be a bummer. But maybe I just wasn't driving it hard when testing it. So it takes that long to switch in to 5th? Does it give you some unfavourable situations on the highway if someones close behind you? My Ranger is sluggish to shift if at low rpms, but shifting at higher rpm makes things much quicker and smooth. I read that rev hang happens more with electronic throttle bodies. Looking forward to more of your videos.
@Realistick
@Realistick 2 года назад
@@mckricks1 Part of it will come from that but with the taco in particular, there is a big difference between some of the configurations that it will leave a different impression. And yes, the rev hang only happens when you push in the clutch in 4th or 5th gear at above 55 or so. Toyota programmed it into the 4 cylinder 5 speed model only for some reason? I usually just ignore the revs and shift it because I will literally drop 10 mph depending on the situation if I wait for the revs to drop. They usually program in rev hang to make for smoother shifts but this was quite excessive. Thanks for subscribing!

I might make a video on it at some point since I've gotten a few comments on that but I took an empty (and clean) spray bottle, filled it with just off the shelf rubbing alcohol, popped of the knob, and gently sprayed the area where the knob was (basically inside the head unit), It was still a little weird for a few days but after a week it was working flawlessly and still does after 7 months. I would choose that too if it wasn't so expensive to get into one. Makes it too close to a new one for me to accept the rust potential and lack of some of the newer tech features. I wanted that new one because it was still pretty comfy, honestly, if RU-vid picked up a lot, or if I end up going back into sales for a little.
