You have to change the blower motor resistor chip. That's why the ac won't work in lower settings. It's a really easy and cheap fix, I've had two 2nd Gens and that's a common problem.
Orale. you just gave me an idea of what to do on my a/c that only works on higher #4 and does not want to work on lower speeds. 1.2.3 I will check this tomorrow is happening on my 08 and never really attended till I saw your comment.
Yep, this was happening to my 07 when it was handed down to me. I couldn’t afford to take it to a dealership to fix it so I did it myself and that fix is what drove me towards being a mechanic
Yes, I had a 2006 Tacoma as soon as it hit 200,000 miles the ac only worked on the high speed and looked it up on Tacomaworld and they said the resistor
I own a 2008 SR5 w/ the 2.7L, currently it has 245,000+ miles and still running great. My last truck was a '96 tacoma 4x4 that had 325,000+ miles on it when I wrecked it on some black ice back in 2009. Love these trucks!
I LOVE how absurdly solid these Yotas are. I've got an '03 V8 with 400,000kms on it and it feels like a brand new vehicle. Almost no rust either since it has lived It's life on Vancouver Island! It's nice to see the same care and attention to quality put into their V6 counterparts. I'm interested to see how their new V6 turbos hold up over the years...
@@caseyblakeney3149In the new Tacomas, LC Prado, and I'm assuming 4runner...correct. I was referring to the V6 turbos currently on offer from Toyota in other models though (Tundra, Sequoia, GX)
I just got a 2010 Tacoma, sr5 xtracab for $9000 because the previous older owner was ignorant to the frame replacement and even though he kept the body 100% rust free there was a spot in the frame at the right front cab mount and a shop wouldn't safety it. I inspected the frame top to bottom and found no other holes. I bought it, welded the spot in my driveway and for under 10k I had the truck certified on the road. I've POR15'd the whole frame and rust proofed it. 320,000km too and it runs like a champ! A/C works, 4x4 is a little temperamental but it just needs to be used, I'll take care of that this winter. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO happy with my find. Great video!
320k here as well. 06' offroad w/6 cylinder and its my town truck. fresh oil every 3k miles, does not burn it, automatic trans. my pops passed it down to me on my 18th, im 25 now with a 2 year old and its gonna be his in 16 years. My ol man appreciates how well I maintain it and plan to pass it down another generation
My experience with Tacomas has been very positive but like anything else it all depends on preventive maintenance. It has been my experience that the Engine and drive train are virtually bulletproof but everything else...bearings, U-joints, front ends components, etc are no different than any other vehicle. That can still add up over time.
I had a 2001Tacoma 4X4 that had made it to 483,000 miles. It would have easily survived past 500,000 miles if it had not been totaled on the freeway with a really bad collision.
Went with a new taco because all the used tacos in my area were literally on par in terms of price with the new ones. I shouldn’t have sold my 4runner, but I made 10k driving that thing for 5 years and putting 80k on it. This “era” of yotas are just bulletproof, and I absolutely loved it. 160k on my 06 4runner and zero issues. Didn’t have the V8, but man I miss the immediate low end torque of the 4runner
Greetings from across Lake Erie, 2012 Tacoma V6 165,000 normal 4WD Base Model, 5 speed automatic passes rigid PA truck inspection with new Geolander 10 ply radials, has crossed the entire US 5 times. Everything still works except the driver. Great investment ! My niece bought it used in AZ about 5 years ago. She offered to me and bought a new Tacoma
I have ‘05 taco, just like yours. 213,000 miles. I love it, burns no oil, frame was done ‘16. Best vehicle I ever had. Beats my new Chevys I had no contest !!!
I own an ‘00 4runner with 345k miles currently, I’ve had it for the past ~52k and the reliability is MIND BOGGLING. Yea it has its squeaks and rattles but it’s had a rough life but it’s only left me needing help twice, both times because the battery terminals were too gunked up with mud and dirt.
Just went through the same thing with mine. Took a rough road to a fishing spot. Truck suddenly wouldn’t turn on after being off for a few hours. Popped the hood cleaned the battery posts and terminals and then boom back to driving 😂
Just last week, I gave my son my 2003 Tacoma Prerunner with 197,000 miles on it. There are no leaks and nothing is wrong. I don't live near the ocean or snow, so the frame still looks new. I just needed the space for my next project which is a 2003 4Runner with 201,000 miles.
I have a 92 pickup with a supercharged 3.4. Motor has unknown miles but I'm assuming 200+ based on how rough the motor was, but I abuse it every weekend and it runs like a champ. Never looked back at any other company since.
Still driving my 2000 Tacoma pickup 2.4 liter 4 cyl automatic transmission with 237,000 miles. Body and frame rusty from NYS Road Salt but still runs like a champ, my 4th Toyota truck, also had 3 Toyota cars, been driving them for 40 years since 1983. I drive them until they won't pass NYS Inspection anymore. I'm sure if I lived in a state that doesn't do Inspections some of them would still be running if they hadn't been living in Road Salt a good ⅓ to ½ each year.
I have an 08 TRD Sport with 176k miles. I love the truck but its not without issues. I live in Arizona so luckily rust isn't a big deal here. Instead we have trouble with paint deterioration from the sun. It's probably the most expensive issue with the truck right now. I have also lost my cruise control. I know there are common problems with the switch and the clock spring that cause this but in my case I think it's the actual module under the hood and not easy to fix. I also have problems with my blower motor. Thats a resistor under the glove box. My understanding is that is caused by the gauge of the wires running to it being too small, they get fried and turn black from too much power trying to go through them. Surprised Toyota never recalled that as a fire hazard... My tire pressure sensors are also out. I just finished installing new brake pads and rotors, huge difference! In the middle of upgrading the suspension at the moment and adding a 2" lift, super stoked for that. I'm getting some leakage from the steering rack so expecting that I'll need to get that replaced at some point. Keep and eye on the drive shaft, I ended up having to rebuild mine, the u-joints and carrier bearing were toast and knocking around like crazy. Luckily it didn't damage the transmission or differential seals. I'm hoping that I can put a little bit of TLC into it and keep it on the road for another 175k. Keeping my fingers crossed that things like the AC, ABS breaking system and heater core don't fail, repairs that big might signify that it's time to quit fixing it and buy a new truck.
Mine is a 2006 Tacoma work truck, 2.7L RWD 5 speed manual transmission. Got 213,000+ on the odometer, but doesn't burn any oil between oil changes. No rust at all, I sprayed the frame and the underbody with cosmoline (works wonders on the salty roads in Michigan).
I like the ride-along type of video with the headcam. The flashing AC light may be the clutch relay in the under-hood fuse box. That's a common issue with Toyotas from what I've read. An aftermarket relay may resolve that issue. I have a 2014 Tacoma Access Cab with 31K miles and mine does that occasionally. Turning it off and back on again usually solves the problem for a while. I don't know if the relay can be disassembled and the contacts cleaned with a small file. Thanks for the video.
I have a 2007 Tacoma, TRD 4x4, crew cab. 150K miles. Replaced calipers, drums. I love my Truck. First Tacoma, 99 TRD, ext cab., 4x4. 259K miles. Been driving Tacoma's forever. Would never consider anything else. Have never been stranded!! Trust my truck to get me there and back without any doubts. Take car of your Tacoma and it will take care of you. A promise no other brand can make. Got a emergency call at 2am (no B.S.) Got in my truck and drove from Texas to Nebraska. Fear, nor doubts. Never entered my mind. I knew I was in good hands.
I just bought an 06 sr5 v6 4x4 with 301,000KM chassis was replaced and pretty much everything else! I got it for 5 grand. In terms of rust it just needs a soft spot fixed on the passenger rocker. I'm shocked at how little rust it has! I'm in newfoundland Canada so I was expecting more. I can't wait to do the fun little upgrades. Took me 2 years to find one that wasn't beat to hell.
@@tyleredwards6489hey that’s not bad man. I’m looking at buying the same exact truck with 145,000 miles for 12 thousand USD. It’s gonna be my first Tacoma but I’m looking forward to it.
Just bought a Tacoma a couple weeks ago with a hard hard misfire and a horrible shake from the torque converter clutch lock up issue. I got it with 402,000 miles got the transmission to a manageable spot for now and replaced the plugs and one coil. Still need to do a lot of smaller jobs on the truck. The driver was bragging that at 402K they'd never done anything more than batteries, brakes, oil changes, belts just basic stuff. I'm amazed at how well the truck drives with this sort of mileage and I paid only $200 since it almost certainly needs a transmission and I wasn't sure how bad the engine would be. I have multiple vehicles so I think I'm going to keep this one as an around town vehicle but I'm amazed at how tough this truck is.
My 2nd gen '12 Tacoma has 180,000 miles. The only repair necessary has been to replace the drive shaft carrier bearing (u-joints replaced at that time, but were still tight). So only tires, battery and the rubber in the carrier bearing. Rust isn't normally a problem in south-central US. Best small 4X4 truck ever.
I have 150k miles on my 07 and it didn’t get the frame replaced because it’s lived in Florida it’s whole life. No road salt and I hose it down meticulously whenever we go fishing or camping so nothing builds up.
My 06 will be hitting 200k roughly a year from now, projected January 2024 Mine was also a former work truck but in pretty good shape. Love these things.
My 2006 TRD Sport 4x4 has 330,000 + on it and only thing I've had to do is the cat converter.....cost me $715. I do keep it up and have the oil changed religiously.
I’m actually in the same position now… I need to deal with my cat… was hoping it was only the sensors… I have maybe… 223k miles on it… throwin me the bank 1 code… easy fix?
Over 200,000 miles on my 2011 Tacoma double cab. I've used and abused her, but I really haven't experienced much difference from the day I first bought her. I do change my oil every 3,000-5,000 miles. Other than that, I've only had to replace batteries, tires, turning signal bulbs, and one blower motor.
202000 on my 2009 4wd 6mt. It drives like it's brand new. Granted I preventatively replaced every single consumable maintenance item on it along with all the fluids.
2010 trd sport 4x4 in Texas. Currently 224k in the truck. Just spent over $6k to get an engine light off but it’s still on. It was mostly neglect. All new front end, needed a computer because the harness sleeve had deteriorated and shorted out 2 banks. I’ll drive this truck til it’s last mile. It’s a little truck so no thrills but it’s never got me stuck. I’m a convert and I think my next truck may be a tundra. I’d welcome the v8.
I just bought a 2010 Toyota Tacoma Prerunner Crew cab a few days ago. Any way to see if the frame was replaced from the recall??? How can I tell if it's been replaced from the recall? If mine hasn't been replaced I'd like to have that done. It looks rusted in some spots but it may have been painted idk.
Call up your local Toyota dealership and have them run the VIN. They should have some kind of record no matter where it was done if it was done at a Toyota dealership
They replaced the frame on my 2003 along with sparetire mount, rear springs, E brake cables and the 2008 I replaced the 2003 with has the same new things on it. 222555 miles. Went thru the spare tire psi thing and replaced the tire in the rack where I can get to the valve without removing the tire. Jus sayin'
My 07 4.0l has 209k miles i bought it with 165k. Just had to do basic oil changes on it since i got it. The reason i bought mine was because i had a co worker with a 05 that had 365k miles on it and he drove that thing to work every day. His had a bad oil leak coming from the pan and the valve covers. Ive been told as long as you keep up with basic fluid changes and do the timing belt when it needs it you should he fine for a long time.
RE; the A/C it's the schrader valves. Have them replace the a/c line schrader valves. If you have a cabin air filter in there, it stops the flow JUST enough to disallow the fan. (I have an 05).
The acceleration hesitation may be due to a dying fuel pump; I replaced mine because my Tacoma would basically stutter when accelerating onto the freeway. Easy fix. Removed the fuel tank in about four minutes. Just make sure the tank is empty before starting… File pumps are cooled by the fuel in the tank; knowing this I try not to let the fuel go below 1/4 tank. Pump was about $150 CAN
Good little video hey but if you're on the west coast California or Arizona you don't have to worry about rust on your 2004 or earlier Toyota Tacoma it's only if you're in a wet state
Great channel with information I was looking for (I'm subscribed) as I am looking to buy a 2008 4Runner. Question: I keep hearing about Automatic Transmission problems (True or False?) Also, how do you beef up the transmission? And, what are the best suspension upgrades without causing issues?
Thanks for subscribing! The 4runner transmissions are really strong as long as they aren't neglected or mistreated. No need to worry about beefing it up. Make sure to do a gentle fluid exchange instead of a high pressure flush if you decide to change the fluid. As for suspension upgrades, this article might be helpful: canadiangearhead.com/lifting-your-toyota-4runner/
@@CanadianGearhead Thank you for replying and I look forward to all future shows! I just read your suggestion above and frankly you and I have similar goals. I am ALL ABOUT PERFORMANCE and CAPABILITY not looks (we may differ there). You see, I used to work at a shop that built Off-Road rigs for MOAB (everything from camping to rock crawling) but they were all Dodge, Ford and Chevy vehicles so Toyota is new to me. In my case, I am not looking to build a rig for rock crawling I am however looking to build an ADVENTURE / OVERLANDER rig capable of moderate off-roading while pulling a small trailer not to exceed 2,500 pounds. Any and all advice is welcome. Thanks again!
I have a 2010 4X4 Sport. At 200K (miles) I needed alternator, tensioner, idler pulleys, belt. Stupid me never greased my drive shaft U-joints so I had to rebuild the drive shaft. CV boots ripped and they were replaced. I've done all the scheduled maintenance including transmission flush every 50K. The clear coat on the hood by the hood scoop is starting to fail despite good car care and frequent waxing. But other than that there has been no unscheduled maintenance or problems. I hope it lasts another 10 years because I don't like any new pickup trucks on the market, not even new Tacomas. Well of course I'm leaving out $100,000 pick up trucks like the Ford Shelby....
The blower for the A/C was my resistor, replaced it for like $20 on Amazon and replaced myself with a RU-vid video! Located under the glove box. Tight quarters if you can have someone small help you lol
I found a tundra 2007 with 330,000 miles on it I was going to buy the other day truck was mint 4 door but I was too late I never let high miles on a Toyota scare me
You need new spark plugs and throttle body cleaning. I have a 2010 Prerunner with 102k miles. Runs smooth. I've changed ALL fluids and hopefully good for another smooth 100k.
I've been much happier with a manual transmission the truck is quite heavy but I have a four cylinder engine and one of the biggest complaints this generation experienced even with the 6 cyl was gear searching I can imagine that would take alot of the response out of any size engine people will ask me about my four being a dog but I've been very satisfied I keep the granny in a lower gear for and extra few second just enough to build up that extra bit of power for merging on the highway or passing another veicle without that frustration of waiting for the computer to get the proper gear for the engine speed.
Meanwhile my 22 work Frontier has squeaks and rattles in the interior coming from pretty much everywhere with only 6,000 miles. The only thing I like is the engine, miss my 13’ Tacoma V6.
I had 240 on my FJ same motor and it ran and shifted better then the rental equinox that had 22k on it the rental place gave me.truck still had power and shifted smooth as new a d underneath was mint for an 07.came from Indiana which was shocking considered in Ohio 1 state over trucks are rusty as hell
Good luck because my 06 just had a massive oil leak which= about 7 grand for a new rebuilt engine. I couldn't afford it or the risk that another major repair was coming up so I had to scrap it. It only had 249,000 miles so yours should be coming up soon as well. I don't believe that rumour that toyotas last forever anymore.
@160,000 miles change your lower control arms, struts and shocks, tire rods out, sway bar bushings cheap and easy. Change with OEM save up for and work extra hours to buy them. Base model Tacomas have very bad front suspensions ball joint failures happens all the time. Wheels fall off easy due to ball joints PLEASE change @ 150,000 before the issues start. They rust underneath very easy always pressure wash underneath especially if you live up north. Seen countless of frames breaking between bed and cab. Truck is dependable always cranks up! Take care of her by changing minor parts and she will last you at least 400,000 plus miles. You will get tired of this truck because it’s so dependable you will want to keep it but get an upgrade.
i got a white one with 18k miles 2012 regular cab back in 2019 as my first vehicle. It was a work truck and my grandma was kind enough to give it to me upon getting my drivers license. it was already paid for and I got it for free so what more can i ask for? I don't like that it is white.. it reminds me of people who cut grass or plumbers. not that that's a bad thing but you get my point. I want to change it to spruce green and change the headlights. my first mods! anyway, it is a great truck and i got really really lucky.
Bought an 06 SR5 yesterday with 184k on it in st catharines. Just on the qew/403/hwy6 so far but runs sootm just things feel a little stiff. planning to get the peddle commander. Apparently its must have with the laggy throttle response of the tacomas.
@@melgonza1012Prices are sky high on Toyota trucks because of their reliability and reputation for going multiple 100,000's of miles. My 85 had 4 owners after I traded it, had 460,000+ miles on it when the owner snapped the frame hauling a full load of firewood out of the woods. NYS Salt had ate up the frame, but it was still running good. Not bad for a 4 cyl engine and manual transmission!😅
i bought a used 2011 trd 4wd tacoma and i have had nothing but problems with it since i bought it 4 months ago. two timing chains broke, a missing actuator, and a fuel pump go out on me. trying to decide if it’s just a bad nut and trade it in for a different tacoma
I bought a 2018 SR5 4x4 with 29k on it. Got 75k now just replaced torque converter and cat. Luckily I had extended warranty, would have been around 5 grand if not. Anything else happens and I’m cutting my loses. I’ve had 7 Tacomas and never had an issue til now.
I bought an extended cab 2011 SR5 4 cylinder with 20 K miles in 2012. I now have 106 K and it runs well. I’ve hauled a lot of wood for my wood burner over the years and other miscellaneous hauling and one leaf spring broke 3 years ago. I had it replaced for about 300 bucks and everything else is original including the exhaust system. I had a Ford Ranger for 11 years before this Tacoma and it rusted out. Almost no rust on this Tacoma. It is hands down the best vehicle I ever had and I hope it outlasts me.
My friend's 09 4WD is doing the same thing. It's very intermittent when it comes to engaging to 4x4 and when it does, it doesn't wanna disengage unless you turn the knob to 2WD and turn the engine off then back on. It has about 110k miles. Any thoughts? 🙃
@@CanadianGearhead my 2008 double cab has frame done before I bought it ...the frame bolts to the bed are all off I had to take one off so I could push the bed to one side as one of the tires sticks out more than the other ...it looks like who ever changed out the frame must of got it from Mexico and they put the holes for the bolts a little off where they should be ..frame made in Mexico terrible
For an 06, it looks like ur doing pretty good! The 08s and 10s are pretty indestructable. They got it a little wrong with the 09 for whatever reason tho
The only thing i don’t like about these is the styling. 1st gen and 3rd look good. These don’t look bad, but they just look like a weird mix of modern and old styling. Slightly off. Good trucks though.
I just bought a 2007 with 222,000 miles on it. 2.7 Prerunner with a 5 speed. I changed a few things like a front wheel bearing, front rotors, front sway bar links. It sure has a lot of power for a 4 cylinder. It can roll 80 mph all day, like it's nothing. Very impressed so far.
Lol 200k mile my brother in-law's father kept his untill 300+k miles on it also rust is really only a problem for people outside california and below rust belt
