Diesels are finally here, sort of. Now that we have the low-sulfur fuel, manufacturers have responded with vehicles that even the great state of California will allow on its hallowed highways.

I'm stunned. If you bought a VW TDi....even 3 years ago, it was quite noisy, but these new ones are so quiet, it's incredible.

The V10 was nice but put the Touareg in the $75,000 range. The V6 application works very well. A fully loaded TDI Touareg is in mid-50's here. Quite a savings over the V10 and much more reasonable as a daily driver.

Fuel economy, high levels of torque - much higher than gasoline engines, most of the power available at low rpm, very quiet (new ones). In other words they're good for highway cruising.

Very nice control for that height and weight. I have the V6, not a bullet but plenty of power. You can afford all the situations with this car. Big interiors for you family and stuff, great AC. Fuel consumption is high but the performance balance is good.

Diesels are not bad..... they KICK ASS :D Having 200hp from a 2.0 and averaging 6l/100km=WIN.

I think you need to listen closely in this video. #no noise# 3ltr and the 5ltr tdi can be mistaken for a petrol car, very quite. The only noise you hear is the turbo spooling and the sound of the petrol car behind over-revving trying to keep up. #Diesel Power#

@DualofChaos
@DualofChaos 14 лет назад
Not bad. Its less than half a second slower than the V8. And its not too expensive, it can be yours for about $42 grand. A diesel is fine in an SUV like this, but those people saying that it should be in every type of car are mistaken.

for your driving style, a diesel would suit you best. diesels are durable and brawny, suited to highway driving. like the bmw 335d. gets 36 mpg on the highway, yet goes from 0-60 in 6 seconds.

@junglist1soldier Check your facts bud, the diesel engine was invented by Rudolf Diesel in the late 1890's. Then engine was originally run on Peanut oil, not our current diesel fuel.

Yes, and it's a real damn shame. A friend of mine had one of these old Mercedes' for a few years, damn thing seemed indestructible. The new diesels are quite durable, too. There's no way they will last 3,000,000 km's, but if used properly, they can serve you for a long, long time ;)

This thing weights almost 2,5 tons... so for it's size the performance is sweet. I own a Dodge Caliber 2.0 TDI(european version with a german engine), 1500 kilos, 185HP(!!!!), 0-60 in less than 8 secs, and averages 6l/100 km(less than fucking hybrids!) When you compare this to the retarded prehistoric engines USA is producing, these figures are like from Star Trek. Sad, but true...
@leodevil240mph
@leodevil240mph 13 лет назад
@Airox2009 There are two things that can make even the worst quality turbo work for life. Allow the engine to idle before and after moving and use a good quality fully synthetic engine oil. Apart from that there is absolutely no problem with diesel engines. You get all the power, torque with the fuel economy. Reliability is not an issue with the modern diesel engines. Trust me, i have a lot of experience :-)

@vdubmahn The v8 TDI is more powerful, faster, lighter, and more efficient than the v10, why keep it?
@coolerdude44

the ford gt is hardly american. steering came from the aston martin vanquish, the gearbox was german, the suspension and chassis was developed by lotus, and the brakes and wheels were italian. and the viper acr's chassis is german as well.

besides the fact that the v10 would be Much heavier and more sluggish in the higher end, which diesel engines dont have much of anyway.

In my country a diesel is cheap to turn coz diesel here is far cheaper than gasoline... besides the diesel tdis sound better
@sspope
@sspope 15 лет назад
I didn't say that. I'm just saying that cars like good ol' Mercedes with diesels lasting 3,000,000 kilometers aren't built anymore.
@C_R_O_M________
@C_R_O_M________ 6 лет назад
Londo Mollari if you improve performance dramatically, which they did, it's only natural that reliability will suffer. The good ol'Mercedes diesel had less than a third of todays diesel's HP figures and of course less torque as well.
@Lieburner
@Lieburner 15 лет назад
Sure, the gasoline engine rather than the physical limit to exceed the 5500 or 6000rpm as have the diesel. Only the diesel engine built by Ricardo Engineering for the 24h LeMans can overcome this natural limit. But was a experimental racing engine 6.0 Lt V10 40v Twin Turbo piezo injectors 600/700bhp At 6500rpm and this engine haved never won a race.Only the V12 TDI installed in the Audi R10 haved won in all the world.

Diesel engines will soon take out gasoline engines, as they should have in the beginning. They last longer, less maintenance, & now, they're cleaner, & more efficient. Thanks to Mercedes Benz for inventing the Diesel Engine! I'll be buying my first Brand new Vehicle, which will for sure be a Turbo Diesel.The GTI is QUICK!My first choice is the ML420 or 320 Bluetec, 2nd is VW.I should have test drove this model.Got to go drive it for sure now.BIODIESEL is the FUTURE FUEL!

@56KbModem
@56KbModem 15 лет назад
a 335d is very small? dude,what the hell? do you drive with your entire furniture to work? why the hell would you need a 7 meter long v8 truck to drive to work? I've been to the states several times,and i saw housewives drive their HUMMERS to work. Diesels are the best engines in the world when it comes to long highway driving. On the highway,driving at 150 km/h my 2.0 TDI averages 4-5l/100 km. And,for some odd reason,if you didn't notice, european cars despite being smaller,are more spacious.
