Has Our VW Touareg Been a Disaster & Should You Buy One? Touareg Expert Buyer's Guide! 

I have had a 06' V10 TDI. Ive replaced just about everything on the engine. Turbos, exhaust manifolds, cams and lifters, tandem pump, etc. Yes it was expensive. However, theres alot of bad information on the internet by people who have never owned one saying you need to pull the engine to service anything is flat out wrong. I myself (have no mechanical background) changed the alternator in my driveway in about 6 hours. My mechanic i use for more complicated procedures changed the cams and lifters with the engine installed as well, but if you only have the dealership they will always go by the repair manual procedure which always starts at step 1: Remove engine transmission subfram assembly. I have tuned it and deleted the egr, dpf, and cats running a striaght turbo back exhaust. Upgraded from a 5v to 7v glow plug system. The car is now fully sorted and is an absolutely beast to drive. These videos dont do the Touaregs offroad capabilities justice. I use mine offroad everyday on muddy hilly pipeline right of ways and I can go anywhere I need too. The v10 is a league above the v8 in offroad capability for the simple fact that now that its tuned I have about 605ft/lbs of torque available just off of idle which is almost 2x as much as the V8, but it comes at 2x the cost. If you can fork out a couple grand for important services and can DIY on this vehicle buy the V10. For a 14 year old vehicle I enjoy driving it just as much as my RS3. Plus the heads it turns when you drive by people with the sound of a loud diesel idling in a midsize SUV will never cease to put a smirk on my face. PS tuned im getting about 24-26mpg fuel economy. If you have any questions about a V10 I know just about all there is to know feel free to ask.

I recommend V8 Steel suspensions Touaregs for most people. While the air ride system wasn't known for being exceptionally problematic, the cost to fix any failure will be more than most people can stomach. It really just depends on if the ground clearance you get from Air ride is a must. As far as the V10 TDI, that engine can putting a serious punishing on your bank account!

Well done. Very clear. You make it look attractive if an owner has a good relationship with a good mechanic and plans 2k - 5k per year for maintenance and extra fuel costs.

Always love these mini series you guys do with the Touareg. Kind of funny that morning before running into Nathan and Andre at the Off-Grid Expo in Boulder I just picked up my Touareg. Love it to bits and couldnt be more happy with the purchase.

Original T1 V8 owner since 2005 ...... There is a reason why Volkswagen dominated Dakar and so many more Awards ..... Hands down the Best SUV 💪 I’ve got 147,000 on the Clock, 14 years of Tahoe Snowboarding. Not to mention pulling trailers, hauling people around in pure Luxury. I get looks every where I drive because it is so well respected 😝 I would part with it for the all New Touareg but sadly the decision to bring it back to the North American Market has not been made 😫 You buy a Cayenne for speed ..... You Own a Touareg for everything else. 💪

Great review, very informative and detailed description of your 1st generation Touareg. I'm the 2nd owner of a 2006 Cayenne Turbo S with all the off road features as you described, air suspension, centre lock and locking differential. After watching your video I took mine off-road on a forestry road and a 4,000ft elevation gain over 16 miles. It climbed great even in normal mode through 4 to 6 inches of fresh snow fall (winter tires). Prior to this car I had an 06 GX470 was a get vehicle too but this Porsche is much more enjoyable to drive, 520hp 530 ft lbs. Maintenance and fuel is a cost factor of ownership over the Lexus, the only major repair I've had to do over the 8 years of ownership is the coolant pipes. My 2012 purchase cost was

Tommy's take on this vehicle is very spot on, though the T2 had many many upgrades and improvements over the T1. In my opinion it is the one to buy if you are in the market. I recently sold my 2008 V10 with air suspension and rear diff lock. I was the second owner, bought it with 5k miles on it. Never had an issue with the air suspension. I put on about 125k miles on it and replaced the power steering twice, two drive shafts, lots of oil leak repairs, countless tire replacements and various other nagging issues. Failure to diagnose and fix electronic issues finally drained me of my willingness to spend any more money on repairs. Having said that, I still miss it. LOL. Ive owned many different vehicles and this one was by far my favorite. Great review. I've been following Tommy's reports on this vehicle and I think he's done a really accurate job describing the attributes and weaknesses of this this vehicle.

Great review Tommy and I owned a 07 Touareg v6 bought it used from a dealer with 65,000 miles and good thing it came with a warranty- was a gas hog - up in the Denver mountains had a hard time getting over 60 mph - drive shaft blew at 80,000 - cost 1,400 - they had to replace the timing chains at 70,000 miles - but I did like the truck :)

About the same time you started putting these Touareg videos out, I bought a 2007 with the updated 350hp 4.2 V8, only 67k miles. Steel springs and no rear locker, some slightly upsized Cooper Discoverer 265/60s, no 4-seat climate or cool roof bars, but a backup camera and the same teak interior... and it’s not a golf ball. I gotta say, the thing is nigh unstoppable. Perfect for surprising the group of Jeeps gathered at the top of a hairy incline. Just had it on the Mount Baldy/Mount Rosa/Almagre Mountain/whatever it’s called loop near Colorado Springs. Snow above 10k feet. Got to 11,300 no problem, and after Pike’s Peak was closed at 11,000. I did have to throw chains on the descent back to gravel after a few puckers with the hill descent control. Then I bombed it to Albuquerque the same day at 80-85 in quiet comfort. LOVE this truck but yes, it sucks on gas (I was STOKED at 16.5mpg on that ABQ run), has 2 engine air filters and takes 9.5qts of oil. Those air suspensions are $1500 in parts alone PER CORNER if they fail. I haven’t seen a need for it yet and there are 2-inch lift spacers available for a couple hundy. Got-dang juggernaut.

Tommy, your analysis is spot on. I wish you had done this video back in early 2015 -- it could have saved me a fortune in building out my current "hunting and fishing station wagon" which replaced my old (and very worn out ) 2004 Chevy Tahoe Z71 4x4, which I miss dearly. I now drive as my "off road in northern Michigan vehicle," a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 4x4 EcoDiesel with Offroad II package. It includes the air suspension and Quadra-Drive II system. I had to order this thing from the factory, because no dealer in the US had one on the lot -- and besides, I wanted the two-tone beige and brown interior, which looks fabulous. It arrived with the wrong tires -- Michelin "all-seasons" which I immediately swapped out for some marginal Michelin "all-terrains" at my local Discount Tire store (but those sucked, too). I am currently running Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs _-- same tires I ran twice on my old Tahoe -- they're fabulous in northern Michigan. In addition to the factory skid plate package I have installed "factory" Mopar rock sliders and numerous extra bash plates sourced from Chief Products, in Australia, which specializes in WK2 Jeep Grand Cherokees, and I installed special Yakima Roof Racks for my canoe. After the $3,075 EcoDiesel Class Action settlement check that I received from FCA last month, I have about $50,000.00 "all-in" for my build. My Jeep's build is just about identical so far as I can tell (except for my Jeep's diesel engine, rock rails and extra skid plates) to your budget Toureg V8 with center and rear locking difs. My Jeep's center dif locks up in 4 low, and the ELSD rear dif actually locks up in 4 low when in "Mud" or "Rock" mode. I typically run in "Mud" mode where I travel off road in northern Michigan. Being able to air up the tires on the Toureg direct from the air suspension compressor is a pretty trick feature -- I'd love to have that on my Jeep. I carry a cheap 12 volt "cigarette lighter plug" air compressor in my Jeep, and I have a shop air compressor back at my Cabin -- which I usually use -- for when I need to air up the tires for travel back on the highway. Although my Jeep's mpgs are probably much better than your Toureg's with its gas V8 (and premium gas, which is usually much more expensive than diesel here in Michigan) I get nowhere near the EPA estimates with my diesel. I think I should have gotten the FCA 5.7 liter gas V8 instead of the V6 EcoDiesel. Again, your "used earlier 2000's" 1st gen V8 gas Toureg with air suspension and front and rear locking difs seems to be exactly what I actually needed, had I only known, and it would have involed far less of an up front cost for me. Do you have a comparison of interior volumes/capacities between a WK2 Jeep GC and a 1st gen Toureg? I passed on the Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon, because its interior volume was too small. Even with my Jeep GC, I really do miss the capacity of my old 2004 Chevy Tahoe. Thanks again for the great video! I love the interior. It’s absolutely beautiful. It really reminds me a lot of my ‘15 ML350 Benz. The ML is pretty heavy at 4,650 and easily weighs 5k with me inside and a full tank of gas. The 3.5L V6 is awesome and has plenty of power. The 7 speed is geared perfectly also. I do get much better mpg though. Probably 20-21 combined. The VW almost makes the Benz look behind its time. I would definitely pay $4,600 for that tank you guys got. Great 👍 purchase!!

I have the exact Touareg in dark blue that I purchased at the end of summer. Everything he said is spot on. Maintenance is pricey but all around phenomenal vehicle. Tommy please show some videos of performance upgrades for the V-8. So hard to find good info and mods for the naturally aspirated 4.2 L.

I have had my T1 2006 Touareg V8 for about 10 years now. I absolutely love the car!! Mine came with TV's on the headrest which I am not sure if it was installed aftermarket or not. Problems I had in the years I have owned it are pretty scary but not enough for me to think this car is trash or not worth my money. Had the gas gasket leak before the recall happened. Drive shaft middle support bearing gave out that scared me, I thought it was my motor mounts when I would gas it and everything would start shaking. (fixed it myself with aftermarket part by a company named Vortex) I have 2 12'inch subs in my trunk that took forever to figure out the wiring for the car lmfao.. oh and the worst thing was my steering column gave out and that cost me 2500$ but again still not complaining. 10 years and cost me maybe 3500$ in maintenance. Still Driving it with 125,000 miles on it. (also I am armenian so you should know i drive like a maniac xD)

Great review and wise advice. I really wanted a T1 V8 w/Nav model for everyday driver, searched for years for the right deal but always chickened out at the potential costs to own/fix.

I hear you about the V10. However, I just acquired a 2006 that recently had a engine out rebuild, and so far, so good with only 1 small exception. The torque is unreal. The highway comfort is beautiful. And the flowmaster exhaust the previous owner put in just sounds mean.

Love my 07 Touareg . Now got 139000 miles on it . Owned it for 9 months now and still love it . Had the opportunity to off road it before we went into lockdown in the uk . Not much seems to stop it . Comfort is the best I've experienced in any car I've owned . As I'm 58 I've gone through a lot of cars . Only issue is Aircon needs a service . My car is black so a bit of a killer on hot days 34 c where I live today . The 3.0 V6 tdi engine is sweet and got plenty of power . Towing is easy too . Great reviews

Had an 05 in the same color both interior and exterior. Watching these videos has me wishing we didn't get rid of it. We had all the normal problems with it that they are known for, but it was amazing! Also, to note...mine had the rear diff. lock but no air suspension. Would have been nice, but they did make them in the US that way.

Nice, I have the 4.2 and rear lockers on my 130k mile VW... its been pricey to maintain, but worth it... 14 mpg is my standard for long trips

I have a 2010 Touareg TDI that I bought, in part, through the influence of your videos. I almost bought a 2005 back in 2004, but I balked at the $50,000 price. Fifteen years later, I picked up the 2010 for $8900. It has 152000 miles, but came with a 4 year 48000 mile warranty on the engine, it has the air suspension, but no rear locker. As I am intending only light off-reading in it (my wife doesn’t tolerate all that bouncing around!), I was okay with that. Anyway, your videos brought it back to mind and I remembered how impressed I was with them at the time. So, for a second vehicle used for light back country trail running, I’m pretty content with it. I wish I had the rear diff locker, but I expect I wouldn’t use it that much, even though it would be reassuring to have it.

This may seem like an outrageous suggestion, but have you ever considered Gathering the staff together to round up a variety of different off-road worthy vehicles and potentially running a 250 Mile Stretch of the Baja 1000 course? Or perhaps a 500 Mile Stretch? I really do think that would make quite the Epic multi video mini series if you guys were able to somehow do that

Great review you forgot to mention that in 2007 they T1 came with a V8 FSI which is timing-chain driven instead of timing belt like the 04-06 models and uses direct fuel injection. Also horsepower was up to 350hp or so. Fuel consumption still sucked though. I own one with only 78k on the odometer. I agree with the fact that you have to be open to concept that they are more expensive to maintain. If you can do most of the maintenance yourself you will save a lot of money. As for overall capability, the car is just amazing. I have towed up to 10,800 lbs with it and the chassis handled it just fine. One of the neatest things about the air suspension is that besides increasing the off-road capability it also self levels when you tow. Therefore, the back never squats down and it makes for a totally different more relaxed towing experience. As a future car to review on the channel I would be curious to see the Land Rover Discovery LR3 with air suspension. It would be cool to see how it handles the same off road trails you devoured with the Touareg. The LR3 and LR4s are also very over built and over designed vehicles with essentially two frames. A full frame on the bottom with a heck of a thick gage steel and then a unibody chassy essentially bolted on the full frame. I own the diesel version of thae LR3 back in Europe and between the T1 and the LR3 I think the LR3 gives a more compliant ride and towing experience however handling and highway cruising is superior in the Touareg. I adore my '05 V6 Touareg! My mechanic raved about what an incredible vehicle it is, and is looking to purchase one for his wife. It has become the perfect farm vehicle, after the loss of my Mazda CX5. Touareg well be the only vehicle I'll own from here on out, besides my '68 convertible air cooled!

I just bought a 2010 Touareg with the V6 diesel and the air suspension. I didn’t get the rear differential locker, but I’m not looking for amazing off road capability. I just want to be able to go into the back country more than I can with a typical suv. It has 152,000 miles on it, but comes with a 4yr/48,000 mile warranty on the engine from Volkswagen, due to the diesel emissions fiasco. I paid $8900 for it, which seems like a good deal. I’m considering buying an extended warranty to cover the transmission and air suspension. I’m upgrading the brakes, and I’m going to get a tune that should bump it to about 275 hp and 485 lb/ft of torque. I’m fitting the OEM 19” wheels with Continental TerrainContact 255/55R-19s today. It’s a little surprising how few brands make all terrain tires in a 19” size. All in all, I’m pretty excited about it! Time will tell if I made a good decision or bad, I guess!

i got a use 2006 with V6 with rear lockers and the air suspension and it lived all it life in Colorado

I owned an ‘05 4.2L w/air ride, rear locker & NAV as well. Same teak leather & exterior color. Loved it until someone hit me and insurance totaled it. A couple weeks prior spent the $2K for the timing belt/water pump, etc. on the 80K service. Brembo 6 piston brakes aren’t cheap either but I really miss it & would own one again. Thanks for the spot on video.

I purchased a 2006 V6 Touareg from Copart in 2021. The bumper cover was partly pulled back and some scuffs on the rear quarter. $2400. Soon after I got it, it wouldn’t switch into 4WD Low and I can’t communicate to the canbus. It is smooth, quiet and comfortable on the road. I’ve used it to tow a boat and other Copart purchases with no problem. I’m sure I’ll get 4WD issue sorted out so I’m pleased with the purchase.

Awesome Cars!! My dad has one in Argentina, South America and goes all over with it. Satellite GPS and make your own way, Amazing Capabilities. yes, some issues here and there but with proper maintenance quite acceptable considering what you can do off road and then just go on the highway, lower the suspension and you can do 115 mph all day long.... Good video, Tommy, really. I would like to see more towing video with your Touareg, maybe some nice travel and some review on the snow.

I’ve got my T3 and stock it was really good off-road, I plan to put 2” taller tires on it and a 2” lift. Works really well for truck things.

Do show and keep a list of the maintenance required, for each of the vehicles you guys buy. Would be helpful for us viewers to know which cars to buy or not and what to expect might go wrong with the vehicles.

So, just a note, on the V10 TDI, the alternator is under the intake manifolds and EGR cooler. It come out through the top. No need to drop the subframe. Cost was spot on though, $3000ish.

I purchased myTaureg 2013 and since then I am in love with this car it’s a TDI and it’s great very comfortable very reliable heavy on the roads no slippering no fishtail it’s a great great car.And I hate to see this car off the market in the US because I will buy it another one if I could 😢

I think the V6 Diesel is also a very good option. Available in the land of Metric. On average fuel economy is 11km/l

Great video Tommy!!, here in Chile we get a SECOND gen air suspension V8TDI with 590 lb-ft of torque, that's even more powerfull that the controversial V10. I'll try to get my hands on one and report back the differences.

Just bought an '04 TDi V10 from the original owner in Northern CA. Loving it at 145k miles.

My MK1 3.0 V6 diesel will easily get 30 mpg on a run (approx 25 US mpg), with highs of 35mpg when taking it steady. Great series on the Touareg. Really enjoyed seeing what it’s capable of on the rough stuff!

Cool video, really enjoying this series. Myself I also have a Touareg and supper happy with it. One thing though - looks like you guys have those roof bars mounded in the wrong direction ;)

I liked my diesel Touareg so much that upon returning it to VW because of the diesel gate I bought a 2017 brand new gasoline version.

I got a 07 V6 with lower mileage for $2k only issue was the transmission had a wiring issue turned out to be a actual $10 fix and I have a perfect mint condition Touareg I absolutely love it!! Highly recommend it for snowy climates 👍

I live in the mountains & I own the 2007 3.6L V6 Volkswagen Touareg & I didn't realize that this car was any good offroading but I saw a video of the vehicle offroading so I took it offroading in the winter & I was surprised how well that vehicle operates in an offroading setting. I take mine offroading a few times a month now.

I went from a rear wheel drive Ford Edge to a 2006 toureg and I absolutely love this car. Baring the insane dealership prices I had to pay for a repair. I’ve had no problems with this car. My advise would be avoid taking it to dealerships, your wallet will thank you.

well done Tommy, the Touareg shares lots of parts with Porsche and Audi (Bentley...) so parts are not hard to come by. btw I have the V10, yes its freaking awesome. when the wife drives it 11L/100km (21 MPG US)

Great video but incorrect statement regarding the V10 alternator. I changed myself and it’s not an engine out job as it sits right at the top rear of the engine in the middle of the V. After 6 years of very little trouble i can highly recommend going for the V10 tdi. You will never get bored of that torque.

Tommy you need to get an F-150 shorty with the rear locker and do this type of review.

Got caught in a blizzard in a 2004 Touareg last winter. Cars were getting stuck but not this. Even while going up an incline in snow.

Just picked myself up a cheap 06 3.2V6 petrol on springs here in NZ. Agree that the engine is a bit underpowered for weight of car (wish it was the later 3.6 V6) but it still gets the job done, and should hopefully be a reliable unit.

Very happy with my 05 Treg. It's the V8 with air and rear diff just like the Tough T (except in better condition) with 110,000 miles. Might look at selling it in a few months if anyone from Toronto is interested.

Not true. My V6 has steel suspension and a rear locker. I’ve loved my Reg since he rolled off the truck. First weekend we took it to Sedona and there’s STILL red dirt i’m washing out 15 years later .

Thanks for a very clear 4x4 focussed review. A quick look on a Spanish 2nd hand site and there are a lot for sale, especially v10 diesels. I was able to see 3 with the air suspension option, but none had rear differential lock 🔐 😕 could be one or none in a hundred ... looking at the high mileage on these and the associated running costs, unless you have a big maintenance budget, these cars are best avoided.

@10:12 Even better, I have found a VR6 Touareg 1 with air suspension and manual transmission in the land of the Volkswagen. That is extremely rare. Most manual Touareg 1 are inline 5 turbodiesel. :)

Have a VR6. Totally want the diesel. I’ve gotten quite fast at doing Powertrain R&Rs on VWs

I own a 2016 VW Touareg TDI, so far I did 15000 miles, no issues. Definitely a luxurious vehicle without screaming “look at me’ very understated

Mine is all city driven, I get around 10 mpg. The best I've gotten was on a highway trip. Got close to 17 mpg. But I'm keeping it until it dies completely.

I would disagree with getting the air suspension. A better and more reliable option is getting the steel suspension with a 2" riser. Less repairs and better for towing. Using a weight distribution and sway bar is not recommended by VW with the air suspension. If you tow then the steel suspension is better (heavier towing / 5k plus). With the riser you get the added lift and can get some nice off road tires that are rated for towing.

I meant to say that Tommy's Toureg has "center" and rear locking difs -- it does not have a "front" locking dif.

If the cupholders ever piss you off. The 06+ fit and are deeper. I have an 04 vr with air and the locker.

There was even a W12 Version of the Touareg with 450hp. It had the same engine as a the Bentley Continental GT except that one was twin turbo and had 560 hp.

Any thoughts on the gen 1 Cayenne w/all those or most of those same features?

i bought one in a fair condition with airbag light on 3.5l V6 petrol 2007 4 factory fitted exhausts. 133000kms on leather seating, air suspension, low/ high diff lock option, paddle shifters for $4500NZD .... yeah, bad on fuel but overall works like SUV and TRUCK .. engine seems to be very accessible you could work on easily.

Always liked the Touareg, even tried to buy one when I worked in the Middle East. Finally found a low mileage one in Washington State, 2005 V8 two owner 75000 miles., problem is its to nice to take off road at this time. Black on black, watching your videos on the car just persuaded me to actually by this one as we live in Montana and all wheel drive is such a plus around here. Didn't want a Subaru or Quatro so went with VW.

I appreciate the details break down but I surprised you didn’t even mention the v6 TDI T2 (2009-2010). While you couldn’t get them with a rear diff lock they could be had with air suspension, are very reliable, have the power that the V6 gas lacked and get way better gas mileage then the lot (25 highway).

I’m from Europe Portugal and I love watching yours video, I’m looking for a daily driver than can go off road, I start looking for the old Touareg here from watching yours videos.. I’m undecided from the Touareg, Mercedes ML, or the Land Rover Freelander 2

I have 2016 Tourage V6 gas and has been the best car I have ever owned. Bought it with 60k for $19,200 in 19. And sits at 140k with zero major issues, a wheel speed sensor has been he biggest repair. It has been properly maintained since the first owner, keep up on regular maintenance and it will be fine.

I have a tunned 2008 V10. 400 hp and 1000 nm torque. An absolute monster.

It is one of the best vehicles there is ... it is excellent both off-road and on the road, and few vehicles can say this ... reliable, spacious, good towing capacity and personally I like it better than any of the later versions, including the latest model, the original is the most beautiful of all ... it would be great to find it here in the USA the R50, although I have seen a normal V10 tdi for sale, but also expensive, since it doubles the price of a normal one

I'd have one but no full size spare, no recovery points and no snorkel, all needed in outback Australia. We have nice diesel options available in Australia as well. The V6 diesel is a beast. I hired one in Germany in 2010 and had it on 220 kph on the autobahn. Fuel economy was unreal mid 8 liters per 100kms, I don't know what that is in US mpg but it's got to be up near 25.

@9:30 describing the v8 as having some problems is like saying the hindenberg was mostly safe.

There is two other german SUVs that can offroad just as well as the touareg. They're the Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7, which are pretty much the same thing as the touareg with different body panels and interiors

The VR6 option in these were the 3.6 not the 3.2. The 3.2 was the option in the golf and r32. As for the engine options for this body style he is correct. At least in the US. All we got were the 3.6, 4.2, and the 5.0tdi. The 3.0tdi wasn’t available until the latest generation and we never got the w12 option in a Touareg only the Phaeton.

V6 diesel is actually the best bang. Why not mentioned??

Hey what small reliable suv you suggest for a daily driver with weekend mild to moderate off roading (for fishing purpose) in Canada?

i use mine for towing. the trailer dwarfs it, but i can take it up any gulch road without issue.
