2010-2015 Chevy Equinox 2.4L Oil leak fix with crankshaft

This is very specific to the known oil leak on the right side of the engine. In the harmonic balancer (crankshaft wheel). This is the only known video to fix. Total cost of the fix is 15$ for the seal, and 8$ for oil sealant from advance Auto parts, 5$ for two cans of brake cleaner .
Engine oil was being slung all over the right side of the motor and parts. This is a direct and effective fix. You may need to do every 20-40k miles.
Mild language warning Disclosure: YOU the viewer are 100% responsible for your own repairs, engine or part damage, and tools. Do not attempt to blame me. This is a where and why, how to fix video. That's it, for the most common problematic oil leak in Chevy Equinox vehicles. This is an easy at home fix I did in my driveway, all tools used: large socket wrench 13/16 socket, coal pick for a jam tool and pry, hammer, brake cleaner x2, engine degreaser, soft end nylon tap to tap the seal in place.
Good luck, I pray this makes its way to many nox owners out there.

I watched your video and to be real honest, I couldn't believe how easy this was. $9 part and 20 minutes of time. I changed my belt while doing the seal. I can't thank you enough for posting the video.

You don't have a cold air intake, you HAD one, but now with that cool filter, you have a warm air intake.

I appreciate your making this video. The bolt that holds the crankshaft balancer on, which you removed to get at the seal, is a torque-to-yield bolt, which is not to be reused. You also have to tighten the new replacement bolt to a specified torque, plus additional degrees as specified by the factory (i.e. tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt to 100 Nm (74 lb ft) plus an additional 125 degrees). Sharing the GM part number of the replacement seal would be a great help. Due to the mileage on the engine and the work required to remove and replace the crankshaft balancer, not putting a new balancer on the engine may turn out to be false economy. I am glad to see that the job can be done in a driveway in a relatively short time. Thanks again for the video and for tracking down the source of the problem of the notorious oil leak. I too have one of these 2010 Equinoxes with the 2.4L Ecotec. Most independent mechanics refuse to work on them, leaving you at the mercy of the dealerships or to your own skill and ingenuity.

I was not aware this was a TTY bolt. Thank you for the info!!! Ill definitely replace this asap. Also, i will get the part #'s for a replacement set of parts. I will also let some of my folks know this as well. I will likely remake a video and get a touch of extra detail in it. Thank you for the support!

Chris Manning In addition to the Haynes manual, an Alldata DIY subscription, a Mitchell subscription, Technical Service Bulletins from GM, and many RU-vid Videos, I was also able to get the 8000 page plus factory service manual in PDF format from an online seller in England, but it came at a price - computer malware came with the manual and it was a real job to remove the malware from my iMac due to latent deficiencies in the MacOS software. No repair ends up being simple on a 2010 Equinox.

Actually the factory air intake that pulled air through the grill was cold air. Your aftermarket intake that pulls air from inside the engine compartment is a warm air intake.

@kegankelly3073
@kegankelly3073 Год назад
This is true unless it's setup correctly. Also, when an engine is tuned properly "cold air intakes" actually just help to bring in air much more easily than the restrictive stock intake does. Most stock intakes are designed in a way to be perfectly matched to the stock tune on the engine and will restrict any power/torque gains that you may get from a piggyback or ECU flash tune. The air is technically warmer but, in a turbocharged application, an intercooler does the job of bringing cool air into the engine for you. A well placed intake only helps the intercooler to have less of a job to do.

I hope my leak is from the front seal, and not the rear seal which requires transmission removal. Thanks for the video . When I have to remove a crank bolt, I wrap a WET ratchet strap (without the ratchet head; just the long strap with the hook) around the pulley in the direction opposite to the bolt removal direction, and hook the the strap onto the frame in the same plane as the pulley. The wrench work will turn the crankshaft for the first few pulls, but the WET ratchet strap will tighten until the bolt cracks loose. A DRY ratchet strap will slip all day long, so wet it first.

I'm impressed, you replaced the stock, cold air housing with multiple baffles/collectors and air filter with a hot air, cone filter that has less surface area than stock. There is a reason for those baffles and cold air intake. A drop-in K&N would have been much better and it maintains the cold air supply. If you do an oil analysis you will find that your silicon (dirt) levels will have increased significantly. This results in more wear. I did testing with a K&N intake system with the same size filter. It sounded louder, but performance suffered. Best results was with a stock air box and K&N panel filter.

I did this today and I found how to stabilize that pulley so you can take that bolt out, if you look real close there are 3 small threaded holes close to the shaft of that pulley, you can either find 3 long bolts to thread through those holes and snug them up against the crankcase, or do what I did and take three 6mm Allen wrenches, I only had 2, and stick them through the threaded holes firm against the crankcase, I did this and that pulley did not move when I broke it loose, I changed the seal and used the 6mm Allen wrenches again to hold that pulley.

GM does have a oil burn recall that addresses this issue! Only under 120k miles. Youll have to pay for the consumption test and oil(85$) ish, but itll fix a 2600$ problem. Update: since this video, i have replaced these parts under that recall myself (a third time) and run Seafoam through my engine. Its cleaned out considerably better than it was and running at very smooth RPM's. The oil burn has been little to none at all compared. I did this leak fix at 182k miles. Folks; this ISN"T the only place oil will leak. This front oil seal (because this engine is mounted sideways) is only 1 area oil can leak out of. The rear oil seal, that can blow out because of a simple clogged or frozen PCV is more dreaded in contrast to this authors false dictation.

Really $1500. Sorry, a rear main seal replacement is $1500 because the shop needs to pull the transmission to replace the $20 part. This is a $200 job tops. Whoever put the sealant on your oil pan used way too much. It likely squeezed out on the inside also, and will breakdown and get stuck in your oi pickup. These GDI engines are notorious for fuel contamination, oil breakdown, clogging PCV, and rear engine main seal failures. Use high quality synthetic oil and never go over 3k miles on an oil change. Ignore the Oil Life Monitor.

well, you seem to know how to fix to a point. But that "this" was a cold chisel, and the other "this" is called the harmonic balancer. It is the crankshaft seal, Not a "ring". And the metal ring inside is the pressure spring. All seals have them. What the outer part is metal or nylon. Maybe you need to update your mechanical terminology a bit. Just an observation.

The belt tensioner has a 3/8” square drive cast into it for a ratchet to easily remove the belt your crank flywheel or whatever your calling it. That’s a oil pump the harmonizer thing that’s actually a harmonic balancer If you want to screw around with your car that’s fine but I think it’s completely irresponsible of you to be showing others acting like you know what your doing the next guy may not luck out like you did he might end up with thousands of dollars in repairs
