I want to THANK YOU! There is no way I could afford to pay to have this done. Your instructions gave me the confidence to even attempt this! This was definitely way more accessible than I thought it would be. I did have a couple of troubling codes (P3191 and P0118) but I didn't panic, because I was confident in your instructions. After I tightened the EGR manifold and released the lock on the air intake (hose clamp), the P3191 went away, and the car stayed running. And simply plugging in the temp sensor cable took care of the P0118 code. Time will tell if I sealed everything properly, but Thank you again for taking your time to help!

Don’t be Me! Follow this full video! I have spent a total of 3 months doing this job purely because I didn’t watch beginning to end! I have learned More then enough and have pulled it apart 4 times😂 I’m 19 and Finally Just replaced a Full head Now Because I destroyed the last one by not timing the Crank ( Every Valve on Exhaust side was beyond bent) it’s running better then ever and I’m more confident in working on these cars then I ever imagined

Thank you so much Walt. You helped me with my 08 Prius and I recommended you to all my friends in Santa Rosa including Angel Motors... how serendipitous, we may need you again for my 2015 Prius V. I think people would really appreciate a complete list in the description of parts they will want to order before getting started (camshaft gaskets, o rings, bolts, silicone, etc) as well as the non standard tools (E-Socket set, triple square set, etc.) Otherwise id say this video is perfect. Just the thing to reaffirm one's faith in the goodness of others to the community. 😲😲

It can. The Car Care Nut is adamant that folks don’t do it. But I do trust GM here. They’ve done a lot. If I end up doing mine, provided it doesn’t get overheated, I’m just going to clean the surfaces and go.

If the engine block is slightly wrapped, is it possible to resurface it in-engine? If not, if it still worth the repair?
@west_park7993

if the engine is warped, you better extract it. and warping you see is the tip of the iceberg. if this happened to me, i would replace the entire engine with gen 4 prius. seems like they fixed the problem

@west_park7993
@west_park7993 6 месяцев назад
@@PanaMaJwaaRd so, what? the engine has massive thermal inertness, and stopping for a few minutes does not make it cool off too much. you can try it yourself. plug-in a odb2 tool and watch in real time the coolant temperature.
@west_park7993
@west_park7993 6 месяцев назад
the original toyota gaskets may be the problem. mine is gone for absolutely no reason. never driven the car with low oil or coolant, regular oil check... why???
@PanaMaJwaaRd
@PanaMaJwaaRd 6 месяцев назад
I understand that, i simply mean that if an engine slams on a gasket 10x more than a regular car, thats why these hybrids "gaskets seem to go faster than normal cars" never said anything about car overheating.

@west_park7993
@west_park7993 6 месяцев назад
did you remove the bolt? you can slide egr sideways. then, you can use a longer bolt, place the nut all the way to the head, bolt the egr, then tighten the nut over the egr. or, you can use a long bolt, cut off the head, flatten it so you can use adjustable wrench or players on it.
@SocratesZayas
@SocratesZayas 6 месяцев назад
@west_park7993 yes used a 6.00 bolt extractor from advanced auto and it was easy peasy...
@west_park7993
@west_park7993 6 месяцев назад
@@SocratesZayas perhaps we talking different things. i thought you broke the tip with the E8 on it, but the rest of the bolt was intact. if you broke the other end, then it is somewhat more challenging. however, if you have the tip of the bolt in the thread, there is no stress on the bolt and you should be able to turn it with a sharp flat head screwdriver. if there is no rust

HELP PLEASE. 2012 prius, 150,000 miles. random sporadic unpredictable overheating since june, finally Toyota determined it is a HG. got a set from rockauto, viktor reinz. The original HG appeared OK, nothing massive. Talked to a specialist, who convinced me that the leak is minor, and invisible, but enough to send exhaust gases into the coolant sometimes. Test for exhaust gases in coolant was negative. Also, coolant was clear pink, no sediment, no mud, no discoloration. Anyway, I just finished the job, and the overheating is now full time. test driving with autel mk808bt watching temperature and pump revolution. temperature was 80+ and then went all the way to 101. I stopped several times to let temperature go down to 90 to come back home. Even at 101 the radiator fans were OFF. They are supposed to turn on at 92 or 95. If I turn the AC on, then they begin to spin, meaning they are not busted, and the relays are OK. I was very careful to reconnect all electrical wires. Did I miss any? I made detailed description in my car logbook of every simple step I took. I worked slowly and meticulously. Today took apart and flushed the radiators with garden hose . Coolant and water came out clean. No sediments, no deposits. Should I prepare a publication for the SAE International Journal of Engines? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Ever figure it out? Sounded like you had 2 separate issues. Usually blown gaskets on this particular vehicle will not cause the car to overheat.
@west_park7993
@west_park7993 4 месяца назад
@@himeedajew absolutely agree with you. this is why i did not want to believe it. it took me 6 months to accept it was the gasket, not smtg else. toyota looked inside the cylinders under pressure with boroscope. and ever since i changed the hg the problem disappeared, >2000 miles. now we know that water pumps never die, and 3rd party water pumps are good. if you have to change pump, then change the rotor only. however, subaru and buick dealer repair specialists, both said you cant tell by the appearance of the gasket, once it is out of he car, if it was bad or good.

After resurfacing the head, how do you compensate for the loss of height? Is it advisable to resurface just enough to accommodate 2 original Toyota head gasket, stacked one on top of the other?

what bolts do you use? is Elring good company? it is german and supplies stuttgart. the gasket: I got disillusioned by fell-pro a few years ago. I like victror reinz and beck-arney. there arel very cheap packages, all gaskets and bolts for about 60-70 dollars. i am quite suspicious on these deals. so, i have to buy a chain kit, gasket kit and bolts kit, total around 300 dollars, which beats the dealers price 3600-6800 dollars. You did not show changing the lower timing chain. it is included in the kit. i guess, it is not so important. it drives much lesser load, and is low end of the engine, so it is not exposed to much heat.
