This is my Transit Connect that I originally built to haul tools and cameras around. I got the idea to move into my van so I added to what I had already built, which made it a very unique van conversion. I am now rebuilding the interior so stay tuned for more updates!

Great build! So much more interesting seeing someone build it out specifically for their needs,proffesional combined with free time. If I never see another rock climber/mountainbiking/sheltered-white -young-adults-on-a-long-vacation builds I'll be a happy man.

I have the same exact van and I have lived in it for years off and in and many epic adventures. About to rebuild a few things and head out for mushroom hunting season soon. Cool ideas.

Love the tables on each door, also appreciate the security “get home” issue.

Incredibly well thought out layout for ur original intended use. Yeah, once u spend some time in the van, u find out where things go and what works. Look forward to seeing ur next build progress. Girlfriend and I just finished our 2017 Nissan NV200 portable van build which is similar in size to ur Transit Connect but lower roof with longer cargo area inside. Our setup can be installed for weeks long adventures and removed for cargo van use in 15 minutes. Used 3/4" plywood (3 coats polyurethane) for 57.5" long, 14.5" deep table with 3 hinged 19" wide, 14.5" deep drop down leafs that rest on a lip attached to the underside of a 75" long, 26" deep bench that then completes a full van width 55" wide bed with 16.5" space underneath. A 4" thick fullsize futon (Amazon) is bed or sofa seat with backrest. When leafs are flipped on top of table we have 13.5" walking aisle - lip attached on underside of bench extends 1" past edge. Another piece of plywood extends the table when in bed mode, is pinned to lips and rests on crap bucket near passenger seat back. It has desk leg mounts (legs screw on for outside cooking use) and is pinned (to keep it from moving) flat on top of bench behind driver seat back all other times. Plenty o room for lots of plastic bins and soft bag storage under both bench and table. High in the roof corners we use stretchy netting S hooked in some of numerous factory holes provides more storage. Plenty o bungee cords for tie downs and hanging towels etc. Strong magnets with hooks (duct taped on backs so no paint scratches) support even more portable storage that can be used anywhere including holding 2 soft nylon pocket units salvaged from a junked tent, attached to back barn doors. This is a HUGE upgrade from our 1st generation (toaster) Scion XB travel vehicle which has 25K of just adventure miles on it.

great idea about the lock box. I hope you put a video on after you re do the trans connect. I had one and hope to get one again. Bad decision to trade for what i have now. I made do for my camping trip last week in my Ford Escape but not great. Oh, I just saw where you posted the next one. Good. I want to be ready for the big camp trip next summer with my family. At 80 years I am not camping all by myself, but everyone else in family have their own camp trucks etc. When I bought mine new in 2010 and started traveling had a lot of conversations with people who had never seen one. People were really in awe. Now they are all over the place. Good video.

That's a lot in a tiny space. I don't know if you're interested, but Bob Wells has a video with a Fantastic Fan install in the back window. It would eliminate the need to cut a hole in your roof.

I'd love to see a video in the future where you reflect on this old layout compared to the new one! Because I've seen a dozen with the pull out bed but yours is the first like this and it is so similar to what I planned! I reasoned I don't need floor space if I can't stand up, I don't need a chair if I always work with my feet up anyway, gravity can feed my water, the kitchen can fold down, I get so much more underbed storage.. Etc. I'd like to see if there are any more pros or cons on this build once you can compare it to living in your new one :) stay cool

OMG, I just found you and immediately subbed! THIS van is the exact van I want! I’m looking at a 2011. I’ve been wondering how it would be to live in. I’m a short female...if a man can do it, so can I! I’m SO EXCITED! Just watched this whole video and can see on the side that you DID he new one. Can’t wait to see it!

I just found a 2011 transit connect xlt yesterday and bought it today! It was a cargo van but someone already did a mini camper conversion, with small sliding RV windows with screens on the rear sides, insulation, small table, drawers, shelves, solar and a westfalia type seat tri-fold bed with seatbelts! So freaking excited. It had less than 84K miles and appears to have been very well taken care of! I’m just going to use it for quick trips and stealth camping. I have an Aliner trailer I tow with my Honda Pilot for longer trips. I’m so glad I don’t have to do the build myself, at least while I figure out what I like and don’t like. Buy something cheaper, try to live in it easily and THEN plan a build. That way you don’t waste your time and money on things you think you need but find out you don’t need. I don’t need much for a few nights of urban camping, so my van is perfect. I’m 5’2” it feels perfect for me.

Nice build and some great ideas. I just subbed and I'm looking forward to your rebuild. I have been thinking about building a Transit Connect so I'm searching out build videos to get some ideas and see what can be done with the space. One quick question if you have a chance to reply. Have you ever tracked your gas mileage with that van and if so, what were you getting? (Guess that's technically two questions)

Hi. You knew when you posted this video that people would say : 'don't change anything!', so let me be the first, lol. I really like what you have done, but as you say it isn't working for you as well as you would like, so I understand why you want to redo it. Have subbed on the strength of what I have already seen, so am looking forward to future videos :) PS you might want to look at an 'aeropress' to replace your coffee machine. I have one in my van, it does brew a good mug of coffee, is small and not messy! Bonus :)

How is this rack connected to van? Pre-existing Transit holes or fabricated brackets to permit thru-bolting to interior as I do not see roof drip edges ? Marine grade aluminum is another option for rackets Roto pack fuel / water containers might be an option for roof. Can transit suspensions be upgraded / increased weight capacity? Any cavities under floor for adding tool bins or custom storage nooks?

It was services done at Ford before engine is clean runs great but Tran. Might slip 1 to 2 nd. ? Getting it look at. Could be me getting used to the van too. I love the van too

Hey Josh, what kind of wood and screws did you use for your back door? I have a 2011 transit connect without windows on the back door, so I'm most definitely going to work on them like you have. I love the fold down table. I was thinking that I could do that but also double it as storage. Thanks!

I've been using a Ford Focus Wagon and it is great except for the lack of head room. Unfortunately, they do not offer your vehicle as a manual transmission; big downside IMO. If I was in that vehicle, I'd utilize a Murphy Bed. The side shelf (or shelves) can fold down into a bed when needed and leave the space open for functional use when not sleeping

FDCbadaman that's BS. I've been rear ended 5 times. 3/5 by men. 2/5 times the car was totaled--both by men. Both genders drive like idiots. I can't wait until robots drive most cars.
@darkbluematter1753
@darkbluematter1753 6 лет назад
Okay, I had to research that and I'll concede that women are slightly more likely to cause crashes, though the crashes are less likely to be serious, which is why insurance rates are a bit higher for men. Getting hit sucks regardless, we can both agree on that. I'll do my part as a woman to try not to cause any accidents and redeem my gender's driving stats, LOL 😊👍🏼
