Here I am showing you a common problem with the 3.5L iVTEC that is found in the Odyssey and Pilot. There may still be more problems but the Timing Tensioner is bad and has to be replaced first.
Just want to thank the video creator, have this van I use for my business took it to a mechanic and told me to scrap it because the noise is coming from engine, showed him this video and Lo and behold that was the issue! Saved me a ton of money from buying a new van.
I have a 2006 and just had this done by my mechanic. This video was great because you showed the engine noise before you fixed it. When I took it in I knew exactly what was needed. Timing belt, water pump was leaking and the hydraulic tensioner was making the noise. And the belt was loose just like the video. My mechanic did the full kit replacement and the engine now runs perfectly. Less then 1 grand in total. This video helped understand the issue. Thanks!
@@velizarmilutinovic2947 yeah I wish I knew how to do mechanic stuff. Could save a ton. Everytime I try I make a mess of it. Now I just pay for a pro who has the experience to do it right.
@@deseretodyssey8157 Sorry to disappoint you but most of those shops pay mechanics minimum wage, and they do very poor work make sure you always check that your wheel bolts are tightened before you leave any tire shop 😂
You just saved my van from the scrap yard! Mechanic listened to it make this same sound and said the engine was shot. Just watched this and felt the tensioner knock like crazy. Think that was the problem all along.
@@bryonaderhold2009 Got the rock auto timing belt kit and that was all my cost. I did it myself by watching RU-vid and took a weekend working in it off and on
My daughter bought a 06 odyssey at a car lot. The guy told her that they had replaced the water pump and timing chain. This is making this exact noise and the guy told her that when they put the timing chain cover back on that they probably bent the belt guard. I don’t trust car lot salesmen so I’m going to look into that tensioner. Thanks for the video.
@@jillianchambers3267 Long Screw Driver used like a Diagnostic Stethoscope put the handle to your ear and touch on the area where noise is coming from but be careful near rotating parts. as a matter of fact harbor freight sells the actual thing pretty cheap like 5 bucks that will help pinpoint the area. Valves would have to be checked with the covers off.
Unfortunately, I had an 07 Odyssey driven without any oil and could not turn it on until the next day. I place engine oil in it and it turned it on but it sounded just like this engine noise.
If my van is making this exact noise should I get the repairs you recommending done asap? I had my timing belt, tensioner, water pump changed at 180k at Honda dealer and their warranty is 12/12 now the van has 211k and its making this noise right after I had taken it to the dealer again for an oil change I feel like they did something. It makes the noise more frequently if I have the A/C on please help
They told me at the Honda dealership with my 3.0 accord with new water pump (which should be done for preventative maintenance) and new spark plugs would be about $1800. I ended up doing all of it including buying the tools to do it for about 800. Probably could be done 450-500 with tools.
I did some diagnosing with my stethoscope and it does sound like the tensioner has some issues. My guess would be that both of our tensioners are starting to go bad and the reason for the sound going away is caused from our timing belts warming up and constricting. I'll be changing my timing belt and tensioner probably this weekend
Not trying to thread jock but I have a video on my channel of how to replace the tensioner and the timing belt on a Saturn Vue V6 (j series) if anyone has that particular car
Not on RU-vid as there are too many Shops in different locations there are websites that show national averages for repairs. AAA has such a feature on their website
Dealership did it for about $800 with the parts I asked em to put in, a timing belt kit from Aisin and a new serpentine/drive belt. But the valve adjustment was quoted at another $700 at the same dealership.
I have the same sound in my 2012 153,000 miles honda odyssey , mechanic said its a loose bearing and would cost $7,500 . should i get a second opinion ?
I have a question, my wife has put diesel on my 14 Odyssey!! took it to the dealer that cost me 800 bucks to fix and I have to say maybe 4 months after I have the same rattle sound as the one in this video, but in mines it goes in n out some days sounds some days NOT. But this rattle noise happens when the car is cold I’m from NY and as soon THE CAR warms up the rattle goes away. What can I do so the rattle disappear, please hope to hear from you, have a bless day thank you
One other issue is the Valve adjustment. I had many of them over the years make noise. Timing Belt is still subject however. Also, OUCH I live in the wrong area, I would have charged about 200 to get the diesel out and that would have included the tow LOL.
@@ralfsautomotive thank you so much for your reply! Yes we both live in the wrong area LOL! WOW 200 bucks with the tow smh! Again I live in NY so here everything is expensive 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️ thank you again for your advice, I will look into it
Idk if anyone will read this or not but I'm hearing a noise like this and when I initially accelerate it seems to be louder. I can hear nothing if I have foot on break then if I tap on the gas pedal I hear the noise stop and go every time I tap I hear the sound and I let off it tapers off. Is this maybe timing belt?
The Honda's have Valves that should periodically be checked for proper adjustment and the noise I was talking about is the timing belt tensioner by itself. And Yes I try to read all the comments.
@@WhitneyAbrina - This video will show the Timing Belt and Tensioner. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tWQ6gV82x0E.html Seems to be a common problem when people don't do this service as recommended by Honda every 105,000 miles. Also, the valves periodically need adjustments along with the rocker bolts retorqued to specs as they loosen up over time.
I believe I may have this problem with my 2006 Odyssey but the noise gradually disappears once the engine is warmed up. It makes the noise when the engine is colder especially on cooler days. Would this be consistent with this problem has anyone ever had this
@@ralfsautomotive thanks Sir. It's got 315000 kms on it (Canada) which is roughly 196000 miles. Well cared for by last owner though. I'm told this isn't bad mileage for a Honda compared to say a dodge caravan. But I've also heard they get due for timing about that many miles. Does that sound about right?
@@robertb8629 You lucky if nothing happened! Timing Belt should be done every 60K Miles regardless, but these engines do tend to loose valve clearance. Usually I see the exhaust Valves going tight and the Intake get loose. I just checked mine (78K) as well and they where no longer in spec. It may not be a rule but is a common thing on the hondas as they do not use hydraulic lifters.
@@ralfsautomotive this is good to know thanks! I'm hoping and assuming the last owner had it regularly done as he seemed to have maintained it quite well (no rust despite Canada, all scratches filled, oil changed before selling, etc) he seemed to have some pride of ownership
?? It is a tensioner problem has nothing to do with a warm engine. If you have a cold rattle valves need to be adjusted. It may even say that in the manual.
Wow my van just started making that sound the vsa light came in and the engine light came on help pkeasei was like what the hell. How much would that cost?
sorry I did not see the reply. Anyway, I an sure by now it is to late to answer but for the rest of folks having the same question. I would say plan on 3-4 hours of labor.
Just loosely place your finger on the tensioner, you will know if it is bad or not! You may want to investigate the Valve lash as well it seems nobody ever wants to do that. It is adjustable on that engine. The One in the Video( and others) was way out.
@ Ralf’s Automotive Diagnostics and Repair Can you just replace the belt Tensioner device, without replacing the timing belt itself? I had the original belt replaced at like, 90,000 miles...The van has 158,000 miles on it now. Please advise me and Thank you for the video!!
I have a Video where the engine is out of the Vehicle if that helps. But I am about to change the Belt on mine and could make a Video of it as it is going to be in the Car.
I’m having the same noise in my 2012 odyssey, mechanic is saying he needs to replace lifters and timing belt. But I’m thinking it can just be the timing belt, he said he has to access lifter to get to the timing belt anyways.
I would find a different Mechanic. Timing Belt(Tensioner) and Belt are very easy to do. Replace the Key in the Crank as well. I would also highly recommend a Valve Train Adjustment as they(Rocker Arms) are usually too loose.
@@oeungmao1 no engine light. Ticking is pretty loud and annoying. Took it into one shop and they said just install a new engine with 100k for $1200. Thinkin about it
Absolutely painful to watch. He almost spits out what the issue is 20 times before the 4 min mark bu does not. Start the vid 4 min in or suffer the insanity.
