What symptoms do you experience to know that the struts need to be changed? I have a 2009 Sonata, 108,000 Km, it drives well, but get a hollow / thumping sound when going over pot-holes, and heard mostly on the front passenger side. Mechanics inspected the suspension and the car passed safety.
Bad shock/strut will cause a clatter noise going over bumps or like you mentioned sometimes a hollow/ thump sound. Can also cause uneven treadware if not taken care of may get low spots in the tire in certain areas. Bad shock/strut can cause the tire to bounce an cause low spots is what I'm trying to say. But if you are getting a clattering thumping hollow sound its time to change those. Ball joints will kinda make the same noise but you'll feel it in the steering.
Problem with inspections they dont go through it thouroughly an really it's a waste of time an money. The person who owns the vehicle should be responsible to be sure all is fine with it. My state did away with inspections honestly I'm glad. Some states still recommend it.
