This 2010 Jeep Patriot had a problem with the right headlight. Both high and low beams were inoperative. TIPM is setting codes B1630 and B1638 current. The customer thought it was a defective bulb so took the opportunity to install LED bulbs. Problem was corroded grounds at G104. This was also causing the brake warning light to illuminate and set a code C1008 for a problem with the brake fluid level sensor. There are 7 grounds at G104.

Jeep Patriot specifically is one of the 9% of cars that needs an extra part called a decoder to install and connect between LEDs bulbs and Headlight housing that solves the flickering and alleviates the code issues, hope this helps someone! Awesome video though great to see the process.

I'm having the same problem on my 2013 Jeep Patriot that just started yesterday, left side. I suspected a grounding issue but I didn't know where to find the grounding junction. Now I have an idea where it's at! Great work!
@PhillipBailey
@PhillipBailey 11 месяцев назад
I believe there is a similar ground on the left side frame rail.

@@PhillipBailey Knowing now that the middle wire on the headlamp socket goes directly to chassis ground, here's what I did: I spliced in a piece of wire to that middle ground lead on the socket using a Scotchlok connector, crimped on an eyelet end then fastened to ground using the same bolt that holds the negative battery cable to the left side of the core support. Left headlight is working again! Once the weather cools down and I have more time, I'll go through the ground wire bundle(s) the right way and take care of any poor connections.

@@PhillipBailey Yeah, Eric O from South Main Auto did a left headlight on a older Pacifica and it was on the rail. I figure we'll follow the ground wire back from the light and redo the ground. Thanks.

Thank you for this awesome video, Phillip!!👏👏 You're a d@mned genius!🤓🤓 My 2012 Jeep Patriot had the same exact issue at almost the same exact mileage as the vehicle in your video. With your detailed instruction I was able to perform 'my version' of this fix. I so badly want to keep "buying American", but they make it so damned hard by cheapening designs and making non-robust design decisions. You get the feeling that you are driving around in something, trusting your safety, that was assembled from parts from the lowest bidders.😑😑

I believe I have the same issue, but in the left headlight. Watching your video game me a solid idea on what to do, it was great! I wanna jump on it and repair it on my own but I have no tools.. :(

If I remember there is the same ground in the same location on the left side. That's possibly your problem. You could just try grounding the left headlight to an alternate ground.

Hey there fellow Canadian!! Thanks for such informative content. I have a 2011 Patriot with the same issue and I'm no mechanic but I'd like to try this repair myself. Would you have any idea of how much a fix like this would cost if I tell the mechanic the problem and show them exactly what needs to be done? I'm in Laval which is a city just outside of Montreal, Quebec. I'd also like to know how you extended the wires so they would reach cause if I cut and splice the wires I don't think they'll be long enough to reach the bolt? Thanks, Cathy 🇨🇦
@PhillipBailey
@PhillipBailey Год назад
Hello Cathy. I've been to Laval. It's beautiful city. I used uninsulted crimp butt connectors and heat shrink tube. The copper wire will likely be oxidized so solder won't stick. Added about six inches of new wire doubling up some of the lighter gage grounds. Soldered and heat shrunk the eyelets though. The actual repair of the wires took around an hour and around $20 in electrical supplies. In the video you see where the grounds are located. If you look closely you will likely see the failed wire in the group. Searching for the location of the ground took around 40min. Good luck and merry Christmas.

good job on the ground fix , I guess its better to have all the grounds in one place then all over the place like GM does , it made me laugh when I seen a Miskito in the cab near the windshield and 3 '' of snow on the bumper , only in northern ONT does that happen lol.

What device are you using to diagnose the codes? Is it something regular people can get access to?
@PhillipBailey
@PhillipBailey 7 месяцев назад
I'm using a Snap-on Verus Edge tablet that is connected to a Identifix which is a subscription service provider of service data. There are many capable scanners available for a reasonable price that will do the same functions as the Snap-on will. Try Alldatadiy.com for access to service information.

Really like those bare butt splicers with sealed shrink tubing. I've had soldered wire fail due to embrittlement and vibration.
@PhillipBailey
@PhillipBailey 2 года назад
Yes and you can really crimp them unlike the shrinkable but splices were if you crimp them too aggressively they may fail due to compromising the seal.

hey! where are you in Northern Ontario? I'm in Sudbury, I got my Power Steering Cooling Assembly Line replaced yesterday in My 2009 Jeep Compass Sport and now my passenger headlight is not working. We noticed it right after leaving the shop I got it done at. All the electrical for that lamp is literally in the exact same area where the lines were replaced. My signal and fog lights work but my high and low beams...nothing...driver side perfect.
@PhillipBailey
@PhillipBailey 2 года назад
Check the ground the same as this truck. Both high and low would be affected. It's kinda a bitch to access it. There are like 6 or 7 wires there.

@@PhillipBailey OH way up northern northern Ontario LOL! I will have a look at the grounds, my power steering cooling lines were leaking all over the electrical in that area but I had no issues previously even with the severity of the leak. It was only after the lines were repaired in the shop I got it done at that the headlamp stopped working. It left the shop with them not working, same headlight as the side the repair was done too, I'm wondering if the guy accidentally broke the ground somewhere along the circuit either at the end where this one was busted on your video or elsewhere in the wire while he was moving them around fitting the power steering cooling lines in.

So I redid all the grounds right, so my highbeam works now, but the low beam still doesn’t can you run me through how to test the power to the light by probing the 3 wires to the back of the 3 pin connector
@ganjatokes3476
@ganjatokes3476 Год назад
because I’ve redone the grounds ALL of them even a separate set of grounds for the right blinker, everything works BUT the low beam on the right passenger side
@PhillipBailey
@PhillipBailey Год назад
The right low beam power wire is pink. It should turn on with the low beam. You can compare the position to the left side. Test with a test light connected to the battery ground. Try swapping the bulbs side to side or try a new bulb. You can also try disconnecting the battery for several minutes to clear any codes in the front control module. If you have a scan tool that will communicate with the front control module you can read and clear the codes with that. The FCM is also referred to as the Totaly Integrated Power Module or TIPM.
@ganjatokes3476
@ganjatokes3476 Год назад
Gotcha I tried new bulb haven’t tried clearing codes I’m gonna try and see wat codes I’m getting now, do you think I could be dealing with a possible break in that pink wire? Or possible blown fuse? I took my meter and a needle and got nothing from the pink wire but the white wire which would have to be high beam got 12v I definitely did a good job on the grounds extended them and all with butt splices like you did
@PhillipBailey
@PhillipBailey Год назад
It's not the ground since the high beam works. I don't believe there is a specific fuse as the TIPM uses high side drivers to supply power. If a circuit is shorted the TIPM will often shut off the driver until the code is cleared.
