If your hood no longer wants to stay up on its own, then the struts(or sometimes called shocks) that support the weight of the hood need to be replaced. In this video, I will show you how to replace your 2010 Lexus RX 350 hood struts easily yourself!

Incredibly helpful video! I can't thank you enough. I finished the job alone in under 5 minutes. Pro-tip to those doing it alone like I was - I'm not sure about all struts, but for the one in the description box, one strut is strong enough to keep the hood open. When you open the hood, use your head to hold it up while doing one side.

Just finished with both the hood and the cargo lift gate. You might say I've been a bit tardy in getting to these projects. :-} HOOD: I removed a side shroud in order to get to the base of the strut. My recommendation is to flush messing with the "C" clip and removing the shroud. Just carefully use a large screwdriver, twist, and pop the base loose. Easy to do. Also easy to install new ones.....just line up the ends and give them a rap. They'll seat easily. Trying to get the "C" clip back into place can be a hassle if it gets completely removed....learned the hard way. Everything now works like a champ!

Instead of using a long screwdriver to pry off the struts, use a small screwdriver to pop off the "C" clip around the top and bottom connectors. It makes the removable process even easier. Then for the installation of the new ones, just pop the new ones on the top and bottom ball joints on the car (being careful to notice before you remove the old ones, which end of the struct goes on the hood and which goes on the car body!! Believe me - you'll be glad you noticed this before the install - as you get pissed when you have to pry them off and start again!!!!!)
@CarolinaCowboys
@CarolinaCowboys 5 лет назад
Jay Fox I tried taking off the C clips first and it was much more difficult than just popping the whole thing off

I don't think you can get to the clip on the bottom. I have to do exactly this repair on my wife's RX350, I will see how it goes.

Cool. Just picked up a used ‘10 RX350 which had them blown.... seems to be pretty common with those Not sure it was mentioned before, but to remove the upper ball joint, the easy way is to just remove the spring clip from the old one; no prying needed to remove it. 5 min job and $20-$25 from Amazon and back in biz!!! P.S., the stock stereo is pretty damn good!!!

Carolina Cowboys The American car manufactures should be ashamed of themselves with how superior some of the Toyota/Lexus products are compared to theirs.... I’m sure it will pi** a lotta people off by saying that, but IMO, it’s reality...

Using a pair of "Vice Grips" on the opposite strut, will keep the hood open safer and easier than a stick.

I have an RX 2011 and the stupid hood struts failed like 2 years ago. Lexus quality my a$$. What a rip off! I was about to call and complain but i guess i was not alone. :-) Anyway, i found out a Chinese made pair is like $15. Might last as long as well because i open the hood like 2 times a year lol. Thanks for the video and instructions.

Would a local respected mechanic charge as much as the dealership?

SG local mechanics are using the estimated repair times from the same shop manuals the dealerships use. The difference is the labor cost can be as much as double the local mechanics cost.

Tip: an awl can be worked down under the edge of the C clamp far enough to loosen it. Having done that, I twisted the strut by hand to loosen it from the ball. My luck gravitates toward bending or breaking fittings if I just tried prying with a lever. Thanks for the video.
@CarolinaCowboys
@CarolinaCowboys 2 года назад
LOL, ya I'm sure there was a proper way to remove those. I'm working on posting a video replacing the rear hatch struts and I think I used the same method as before

Thank you so much for posting this hood struts fix. I am a 65 yo female, and with the help of my husband and a broom to hold up the hood while making the fix, I was able to remove old ones (after prying clamps off on each end first making it easier to remove the old ones) and replacing with new $20 struts that I bought on Amazon via your link for the struts. Lexus wanted a little over $400 for this 10 minute replacement (which would have probably taken Lexus 3 minutes), and my cost was all of $20. I love youtube and the people that post videos like this! Thanks!!!!!
