I have very few mechanical skills. This video was helpful for replacing the entire headlamp assembly, not just a light bulb. I followed this video with success. I did not remove the entire bumper. I removed bumper fasteners under the hood and by the tire on the side of the headlamp replacement. I did not remove any screws or fasteners on the bottom of the bumper. I was able to pull the bumper far enough out to get the headlamp out and the new headlamp in. It took about an hour of time. I paid $110 for the headlamp assembly on amazon. The garage wanted $575 for the headlamp assembly and labor to install it.
I used this video to replace my headlight assemblies. It was very helpful, especially the way he pointed at and counted the screws and fasteners. My 2010 Prius is 8 years old and many of the plastic fasteners were brittle and broke, and most of the screws were quite rusty. If you do this I'd suggest stocking up on screws and fasteners. I also didn't disconnect the fog lights, just left the bumper resting on the ground while I worked. I also left all the headlight wires connected and just put on new bulbs and put everything in my new assembly- I'd recommend doing them one at a time so you can see one done properly where all the wires go! Finally for those of you who are mocking this video, the reason I had to replace my assemblies is that I replaced the passenger's side myself without taking the bumper off, and it was crooked and wound up melting part of the assembly. So be careful if you try to get your hand in to change it!
Tried to change the SIDE MARKER light bulb on my 2014 Prius yesterday using some of the "easy" way as shown in some videos. Spent half a day trying to do it. I did finally manage to get the bulb out but could not get it back in. Finally gave up around 6PM. Don't recommend trying it, just do it the right way, so easy. Saw this video this morning and removed the front grill/bumper cover and took took the assembly out and changed the bulb. Was easy and quick. It only takes a few minutes to take the front end off. Thank you very much for the video.
I used your video exclusively to replace my headlights and would like to commend you on the detail and accuracy of this gem. Thanks so much for making it. I was extremely successful and the car looks new again. Thank you!
Great Video. My headlight has a water leak and need to replace. As far as replacing the bulbs, I have been replacing them without moving a thing. Removing the bulb is straight forward. But installing the bulb can be tricky. I found that installing the bulb first (twist in place), then connecting the wire is the easiest way. Good Luck !
Thank you for being so thorough! My husband tried to replace & now the lights are turned & not in right, which now makes harder to see the road at night. We will be taking on this project. Appreciate this greatly!!!!
Yes I think this happened to me. Has anyone else found that the lights are mis-directed after they change the bulbs (just the normal way, without removing the bumper?) I found this video because the mechanic told me I need a new headlight assembly ...
Man...you are nice, amazing thing to help me and my family table save hundreds...tku tku tku...Lord God bless you and your precious family. I will pray for you...
Awesome video, my 2010 Prius needs a new headlight assembly because it is taking on moisture and this video really shows what I need to do. Thanks for taking the time.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for taking the time to show how to replace the lights, particularly the side and corner lights on the passenger side. You saved me a lot of money.
Even easier way to remove passenger side headlamp bulb is - remove (2) 10 mm bolts holding the coolant tank and move the coolant tank out of the way. DO NOT have to remove the hoses because it stretches far enough out of the way for you to reach under and remove/replace the lamp bulb. You do not have to remove the air intake assembly. The coolant tank had pink coolant in our 2010 Prius.
I have to take issue with you showing a sheet metal screw as being the ONLY type of screw holding the lower pan to the bumper cover. Unless yours have been changed, the normal configuration is some of the bolts are machine thread, they are NOT all the sheet metal ones like you show. This makes it important to keep track of what screw/bolt came from where when you re-assemble things. I have LED'S in all my marker and park lights I don' t know why you'd not use them, you'll never have to replace 'em unless you get a defective one. Nice video thanks a lot, and anyone thinking of installing aftermarket fog lights, take it from me and remove the bumper cover it's FAR easier! Thanks To Dr. for a good video!
Very helpful, detailed, and informative video. I was just tube surfing on how to remove the headlamp assembly when I came across yours. This will truly save me a lot time instead of spending hours trying to figure this out myself. Now I can just get straight to work. Thank you for sharing!
Immensely helpful video! Needed to replace both R and L headlamps because the low beam bulbs, if not positioned properly, will melt away the inside housing. Toyota said it would be $370 + tax for parts and $170 for labor for EACH LAMP equaling more than $1.1K to repair for both!?! That is ludicrous - more expensive than buying a new transmission or engine!!! Hence, I purchased the headlamps on ebay for $200 and because of this video, was able to fix myself in 2 hours. Thanks again Car D. Ologist!!
Thanks for doing this. A lot of people are critical for no reason. This IS what is needed to replace the entire headlight assembly. Yes there are easier ways to replace bulbs. But I want to replace my entire assembly as you have done. New lens make cars look SO MUCH BETTER. I replaced them on my old Ford Explorer out of necessity, and now I'm doing it on my Prius for looks...and better vision. As far as Prius bulbs go I've replaced them in the past without bumper removal. Driver side is a snap. Passenger side is a bear, but I FINALLY got it. No mention about headlight ALIGNMENT. I'm going to tackle the new lens, but wonder if you had to align them after replacing the assembly. I'll keep looking around for more info on that before I start. Thanks!!!!
Add the term "assembly" to the title banner for this video. You singlehandedly rescued me an my wife's 2011 Prius. Also, the part about the side markers I checked after viewing your video and ours were out too.
Very informative video. I just watched it AFTER I finished replacing the passenger side low beam without removing anything but the radiator overflow tank hose. It is tight but possible! Another thing that is important to me. There are no petroleum derived "plastic" body panels! Toyota developed the material from ramie, commonly known as China grass and one of the strongest natural fibers.
Well, I was need to see how to replace the entire assembly. This video did not miss a thing and made it so easy for me and my 2010 Prius. He says to remove the entire cover, but actually I only needed to do one side and it did pull just enough for me to replace that yellowed lens assembly. Thanks for making this video. Worked perfectly.
There is a much easier way to replace the passenger headlamp assembly. Make some hand room by disconnecting the coolant hose and the three screws for the air intake assembly and push everything out of the way so you can get your hand in there. The bulb connection is pointed toward the bottom - turn 90 degrees clockwise toward the engine and the bulb will pull out of the housing. Press the tab and pull the old bulb free. The secret of getting the new bulb in is don't connect it to the harness. Point the bulb connector toward the outside of the car and insert it into the housing then turn it 90 degrees so it is pointing down. Then connect the harness.
Gayla DGaia I recently read comments on this issue. People ended up going to a Toyota dealership due to bulb defects or something. Call your local Toyota. Should be free of charge.
Excellent video. I changed all the bulbs on the driver’s side without removing the bumper cover. I changed all the bulbs on the passenger side except for the side marker light without removing the bumper cover. To get that one, you need to follow the video. It helps to remove the radiator expansion tank to get at the bulbs on the passenger side. Two bolts to remove.
great video thanks for taking the time, Yes the bulbs can be changed with out removal but if need for replacement of whole light asm this is the way to do it. thanks again
Great video. You didnt go into detail about unscrewing all the fasteners but you did include things like bulb size and that hidden tab. i just changed my original assemblies because the light was dim and there was water in the headlights. When I took the old ones off I discovered that the mounts where the headlight bulbs actually get screwed into were cracked and broken. Thats why my headlights were so dim.
thanks a million this helped a lot I have to change the whole housing because is all fogged up from the sun and need to be changed I bought new housings and didn't know how to do it and watching your video taught me a thing or two the only thing is that mine is a 2012 Prius V , but I think is the same as the regular Prius , I will let you know how it went after I try to do it , thanks again
Just what I needed ! This Vid came up in my search for "Headlight Lens Replacement". I'm looking to Referb My Headlight System ...This vid covers that ... So this get me one step closer ( Always plan ahead ) : > Learn from others ! Thank You so much for putting this together for viewing ! Thumbs up from Me !
Thank you! I was able to do this in 1.5 hours and I didn't have to take whole bumper off because I was replacing just the passenger side headlight. I took off the recommended screws/clips. But forgot the middle one..lol, However, I realized the right side of the bumper could be pulled back, which allowed me to access the headlight fine. It was a bit tricky to get it back in, but it worked out. I also agree, these bulbs on the passenger side are very difficult to change, which is the reason why I had to replace the headlight. I put the bulb in wrong and it melted the plastic housing around it. Again, Thanks!
I have the exact same situation. So you were able to replace the passenger side housing without removing the bumper? Any other tips you could recommend. I’d like to give this a try.
Thank you so much for this video! My brother thanks you! Good call on the clip, my bro did not watch this part of the video....but I did. Which saved us a each a headache.
Thank you very much for this video since no one shows a third generation Prius headlamp R & R. I was able to change the driver's side OK but the passenger side front marker bulb I was able to change in the car but the side marker bulb ... dropped two bulbs into the housing and never was able to seat the lamp socket. Now I know what I going to do this weekend.
Excellent vid. Needed this to get to installing led strips to top of headlight assembly. Also might be a good idea to disconnect negative terminal on 12v battery too.
I changed the passenger side bulbs without removing the headlight, was not easy but doable. This guide is still useful for when I want to install LED bulb though.
Only issue was I couldn't get the bulbs for the blinkers out of the old assemblies and my bumper is damaged so I had to improvise and duct tape it back but everything is where you said it was so thanks, great tutorial!
Great video for explanation on changing entire headlight assembly. BUT, changing only the bulbs is much less work; just unscrew the couple of bolts holding the coolant reservoir, then bend that up and out of the way.
Thank you for the great video. After cutting the top of my hands while attempting to change the passenger low beam and breaking off a new bulb causing the glass part of the bulb to fall inside the headlight assembly I needed to take off the bumper.. Yes tedious, but the only way to move forward. Thanks again.
This is great. I'm looking at replacing my Prius headline assembly because one keeps getting moisture on the inside. I'm thinking of replacing them with black interior rather than the chrome it currently has. Also thinking of switching the low beam to an LED. Thanks for posting this video. I'm thinking this would go easier as a two man job. I'll definitely be using this video as a guide .
Tip for the passenger side: partially remove the front bumper by unclipping the top panels and also the passenger wheelwells (1 10mm bolt and 1 clip). Headlight has 3 screws (2 top, the other is accessible by pulling down on the bumper to expose the side bolt. This is why you need to partially loosen the bumper), move the headlight unit an inch or two forward and this gives you access from behind to install the led bulb. The protruding coolant tank bracket makes install impossible, which is the reason for moving the headlight forward. Your welcome
Lol. the appropriate title should have been headlight assembly replacement and not bulb replacement. It took me 20 seconds to replace my burnt low beam bulb.
I moved a couple things to replace the bulbs and was able to get my hand in the passenger side. I needed to replace the lenses now that one found a rock at high speed. So thank you have been squeezing my hands to get bulbs in now I am sure I can the bulb without touching it.
You did a whole dry run before shooting the video..bravo sir. And an excellent tutorial as well. ("I don't think the wife notices these things"- hilarious)
Welcome back! You make great videos with perfect explanations. Hope to see more soon! Perhaps you can do an update video of the E and maybe the Jag? I may have missed what happened to the Jag.
Thanks a lot i was just looking for this. I have changed quite a few headlamps in mine and my mates Prius-es but this stupid parking light bulb just popped out and now inside the light I will be taking whole light out tomorrow to try to get it out from High Beam hole.
I don't know why you have to go through all that trouble. I managed to replaced all my parking, high & low beam lights with LED ones WITHOUT removing the bumper. you don't even need to remove the coolant reservoir to make room. Just stick your hand in there and get it done! Literally took me 15 min, easy
On my 2008 prius I can remove all the top screws including the one in the wheel well. The bumper pops out, leans out forward and you can access all the rest to get the headlamps out. There are many screws on the bottom of 2008 bumper, so it saves a lot of time and very little time spent fitting it back into place. One video on youtube a women mechanic does it in about 5 minutes.
Dude, why did you do so much work? If you are just replacing the bulbs, you can reach right in and disconnect the wires and remove the bulb assemblies. I get it if you wanted a different style enclosure, but you didn't do that. Page 474 of your manual explains it super simply. You remove one screw and move a hose out of the way. I can't believe people have liked this video.
Cabby Cabby he said he couldnt fit his hand back there, thats why he did it duh! And also teaches us ppl that Don’t know too much bout cars how to do get r done! Duuuh
Cabby Cabby, spoken like someone who either has REALLY small hands, or has never done it. I have the exact same car, I moved the coolant expansion tank and air input snorkle out of the way AND COULD NOT REACH the side parking light bulb! The others yes, but not that one. I appreciate this video.
Usually im all love for these type of videos. But honestly this is doing more harm than good. I wonder how many people watched this and believed they needed to take everything off when this is a 1 minute job... WOW lol
@@DaveSwart shove your hand back there. there is a few videos of people doing it on youtube. If you NEED to, take off the hose and coolant... they only take a min. Messing with those bumper tabs and stuff is just asking for trouble imo
@@austinthrowsstuff Oh I see the videos. And it's not the hose that's the issue. It's the metal part that the headlamp bolts to that gets in my way. I have relatively small hands and getting to that PASSENGER side bulb - well I guess not so much getting to it, but RE-INSTALLING it. Getting it lined up perfectly, at the required "rotation," and twisting it in place is nearly impossible.
Thank you! Just what I needed to give me the push to do this myself! (Now where do I get those little plastic tabs that snap of if you aren't super gentle :) )
I love this video! So I tried to replace the passenger headlight on my 2010 prius. I had a hard time getting my hand in there, but somehow I was able to. I just couldn't get the bulb to lock in place. I took it to the dealer for an oil change and asked them to look at it. They said the bulb wouldn't lock because the headlight assembly was cracked and wanted over $600 to fix it. I said no thanks. I watched this video and bought a new headlight assembly from www.rockauto.com for around $100 and was able to replace it myself. It was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be and now my passenger side headlight works!
It looks like Gen3 have an extra spot for another LED or Halogen light bulb to go into. It looks like Toyota cover it up with white plastic . In your video I see it between the High Beam and the Low Beam. Correct me if I'm wrong here?
Thanks for the great video on how to replace the headlight assembly, but passenger side bulb can be replace with ease without removing the front bumper cover But thanks anyways great video
Thank-you ! I also have a 2010 Prius option 4 with the Solor Panel roof . I also have the factory fog lights . Toyota installed it but they took my car Billy down the street without my permission. now my headlight harness is burnt out . since the Prius headlight are crap anyway I'm looking to get a high quality headlights .
Thank you for this video. Can you please tell me whether I should buy Toyota headlamp assembly parts or if I can buy from an online parts store? Thank you in advance for any suggestions.
OMGSH thank you for this! Passenger side was ridiculous, still can't fit driver side bulb back into housing, likely gonna have to remove the whole thing to get a good look at it. Sheesh!
Went back this morning and completely removed the bumper (except for wiring). Barely managed to install drivers' side low beam (housing is slightly damaged). Would have cost $90 at the dealership (and my satisfaction of a completed job), so thank you very much!
I replaced them without taking anything off it just took some time. if you can touch it you can take it out. I am also very good with my hands the passenger side could use a few parts out shown in other videos. like the washer reservoir and air intake if you can't get the bumper back in a mechanic will rob you.
The regular h11 and brights on both sides can be changed without doing any of this... But they blow out a lot.. I've never had a car that blew up head lights as much as this Prius..... I'm less than 2 years into it and have gone through at least 30 bulbs
If you twist your hand (up to your elbow) the right way, you could get your fingers In just right to put the bulb in. You need to move the air intake hose, which you can do with no tools (i believe). Also, put the wiring on the bulb before installing the bulb. In such a tight place, it will be impossible to put the wiring on after you install the bulb. I've done it 4 times without taking anything apart. This won't work for anyone with large hands.
Hi. I need to replace just the bumper. What is entailed with removing the fog lamps from the existing bumper? I want to get a replacement bumper from the Internet.
Question for you sir! Where did you get your replacement lamp assemblies and have they worked out since 2015? Mine chews through bulbs monthly if not 3 weeks. The drivers side lens is clearly marred, melted, burnt in some way. the pattern is off and overall it's half the light output of passenger side. Looking at replacements. Hope it's going well and hope to hear about your supplier. Cheers!
If you don't insert the new headlight bulb correctly, only two of the three tabs mate, causing the bulb to be tilted inside the housing. Unfortunately, this hot bulb now points too close to the plastic housing and melts it, which is probably what happened to you. Sorry.
