Ok first of all you are a life saver. I really just didn't realize how damn thick that snap ring was. I thought maybe I was just babying it too much to get it out. And I was like how are my snap ring pliers so wimpy??? Now I get it seeing it is a quarter of an inch thick.
Thanks for the video! yes that retainer is a little tricky to get out. I think the retainer that's supposed to keep that nut from backing out is a dumb idea loctite and tightening to 210 foot pounds which is the manufacturer spec there is no way the pinion that should be able to back out. The best way I found out removing that retainer is using a drill bit or a reamer tool to remove the rust in the hole around the nut to allow that retainer to get loose enough to come out. The tolerances are so tight the rust will keep it from sliding out easily. Hope this helps anyone in the future. Just get a close look at it with your eyes.
It turned out it WAS NOT the pinion nut being loose that was making the noise. It's the pinion bearings probably damaged because of the factory fix failure
For the retaining pinion nut recall for the set screws :1. Using an inch pound torque wrench, 3/32 HEX-BIT tighten each of the set screws on the pinion nut retainer ring in 5 in. lbs. increments, alternating back and forth (Figure 52). Continue alternating back and forth increasing the torque on the torque wrench by 5 in. lbs. until 45 in. lbs. (5 N·m) is obtained on both set screws. CAUTION: Failure to alternate between the two set screws during the tightening process will cause pinion nut retainer ring damage. CAUTION: The supplied hex-bits will be stressed to their limit during the tightening process. Do not exceed 45 in. lbs. (5 N·m), hex-bit breakage will occur. It is not uncommon for the hex-bit to break occasionally when the tightening torque reaches 45 in. lbs. (5 N·m). If the hex-bits continuously break during installation, have your torque wrench calibration checked and adjusted as required. 2. Install the propeller shaft into position. Install new propeller shaft retaining bolts and tighten them to 85 ft. lbs. (115 N·m). Cheers!! .
Ahhhh just torque it to spec. You can even use a mid grade impact nothing extremely powerful I got a craftsman 275ft lb max torque impact it’s got 2 settings low impact and max torque fast impacting. I set it to setting 1 and impacted the nut until it just stopped turning because I was certain that was around 210FTLBS, or a little over. I left it alone. Being a home mechanic having a lot of vehicles old muscle to large heavy duty rigs, I have experience. While I was trying to torque the nut with my torque wrench (truck was on the ground) it just made the yolk flange move and the truck roll back and forth (I had rear wheels chalked obviously) it didn’t work… because… I had to have the truck on jackstands 🤦🏻♂️so I just grabbed the small impact and torqued it with that put it all back together. I’d say max torque on that impact is over 300FTLBS. It’s a good deal it’s a nice impact. It feels like it torques the bolts a bit more than 275ftlbs.
@@chrisoconnell9416 I don’t got a crush spacer cause I got a 2003 ram it’s just the bolt. Ahh I don’t mind exceeding the torque spec not by a shit ton but, when the nut never been touched before it’s tighter than 210LBs for sure.
Ha, wow so the recall didn't even fix it. Bought mine same year except 2wd and just heard this weird noise happen today and believe I have the same issue. The recall was supposedly completed 2016, and I got my truck in 2017 I believe so after it was supposedly fixed which it wasn't. Gonna replace rear pinion gear, bearing kit, front and rear u joints and rear tranny seal
I tried to get them dodge to cover the repair due to the faulty pinion nut but they said my milage was the cause of bearing failure not the pinion nut. I was barely @ 150,000 i think
It is kinda tight in there. It has teeth on the outside of it to help it grab and not turn. Mine was difficult to get out the 1st time as well. You have to pull back and forth a little and side to side to slide it out. Did you remove the tiny set screws ?
@@Lalonde79 how can I remove this screws ? I broke 2 Allen wrenches they are super thight I went and got a Allen socket and the damn thing broke inside the screw!
@@chrisoconnell9416 so i try to use my drill on the screws to remove them but the lock is thick! I kinda want to use the grinder to shave them off but I'm 5 inches away from the full gas tank any ideas?
I decided to bite the bullet and get the recall work done on my '05 1500 4x4 I had no problems no leaks nothing no noise was even coming from it just rather be safe than sorry so I took it and they said it would be free because of the recall I get a call later on saying that the opinion seal on mine is bad and when the truck came in they said it wasn't leaking but now it's leaking in that I have to cover the cost of the seal which only cost like 10 20 bucks but they want me to pay $155 they said if I don't get it done basically they will just fill the fluid back up and it will probably leak out and eventually my rear end will lock up they told me it wasn't leaking when I came in but they also said the recall work has nothing to do with the seal so I'm not sure how it's leaking now and they also told me that the opinion seal is not included in the recall I spoke to somebody at Chrysler customer care and they want me to submit the invoice and the price of it and said they might reimburse me for it I look down Google and found that many other people have the same problem they took their truck and they get recall work done and they were told the same thing that they needed to replace their seal I got the idea to call Dodge from some people on the forum now that I'm looking up videos on the whole job and everything I see people that got the recall fixed done and they didn't have a failure until after the recall fix was done I told the dealership that was working on my vehicle that they should have disclosed that in the beginning that basically hey if we do the recall the seal might need replaced
They have to remove the yoke to do the factory recall. They are pulling the yoke thru the seal. That should 100% be covered. These dealers are getting chicken sh!t with their coverage. I don't understand how they get away with that.
@@chrisoconnell9416 that's what I thought they said the recall did not disturb the seal and that it wasn't leaking when I brought it in but the seal is not covered but that's why I started looking up videos I usually do the work myself on my truck but figured if it's free why not everytime I have went to a shop the quoted price is always off from what I end up paying I usually ask them to what their rate is and price all the parts out myself to make sure hopefully dodge does reimburse me waiting to pick up my truck at the moment and already called Dodge and they sent me the email and said to send in a copy of the invoice and payment so they can see if they can reimburse me they said it's no guarantee
Ok, i guess they are not pulling the yoke to clean the threads like i did. I didn't want to screw a new nut on with loctite still in the threads. I guess they just pull the plastic nut, replace it with a steel one and install the lock ring without ever removing the yoke
@@chrisoconnell9416 makes sense how could they tell my seal is bad just by putting the retaining nut kit on though is that even possible to tell the condition the seal is in without pulling the yoke I didn't have any noise or problems with it just wanted to get the recalls done probably my mistake in the first place lol
I had to use snap ring pliers. I couldn't hold the camera and do the pliers at the same time. You have to compress it with the snap ring pliers and work back and forth at the same time while gently pulling. It is difficult but will eventually slide out
Ok I should have taken a picture but the snap ring is co.pletely bond up. Like there is no room to compress it together it's literally bound up and I can't get a socket on it to move the nut. I'm thinking I may have bigger problems than I bargained for
well that sucks! Hey Chris, did they cover the repair due to the recall?, (I think its P77 recall). My 05 is humming and not sure its a wheel bearing or this same issue, slight leak from pinion seal. If its a bad pinion bearing I assume they cover it...…….Thx
Sorry guys, no they did not cover any of the repairs. The job cost me $1,100 for the dealer to fix it with mopar parts ( original equipment manufacturer ) This was however the first major repair that i had to do to that truck and I've been driving it for 10 years.
I was pleasantly surprised that the dealer only charged $1,100 for that job. They replaced the carrier bearings, pinion bearings, wheel seals, and pinion seal. Plus synthetic lube and limited slip additive
I'm not sure on that one. You can call your dealership service department and they can look that information up for you. I have a 2015 as well but have not had to work on it yet
I don't remember the specific torque on those. I believe it was 60 foot pounds but i could be wrong. Any dodge service advisor should be able to look that up for you.
