What these games mean to Canada... Stephen Brunt from the Globe and Mail sends in a Video Essay to CTV. htttp://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/opinions/columnists/stephen-brunt/ Ending Song: Red Heart by "Hey Rosetta", Thanks viremarthius
I don't know, it's hard to say. I would imagine if you made a mistake and didn't do your best, you would feel that way. If you gave your all and still lose, you'd feel better than if you had the chance and bad luck or a momentary lapse of concentration ruined for you. I don't remember watching her so I can't say more For example, I missed an open net in an important hockey tournament to us native people in Ontario for a minor hockey kids called Little Native Hockey league (yes even though its only a week long tournament). It could have made us lose out on a chance to be in the championship game but luck was on our side with the tiebreaking system. The thought feels less bad knowing we still won the tournament but I would be thinking about that non goal forever would it have ended up catastrophic. 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️. Still do but I can laugh as opposed to cry. I hope she found peace.
Another torontonian here who has been touched by this and people's responses. This was a surprisingly historic and pivotal event in our growth as a country; I hope we cherish it and pass onto generations to come
I’m here watching it 11 years later in Jan 2021. As I sit here with my 11 yr old Labrador, who was just a young puppy when I walked around Vancouver with her in Feb 2010 greeting visitors, I have tears in my eyes. Great memories!
I was fortunate enough to get to go to the 2010 Olympics and I got to say that Canada did an amazing job. I'm an American and all of the Canadians made us feel so welcome, I absolutely love going to Canada and the pride of the Canadians shined through the hospitality was just amazing from us forgetting a backpack at a restraunt and having someone come find us and tell us we had forgotten it everything was amazing. I will never forget these Olympics
I remember standing on my feet everytime a Canadian athlete was going for a medal that year. (Except when an American was going for it too) there was something different going on during those Olympics. I can't describe it, but honestly one of the most entertaining 2 sports weeks I have ever witnessed
The Vancouver 2010 Olympics will remain in my memories forever. Never have I ever experienced such unity, and such an outpouring display of pride among the poeple. It truely was an amazing, and uforgetable experience that I will always cherish, I get emotional just thinking of the wonderful experiences I had. I have never been more proud to be a Vancouverite, and more importantly a CANADIAN. God I love my hometown and country.
Born in Canada but now American, I still have great pride in my homeland, especially when it comes to the ice. What a great experience it was watching these games seeing Canadians take pride in such a wonderful land. Stand proud Canada, especially for your troops who sacrifice so much and ask for very little.
As an American I still look back at these olympic games with fondness. These olympics games were phenomenal and I loved watching Canada, their country, citizens, and athletes!
I remember watching this on CBC and thinking how perfectly Stephen brunt captured the essence of what was going on. I was lucky enough to be at the Olympics for a week. What an incredible experience, and an incredible pice of journalism
Canada keepin' that swagger going 4 years later in Sochi. I believe the winter Olympics in Vancouver propelled the Canadian team to greatness for years to come. I hope some of the athletes have seen this video essay, what a way to get pumped.
Came back to watch this absolute banger of a video essay again, after watching Stephen's latest masterpiece about Sports returning after COVID..... this guy is an artist man.
The athletes have been the bravest to endure the pain of their bodies, the impact on their lives and families, and to accept the pressure of expectation by an entire nation. The people of Vancouver and all Canadians, have shared an incredibble bond of togetherness, they wore their hearts, their beloved Maple Leafs of Canadian pride on their shirts and gloves,,, and by that they have created a framework of Believe, Hope, Trust and National Identity. That will be forever the legacy of Vancouver.
This montage was so wonderfully made and narrated. I've watched it multiple times and it never fails to bring tears to my eyes. I'm Chinese born in Canada, living in Vancouver. Never have I been more proud of my country.
Most amazing 17 days of my life! The emotion were amazing! I'm American and was so proud of my country and of Canada! I was lucky to attend and Canada did an amazing job welcoming us!
This video encapsulates everything I felt perfectly! The Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics were the best thing to ever happen to this city and this country! Thanks so much for this awesome video essay!
Even 7 1/2 months later, this video still gives me chills and makes me incredibly proud to be Canadian and to have been part of the Games as a volunteer. It was an amazing 2 weeks, and will be something that I will cherish forever!
The most amazing video of the most amazing time of my life. I live in the US and I love California but I am Canadian to the core. Living here and realizing the things I never knew about Canada and how amazing we were is an incredibly emotional thing. The Olympics gave me a chance to celebrate the greatest country in the world.
i live in vancouver and the olympics was the most amazing experience of my life. it never made me so proud to be canadian, and it was the opportunity to hug random strangers, burst into O canada for no particular reason and everyone joins in with you, seas of red and white wherever you go and every street covered in olympic spirit! i had the honour off seeing alexandre bilodeau win his gold medal at an awards ceremony and i honestly say i'm proud to have witnessed history in that moment! :)
We were SO proud of ALL our Olympians!! So many special moments... Rochette's bronze, Women's and Men's hockey gold medals, Jon Montgomery's Famous jug of beer!! He earned that beer, just like our Lady's hockey team did! OMG!! Canada did SO well!
Having been born and lived over half my life in England, I have now lived in Canada for 21 years and am PROUD to call myself CANADIAN!!!!!! I love this video and I think it has made many Canadians realize what I already know, Canada is a GREAT country to live in and be a citizen of. GO CANADA GO!!!!!!!!
I volunteered during the Games and it was the most amazing two weeks of my life! Even today, I still come back and watch this video to remember being a part of this amazing event in this amazing country! Thank you for posting this!
What an amazing 17 days for a great nation. Thank you to The Olympics for giving us a platform on which to show the world who we really are, and how beautiful our land is...and thank you to the game of Hockey for keeping the fire in our hearts burning stronger than ever!!! I LOVE MY COUNTRY & ALL YOU CANADIANS!!! Let's keep this spirit alive:)
When it feels like everything is backwards not only in Canada but the whole world, I need to come back to this video and feel the love and hope we had back then. Was really a special time for our Country.
A perfect capture to a perfect games - only missing piece is Sid the Kid's golden goal. But this video journal was done before that I think. Excellent work Mr. Brunt.
I hope that the pride, and joy, and patriotism will carry on. Like Mr. Brundt said, "the swaggar was always there just waiting for the right moment". A great Olympics. A great memory.
GREAT essay! Thanks Stephen for expressing so eloquently, what we feel inside. Your heart-string-pulling words are very prescient. Memories and feelings of the 2010 games to last a lifetime; hope the good from this once-in-a lifetime event doesn't just fade away. Was this fantastical event all just a dream? Im surprised this essays been viewed only 55,000X (Mar4 midday). All Canadians should see this video essay and hopefully be touched by it. Spread the word. I am so proud to be Canadian!
WHOO-HOOOOO! finally the video loaded properly and i got to see it!!! i really hope ctv doesn't remove it - canadians worldwide are proud too!!!! sooo glad i saw this - thanks again!
My friend showed me this video, excitedly informing me that I make an appearance in it! Even if it's for less than a second, I'm honored to appear in such an amazing piece! Those 2 weeks were filled with amazing experiences that I'll never forget and despite now living in the states, the patriotism that was born as a result will never die.
thank-you : this is sooo perfect. I remember they aired this right after the game and before the closing. Torontonians as well are sharing this sense of bewilderment and 'postpodium depression' (Gary Mason, Globe and Mail). It's uniting to know we all feel the same way now. How do we keep the fire alive?
Haha, I had tears watching this video. I miss the Winter Olympics so much! So glad that I was there to experience it. It was amazing! Unforgettable. Proud to be Canadian!
Great essay by Stephen, and I would like to say that those were the most exciting, proud and amazing 17 days. The best thing to cap the entire Olympics off right was winning double gold in Hockey, while we also won double gold in Hockey in Salt Lake as well. Nothing better than beating our rival American counterparts.
Love this video. I live in Vancouver and the atmosphere was amazing, spontaneous signing of the national anthem on the street, as a Canadian I had never experience that kind of nationalism before. We are proud to be Canadian and it was wonderful to finally show it.
absolutely amazing video. Hey Rosetta! at the end was definitely a good choice. Red Heart would be the perfect unofficial anthem for these Games. Let's hope it catches on.
