Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura finished a disappointing 4th-5th (tied with Boris Gelfand) in Moscow at his first World Blitz Championship, but this game was a notable win in the home stretch as he busted out the Muzio Gambit variation of the King's Gambit and defeated World Junior Champion Dimitry Andreikin of Russia. The tournament was won by Levon Aronian, with Teimour Radjabov (2nd), Magnus Carlsen (3rd). Lots more videos on ChessVibes.com

Best Videography..the maker of the video should put a video course on youtube on how to make chess videos, This is fantastic compared to so many other crappily shot live chess videos. It's showing the clock+ faces+board+2nd board diagram all at the same time....all while the original board is at perfect angle. A++++

Love how Naka looks up before pushing 2.f4. Ain't no going back. He's probably the only Super GM with balls enough to play the King's Gambit...let alone the Muzio line. Insane confidence!
@rRunner266
@rRunner266 7 лет назад
Paul West No, 2.f4 is perfect for a blitz game, Nakamura was just lucky Andreikin accepted to play such a sharp position with black. If anyone is confident here, it's Andreikin.
@Jalapablo
@Jalapablo 7 лет назад
rRunner266 I know but if 2. f4 were that perfect more super GMs would push it during blitz. It just seems too risky at this level. That said, I would love to see Naka get some GM scalps with the Latvian.
@v1das007
@v1das007 7 лет назад
What's considered "too risky" for a very long time might not be so risky anymore. I believe most of the GMs simply don't know the lines too well and avoid them, because they rarely face it. Nakamura is getting profit because of that. If more GMs would play it, after a burst of some exciting games, most likely it would lose popularity again after a while( Nakamura would start avoiding it as well). It's not bravery, it's a gamble - does Andreikin know the old lines?
@v1das007
@v1das007 7 лет назад
To clarify my opinion, I don't want to take away anything from Nakamura. It is exciting what he is doing, but it's not as crazy or "brave" as it might look, I believe. Just a sort of strategy.
@rRunner266
@rRunner266 7 лет назад
If you're willing to keep up with obscure-opening-theory which isn't of any value in your classical games and if it's your style to "shock" an opponent, then yes , 2.f4 is perfect. But as it happens there are chessplayers not interested in learning long non-valuable obscure opening lines and their style is just to outplay the opponent without long theory lines. That's why 2.f4 isn't played more often by (super) GMs and this is why Naka isn't brave, he is hiding behind theory, whereas others accept non-theoretical fights to show their real chess-skill. Naka is just a gambler, as v1das007 pointed out nicely.

Justin Ferriman Elite players know enough to get at least a completely fine position against obscure opening lines like the king's gambit. Black isn't even forced to accept the gambit. Chess has evolved, so in classical games, these lines belong to the past. I agree with you that it would be great fun to see it being played, maybe one day...

It's the Muzio Gambit, and it's a lot of fun. With so much pressure on f7 early on into the game, Black can fall int so many traps, many of which involving fantastic sacrifices. There was a lovely game between Shirov and Lapinski in 1990 that is definitely something to behold.

+Oussama Ashkar why cant Nxd4 be played after Naka's Nd5??
@MrDannyg77
@MrDannyg77 8 лет назад
+jorn torenbosch well that's just it, he can. If black plays Nxd4 I assume that Naka had already studied the line and had a continuation. Black plays instead, Kd8 and Naka immediately plays c3. That tells me that a possible line after Nd5 (the big balls move), this is what he might have had in mind. 1. Nd5, Nxd4 2. Qc3, Bg7 3. Bxf4!, Ne2+ 4. Bxe2, Bxc3 5. bxc3, c6 6. Nc7+, etc. But who would go into that line! Naka, that's who!
@MrDannyg77
@MrDannyg77 8 лет назад
I'll add one more thing. If you put this game to a computer program and go through the moves, it's simply mind blowing how each player seems to play the best move so often. It's easy to watch a game like this and not truly realize just how good these players are.

Sadly here on youtube too many people are quick to moan about nakas so-called "antics" at the table. For me he's like a breath of fresh air because he always takes risks and plays to win come what may. Iv'e stopped going to chess tournaments due to the huge amount of boring draws. But if naka is there then if i can i attend as i'm sure to see fireworks. At this moment in time (april 2014) he's 7th in the world. (No small feat in itself). If only the top players below and above him would drop their fear of losing and play riskier chess like naka i think chess as a sport would have at least double the popularity it has now . . .
