Detailed video on how to drain your coolant/antifreeze, then remove and install a new thermostat on the 2011 Ford Edge 3.5 and 3.7 duratec engine. The choice of coolant is the Peak 50/50 extended life antifreeze/coolant. In order to preserve your water pump and help prevent failure I recommend a more aggressive and frequent change of the coolant/antifreeze. Changing it about every two years and no more than 60K miles has worked for me and I have had no water pump failures. Frequent oil changes may also play a factor into the theory.
The thermostat was changed not do to failure, but mileage and as a preventative measure.
Carquest part # 14138 for the thermostat

Lovely video. well executed. Here is my concern: The total amount replaced was 4qts. The TOTAL VOLUME in the Edge is 12qts ! I worry that only replacing 1/3 of the total volume is insufficient. The water pump replacement will take me 3 days if it pops its cork, so total replacement would make me sleep easier.

Thanks MACT. I have used Haynes manuals for years and they have been very helpful, especially before RU-vid. But the one for my wife's 012 EDGE said to ''attach a rubber hose to this drain fitting to direct the coolant into the drain pan. Loosen the fitting 1/4 turn, then pull it out. May need to use pliers''. I'm glad I didn't break it.... thanks to you! Perhaps they are talking about an older model?

newer engines are designed to operate at a higher temperatures due to emissions. changing your thermostat or radiator cap to a different specification or having a leak in the cooling system can dramatically affect this temperature. changing this temperature will mean that the OEM system cannot operate correctly. so the old school method changing a thermostat or removing a thermostat will actually hurt your power output. more than likely throw a check engine light or or cause other engine problems. the only other way to check coolant is to use the proper tools and check for efficiency and acid content. changing it every 6 years is a good idea. leaving old or bad coolant and system can cause radiator , water pump and other failures

I just got a 2011 Ford Edge SEL that has 147,000 miles on it. Not certain if they've ever changed the coolant. Would you recommend an initial flush and then do a simple change every 60,000 miles?

I've seen other videos fill the radiator after draining. Is it necessary?

Hello MACT. Do you still using the peak 50/50 long life in your Edge? Im going to change the coolant very soon to my 2011 Edge sport...!

MACT, do you have any oil loss between oil changes? I'm losing about 1 qt over 5,000 miles now with our 2019 Edge with 150K and I'm wondering if I'm going to lose the engine soon...

HOW OFTEN? >> Haynes Repair Manual says: "Cooling system servicing (draining, flushing and refilling) should be done every 30,000 miles or 24 months." [Haynes Repair Manual for All models Ford Edge '07-'19 & Lincoln MKX '07-'18 | manual #: 36014-9X2]

I just finished Scotty's clip talking about how bad our engine is due to the water pump is chain driven and its mount inside the engine (fainted). Got all paranoid about what happen if my water pump failed when i drive on the highway and i came across your clip. You just pulled the most amazing speech about water pump "maintenance is the key (17:01) change coolant frequently" this speech gives me hope. Perhaps I missed it in your clip, but do you mind share with me again your coolant change interval?? I really don't want to follow factory manual's instruction. The interval just seems too long to actually prolong mechanical engine part.

sorry or dark green?
@MACTFordEdge

Seems for the most part only Ford sells dark green. The peak is stated to meet the Ford requirements independent of dark green or green coloring. I do not always go with Ford fluids for my fluid replacements. The previous fluid drained out was universal fluid from a quick lube shop I frequent.
