Ford Edge 3.5 Duratec Thermostat replacement and coolant flush

While using the OBDLinks MX bluetooth engine engine analyzer and the FORSCAN LITE and TORQUE PRO apps to monitor the systems on both of my 2011 Ford Edge Limited's I discovered that the 2011 Ford Edge my wife drives was running engine coolant temps around 207 degrees F. My Edge was consistently running 195-198 degrees F.
I knew I had not changed the coolant and was unsure of the past maintenance. I decided to make a simple thermostat change to see if the thermostat was the issue or was it the coolant? The results of changing the thermostat definitely made the difference in the temps as it was running running equal to my other Edge after the change.
The thermostat for the 3.5 is a 180 degree F thermostat that was a Carquest part purchased from Carquest. Please note that Carquest is now Advance Auto Parts. I guess the Carquest brand has been purchased by Advance Auto Parts.

I then took the Edge to have the entire coolant system vacuum flushed and refilled with new global coolant at Xpress Lube Plus in Davenport Iowa. This shop is great and I have been using their services for over ten years.

After the flush and new thermostat the engine is now running cool and staying within the operating temperatures equal to my other Ford Edge.

Great video. Was wondering what app or whatever it was that you had on you iPhone that showed you the temp and a bunch of other things. I didn't see what they were but would love to know how I can get that set up for my edge. (2010 limited)

The phone is an android phone and the app is the OBDLinks MX Bluetooth. As of right now not sure if they have updated the FORScan app to work with Iphone. The program used is called FORSCAN LITE

Quick question about this flush you don't need to bleed the system? Also how would you know that the heater core is failed I'm not getting any heat in the car but the temperature gauge is reading fine it's not cold or overheating so I'm not sure if I should change the thermostat or should I try to flush the heater core

Thanks for the video Mac T. I had to replace my thermostat on a Ford Edge too but I can't get rid of the air pocket on the cooling system. Any advice thanks in advance

Did the shop you patronized use a cooling system cleaner at any time or did they just suck out the old and replace it with new?

No chemical flush was performed. The system they used reverse flushes the fluid out by vacuum. Then it is refilled. I did not feel there was a need to do a lengthy chemical flush. The issue was primarily the thermostat.

For DIYers, I go old school ! Drain fluid, refill with clean water and your favorite flush (I like Prestone). Go for a drive, say 30 minutes. Drain refill with clean water, Go for another 30 minute drive. Drain refill with clean water, Yes, this is a DOUBLE RINSE because you can never get all of the old coolant out of the block; Drain. Fill with the "correct" coolant. Keep the empty bottle. Straight NOT pre-mixed. Drive it for a day or 2 and then check the concentration of the coolant. It will likely be over concentrated so remove some (put it in that empty bottle) and replace it with fresh water. All Ford cooling systems have a remote mount reservoir, NOT an overflow or "burp" tank. Filling the system with the engine running through this tank will mean that you should be very close to having the correct amount of fluid. Double check in a couple of days.

Could you explain about the smart phone instrument gauge APP? IPhone or Android ?

I am currently working on a video showing reviewing the OBDII device and the APP that I am using. In short it connects via bluetooth using the Forscan or Torque apps available on google play.
