Thank you so much for this video. This happened at 11pm last night over an hour away from my home after an event. I was lucky and after having the car off while researching the power steering info, I turned the car back on, the code had cleared and I was able to at least drive home. All the recall info about the power steering assist in the comments below is worth checking out if you have just seen this viedo. Thank you again for creating a specific video to explain this problem and spark a further conversation.
My 2010 is doing the same thing.... on my 3rd rack an pinion. 800 just for the part. That seems to be the issue. But its currently only lasting around a year or 2 before it has to be changed out again... nothing but a money guzzler for me....
(TRY THIS) 2010 ford fusion, power steering locked up, first thing I tried was unhooking the battery cables for 10 min to reset it, didn't work. The next day took it to a random car shop and asked them to clear the power steering codes, which they did for FREE and it only took them 15 min..BOOM, power steering instantly unlocked.. Words cant describe how thankful I was.. Literally saved me $2000. Hope this helps someone.
As it's an electric steering rack it's actually an electric issue , look up your wiring diagram for the vehicle and find out if the main power should be 3 or 4 main wires (not data cables ) have power they should read 12v normally as they are live wires . If those wires are testing correctly then you have a bad rack most likely (electric power steering motor ) electric systems can fail with out warning and alot of vehicles now a days have electric powersteering
My 2011 Fusion...power assist fault light came on today at 155,025 miles, no power steering. I did pull the battery ground cable off for 5 minutes...to clear all codes! Then cleaned the positive and negative battery posts..had copper green crude under the clamps. Reconnected cables and started the car....power steering works just fine again. Thanks here to poster "Research Ross McIntyre" for his suggestion. IT WORKED FOR ME! I will update on how long this fix works when I drive it for a while!
The Ford EPS is crap! The connect/ reconnect of battery worked a couple of times...for weeks, But....the Ford system set a Permanent disable code so there is no power steering at all now. The dealer says I must buy entire new rack and pinion assembly for $1595, repair and reprogramming will total $2378. This does not include the full rebuild of front ball joints and new tie rod ends....which may be binding and actually cause a huge amount of extra effort to steer the car. This extra resistance and binding can cause the electric servo motor in the EPS to draw a lot more voltage/ amps and cause huge amount of extra heat, shorting out the electric motor or the electronic board ECM in the steering rack. Like it's been said by other experts, Ford knows this EPS was defective and overheating on it's brand new cars. All the new Fords are using electric power steering....trucks and cars. NO MORE FORDS FOR ME!
Thank you!!!! Wifes 2012 2.5l is making noises. I look for the reservoir for low fluid and I can’t find the reservoir. Huh, maybe because their isn’t one???? I never knew this....never really heard of this tbh....all my vehicles have had a traditional power steering setup......was tired of looking for that damn reservoir in the Michigan winter.......
Having the same issue. Called the dealership & they said there's a recall on the Power Steering Reprograming, as well as the Fuel Tank & Canister Purge Valve Inspection & Repair. Recall Codes: 15S18 & 15S34 Hope this helps!
Thanks dude. I initially thought that cap just up and left from the dipstick was it, but no. Hilarious though…same dash and all…I even have a pic of my son in that exact same spot.
I have the same car and the steering light is on and the wheel is making some bumping noise when in park with engine on while turning the steering wheel silently back and fourth from right to left
I have a 2011 Ford Fusion SE.My steering is the opposite of yours mine is loose steering on the left side.I need to replace the steering angle sensor.I already bought the part just have to find a reasonably priced mechanic to replace it I also had the advance trac warning light on.
@@lateshataylor1528 I bought a generation 3 rack & pinion. That's not how it's spelled, sorry. Ford had issues and made 3 different versions. The Gen 3 is the newest. It cost me around $1500 to fix.
@@lateshataylor1528 I hope Ford does a recall because I'll get my money back. I don't know if they have yet tho. You should call your local Ford and ask. I hope this helps you. I got mine in 2010 and I love that car.
Having this same problem.. started yesterday. I saw there was a recall but ford is saying it’s not a recall for it only for the passenger air bag.. i have a 2012 Ford Fusion btw
I know this is 2 years later, but there is a recall for the 2011 Ford Fusion Power Steering Assist Fault. And it's not really the pump, it's the electric assist. Something about replacing or reprogramming a faulty module. There is also a note in the manual that says that may happen when you also get the Low Tire Pressure warning, which I saw you had.
My vehicle is doing that. I bought it from a cousin and have not put the title under my name yet.(It's been over 3 years) Would I call ford themselves?
This happened to me a week ago. Started it up and the fault message came on. Got quite an upper body workout to make it to my next stop. But after starting it up again it was back to normal and haven't had a problem since after driving 400 miles.
this happen to me twice! do to a bad rear tire having low pressure. all I did was take to ford and had them hook up and clear the codes. I wasn't paying over 2 grand to fix it and I hope a lot of you consider my comment and don't get it replaced if you don't have too! and ford will tell you " yea we tried it, it didn't work " then I go to my car and what do u know the steering will spun and it was fixed
There is no pump it's all electric power steering on the 4-cylinder in the small V6 so I'm not exactly sure but you have to change the whole rack and pinion because there's electric motor down there. My daughter's quit working two weeks ago same car how did you fix yours I see you this was 3 years ago
I had a bad abs right sensor om it it was bad but steering didn’t come back many codes no communication Tom top. Tryed relearn car beeped once then twice didn’t help. Still no steering. It was working then off and on now none Ugg
Gotta 2012 fusion. Rack and pinion, motor mounts, I guess that's wat I get for buying a gotdamn FORD!!!! This car's days is numbered it's a gotdamn deathtrap!!!!!

I have this problem and my car need tires alignment and balancing 😬 do you thinking’s why I already replace the rack and nothing the mechanic said it’s deprogrammed 😬 I don’t know but it’s make me crazy 😜
Hey there, you're right mine went out back in May 2019,just before the warranty expired ford fixed and got me a rental also. My son came in this morning and mom the power steering has messed up again. My heart dropped. So what with yours did it happen twice
Mine happened twice and Ford reused to fixed they said they don’t see anything wrong with it. I take it to a mechanic and they “fixed it” and was like I should be good but no. Now Ford says they can fix it but for $1,200 I was like oh hell no ! So I just gave up and got a new car I still have my Ford tho it turns on and everything. I tried to put power stealing fluid and nothing !
So my 2011 Ford fusion hybrid doesn't have a power steering pump doesn't have power steering fluid doesn't have an alternator a starter doesn't have none of that stuff so if yours is a Ford fusion hybrid how do you have that stuff cuz that's a kind of weird because I know for a fact mine does not have it that's why you hear nothing when you turn your car on it doesn't crank there's no alternator and no starter to make it crank it's all electric
After you fix either your battery or your tire problem you need to take your car to Ford and have them reset your computer and your light will be gone and it will work again
annie demaline when we got mine the person who had it before didn’t take it to get it fixed under the recall so now it’s at 175k and the recall ended at 150k so now I have to pay for it to be fixed and it’s expensive
Happened to me today right after I bought a new truck I was taking that car for a oil change before I sell it and when I stopped at a gas station it went out
Nicholas Jones don't know if you had this fix I had ford quote me the same thing on my wife 2013 ford escape went got a used test steering rack from car-parts.com cost me $200 me and my buddy swap it out in 3 hrs ford quoted 5-6 used a jack and 2 jack stands
Mine did that. I shut it off, didn't touch the steering wheel when I restarted and it went away. And it doesn't do that if you don't pull on the steering wheel when you start it.
To anyone having these issues if for some reason your car stears past coded steering angle it will shut off your power steering as a safety an just needs codes wiped.
What do u mean by that. my car was pulling to the left alot like it needed a alignment. Tire was low on air too. The light was on and it was still working until i turned the car off.
I'm dealing with the same issue & my car is also pulling to the left My tires are total shit & I need to get some new ones. I'm thinking the issue might be tire related
It's not easy. Requires dropping the sub-frame about 8 inches. Not a job for the faint of heart. I am doing mine right now and just finished lowering the sub frame. Ready to pull the rack out.
I’m gonna try and chalk this up to a module/computer/sensor/code issue…. Did you happen to have a low pressure tire message for a front wheel directly BEFORE the fault?
Drumkid330.... hello Are you saying the two has something to do with each other? I do have that message: low tire pressure and a tire shop says it's a sensor for my driver front tire. What is described in the video also happened to me earlier.
Yes.There’s a complicated “data” bus that is responsible for a lot of drivetrain capabilities. There are quite a few sensors that could put the whole system into fail safe mode if they detect. Problem such as tire pressure… meaning if a flat tire (primarily I The front) goes flat, the wheel speed sensors resoond by Disabling Advancetrac, and Power steering assist Ifyou check your fuse diagram, the passenger compartment has eps and stability control in the same fuse.
@@caseyholmes7921 if you take it to a dealer, make sure they perform a full ECU flash, before you let them talk you into replacing the whole rack and pinion
@@abumannocchi8048 hello, what do you mean? My dash has low tire pressure, tires has been check and tire shop says it's a sensor. What's described in the video has also happened to me as well today. Are you saying the two has something to do with each other?
See video blogger ..Carlos Auto Tech...2010 Fusion 2.5L..xx...codes nums. He explain how to resets the system and it will work it out and other tips in order to aviod it happens again
he can't get the air out because there is no air in an electrical system. he keeps talking about a pump that does not exist. there is only an electric motor and a series of sensors to activate it.
@@Badfinger991 10 years from purchase or 150,000 miles. Currently dealing with the same problem on 2012 fusion. All the ford dealerships in my area are booked up until next month.
there is no power steering pump or fluid! it has EPAS gen 1 electric power assist steering, it's powered by a brushless electric motor on the steering rack that fails due to overheating, and loss of communication. It's controlled by three computers. To fix it you will have to first replace the $1600 steering rack, if it remains non functional you will then have to replace the sensors and computers, for another $2000. I decided to just drive without power steering because i'm not willing to spend that much on a part for a 200,000 mile car, it's suprisingly easy to steer without it, much easier than when hydraulic systems fail, just requires slightly more effort when parking and taking really sharp corners, alot of effort if you try to turn the wheel while you're stopped, but there's really no reason to turn the wheel when you're stopped.
I have a 2012 Ford Fusion SEL bought it in 2014 no one ever told me there had been a recall on Rack and Pion motor in the 2011 And 2012.on.the Rack and Pion motor also in 2015 they had.another.recall.i was just told about.Still no.one notify me. My Rack and Pion motor quite.on August 24 2017 Took to.ford Dealership and I was told right year and model of car but wrong vent number they know the Rack and Pion motor are bad.But Ford wants us to pay for there.BAD Rack and Pion motor.i got a rebuild one it only work for 5 miles. Now I can't even drive my car but I have to make.payment.and.keep full coverage insurance policy on it. It pulls so hard to the left and I can't even steer the steering wheel it A DEATH TRAPPED.Ford refuse to fixed because of the vent number.
Plain and simple, water got into your rack and rotted the bearings. A new rack is needed. I replaced mines about two years ago and getting the feeling it's ready to fail again. I live in Florida and I believe it only takes one day of driving in heavy rain / deep puddles to start the corrosion process. I did the service myself and next time i'm chucking the whole car
for me ..it cost about 10$ .. but this happen with my friend .. he just disconnect the red cable of the 12V batry for 1 min. and everything going good ..
When it says service advancetrac that’s when you know it’s fucked, way above your intelligence and must be taken to FORD immediately. If it just says power steering assist fault you can get away with resetting electronics and using until it happens again… Just remember folks this guy is smarter than the average driver on the roads you drive on…
Ricardo Martinez damn that sux I’m in NC I went to Greene Ford they told me that they only cover the recall issue and if it’s caused by something else then I’d have to pay ..luckily my problem was whatever the recall is
@Jacks Journale correct it depends when and where it was manufactured and if you have too many miles on it they will use that as an excuse to not replace the parts.
Ford in florida said my vin number was a recall .. i called yesterday , my wheel been locked for 4 days.. they said they will check it and it will be free if it is that problem
Reset computer system, any mechanic can do that? Wondering if alignment will throw off steering or tire sensor. I had my sensor to my tire taken out because they had to replace valve. I replaced power steering and nothing. It still locked up as soon as I drove home. Stuck on what to do next. Even got all new tires after replaced whole steering column.
Hilarious. Delete your video and stop humiliating yourself. 2010 to current fusions use electronic steering and you even said there was “no pump, it’s electric”. Then you cuss and mention air that’s relevant to hydraulic pumps. Jesus you gen X people.
