I have a ton of fun in my 2012 Juke AWD. I'm not taking it on the track like my MR2, but for everyday driving, it's a ton of confidence in a little ugly ball.
All I can tell you is my little 1971 - 2 door, nearly stock Datsun 510 with 4 speed stick was one of the best handling, most fun to drive and certainly most reliable cars I have ever owned. I bought it used, when in high school from what was nearly the proverbial little old lady. Bring it back, slap a turbo on the bored out 1800cc version of the engine, or (MAYBE a 2.0 turbo diesel), a 6 speed gearbox, and a few modern niceties on it while keeping the weight down and I would buy one in a heartbeat.
I love the Juke. I have seen a few around town and I like the looks. I didn't know that they were this capable off road. I bet they go great in the snow. Just needs a manual option with the AWD feature. To bad you have to get the CVT.
Datsun 510 was a high performance car at the day while the Juke is a consumer level car nowadays So, yesterdays high end is today's mainstream .. but it took 40 damn years to get there.
The tires alone on the two cars make for a significant difference, and on that surface, the tires are going to get you 3 seconds at least. Juke was running summer tires? Compared to the gravel specific rally tires. Come on!
I think it's great that a household mid-sized car with standard tires and all luxuries is only 0.7sec slower than a purpose build rally car. It really shows how mutch faster cars have become a standard car almost equals the rally car, and on gravel!! As for the looks ... at least it does not look like so many cars and has a bit of originality to it! It stands out, and I think that's a good thing.
By-far THE most FUN I've ever got from watching a clip on this channel!! :-) Loved the backstory on the Datsun, and what a glorious noise the thing made! Made me misty for my backyard "rallying" days in my old Mercury Lynx. Why is this reviewer always so damned negative though?? Seriously...like every clip, this guy has to bash-on the car. Ugh.

I think the Juke is the future... when I hear people complain about how ugly it is, it reminds me of a bunch of old guys discussing how bad kids dress these days or how things aren't how the used to be. Ultimately people are just afraid of change... I think change is good and it's the spice of life.
have u seen the video ? he used the datsun to do some rally races but its stock , it only has what is needed to get into a rally stage , it has 120 hp or so
Yah I noticed no handbrake turn in the juke too. Probably on the floor. Might've made for a slightly faster time still. The 510 is nice. Always liked em.
He said the 510 is approx 2300 lbs.. ..the AWD Juke is right around 3250 lbs.. ..the 510 most likely has a suspension tuned for off road racing.. ..the Juke has it's stock, designed for street use, suspension. I'm surprised the 510 didn't spank the Juke, as it should have. Even though it would not have the advantage of AWD, if they had taken a FWD Juke with the 6 speed manual the fact that it is 2915 lbs and puts much more of its horsepower to the wheels would have most likely been a better match. Sometimes these car mag tests seem more designed to give the writers something to do in an afternoon than actually reveal anything about the cars themselves.
Nissan is not a stupid company that throws hunderds to cars in the market but they really work and take time and give u the best and affordable.products,
Seeing the 510, I'm reminded of something is very wrong with US racing. Too much emphasis on remembering old cars and not on building/using new ones to race. Modern versions of the 510, Escort Mk1 and Mk2, etc. would be killer cars today. Not a sports car like the new GT-86/FR-S, but a hot cheap compacts that are also normal cars, that normal people would buy, justifying building them with little fuss, thus fans and racers could get them NEW and go nuts.
Both cars are great, there is not point to try to campare them, specially if the 510 is prepared to run rally, has a massive weight lost, and most important have an engine swap running an SR20DE as long as I can see. so probably the 510 has a better power 2 weight ratio, but the juke 4WD is helping in this test.

He doesn't know the difference between a 1970 engine and a mid 90's engine and you expect him to know why a CVT sucks? He probably doesn't even know what a CVT is.
Couldn't they at least have used the Nissan Juke NISMO RS? Plus, I like the way the Juke looks. Of all the CVT transmission Vehicles I've driven, that one has the most aggressively active trans of them. It always keeps the power right on the money. It's a really lightweight car and it's chassis not half bad honestly. For what it is, I really like it. That being said it does come at a cost. The warranty is 3 years 30,000 miles. Pretty bad compared to most things nowadays. But for a peppy little bugger it's not terrible it's actually quite fun
I have both a 68 510, and a Nismo RS Juke. CVT trans are junk, mine has the 6 speed manual, Mr. Transmission has the CVT;s stacked up waiting for rebuilds or replacements .
Seriously, poor 510, also the 510 was the chassis after The Prince Corps Skyline for the Skyline, lets do a test with that? New 2013GTR vs a 1970GTR or 510SSS?
Loved the video! but... not really comparing apples with apples are we! Considering the datsun is a purpose built rally car with a later model twin cam 2lt motor and probably locked or aftermarket lsd diff etc. Try comparing a stock Datsun 510 with an open diff and its stock 96hp/108hp at the fly 1600cc motor and see the difference of 40years of automotive progress then!
the juke could be a great seller among american consumers specially women that like the typical cute small suv such as tiguan or the x3 all they need to do is some serious surgery to that front end and done! a great seller on a category of its own....
I love the old datsun as much as the next guy, but to say nissan has not made progress? That datsun was not a stock street car, and juke (ugly it may be) was all stock. I bet is u put some of the mods from the datsun into the Juke it would blow the doors off the Datsun! Not just a few tenths
@supervette2000 No, I like the look as well. So much, that I waited 5 months to get mine in 2011. They did not have the exact specifications I wanted in stock, only front wheel drive ones. Ordered it December 2010, got it April 21, 2011.
In 1972 the 510 was a very handsome looking car from Japan. Considering they were still cutting their teeth compared to American cars, the 510 certainly had some amazing features and unheard of reliability in their day. I find it truly amazing that even with only 135 horsepower, the 510 (some 1,000 lbs lighter) didn't do a little better in the run. The Juke is ass ugly, but it should have done so much better than 7/10th of second.
PRETTIER?? First off the 510 in fucking beautiful, and if you review a car for its off road/rally capability then why in the hell would you car if the car was pretty? Also that course was straight line as fuck, so you can't really judge anything from that... I hope this was a joke, because if it was I'm not the only one laughing.
