Service 4WD message on dash and lost communication with Transfer Case Controller. Now referred to as drive train control module. Open in battery feed wire near C130 beside TIPM. Corroded wire.
I wanted to thank you for taking the time to post these videos. Watching this helped me diagnose and repair the same problem on my 2012 ram. A local dealership told me I’d have to replace my TCCM before they could re-flash my truck and fix this problem. Instead, I put a $13 dollar sensor on it and used a cheap OBD II scanner I already owned to fix it myself. Again, thank you!!
Having Service 4x4 light on 2018, found this. GREAT stuff, thank you so much. I agree with what many have said here, my experience with this is that dealerships now just swap parts, don't even really test anything - never mind having the wherewithal to troubleshoot correctly like you. I wish there were a LOT more techs like you out there! We need you. Thanks for a super video.
so far you are the most knowledgeable of the people looking into this issue. I want to pick your brain. I get this error but not consistently, it will give me the error but after driving the truck a few hours, then parking it only to return, the error is gone. and if I do engage 4WD and make a turn the front feels like the older 4WD trucks that would fetch up or hop and grind in the turn. As long as I am driving in a straight line no issues. Just the other day I had the traction control light turn on but after I went to the gas station, shut off the truck to fuel up, then started the truck to drive away the light was gone. I don't know if they are related. Any and all help you can offer is much appreciated. Thank you. Rich
There should be a code or codes stored in one or more modules. You need a decent scan tool to do a network scan of all controllers. A code will give you some direction. There are probably 100 faults that can turn on that message.
Thank you for sharing this video there’s so much that we can learn from what you show I have a 2010 dodge ram today just started snowing so I went test out my 4 x 4 for the first time because I’m a new owner had 154 56,000 all good very happy felt good on snow even into overdrive the only thing I didn’t care for it was the traction control I didn’t like that part Subaru has it and I am not a fan of it Definitely a good video to come back if I need it hopefully never
I gotta say it sure is refreshing to see a technician actually diagnosing and repairing an issue as opposed to simply swapping parts Willy nilly. Good job Brother! That said, I have an issue with a 2014 that won’t shift into 4wd but we’re getting a clicking noise from the front area by the actuator. Does that, in your opinion indicate a failed actuator?
I take it this is a Dodge. The actuator shifts a fork which slides a collar across two gears. I'd take the actuator off and check the fork and collar. Chances are something is worn out in there. Make sure the actuator holds vacuum as well in both directions. Need a vacuum pump to check. Good luck.
@@rickmcculloch374 Ok so that front actuator is Electric not vacuum. Have you scanned the system for code? Start there and proceed with any code diagnosis. If that doesn't turn up anything I'd remove the actuator and inspect it for mechanical problems. There are four bolts that hold the actuator onto the housing. I'd remove it and have a look at the fork and collar. HTH Good Luck
My 2012 Ram 2500 Service 4WD light, Trailer Brake Disconnected light and Traction Control light came on at the same time. Got it scanned and it pulled a U0415 code. (Implausible Data Received From ABS - DTCM). It intermittently pops up. This video helped a lot, but I'm still searching for my needle in the hay stack.
There should be a code in the ABS module likely for a steering angle sensor or one of the wheel speed sensors. The ABS system likely has a problem and once the 4x4 system which gets networked data from the ABS sees this it sets an implausible data code. This will also disable Traction Control and likely trailer brake if enhanced original equipment. Hope this helps you.
Hey there, should the pink wire on the TCCM have constant power? I am getting 0V on that wire, if so, do you know which fuse is feeding that wire? Or which connector I would have to inspect. I inspected The one you found the issue on under the hood by the battery and it checks out. Thanks in advance
The pink wire only has power when the vehicle is running. Comes from the run/crank relay jn the TIPM through fuse M15 20amp via connector C130 and C123. Start the vehicle and see if you have power at the TCCM C1 terminal A4. It should light a test light. Hope this helps you.
where can i get a wiring diagram like that i have been all over the net , bought a hanze manual, and still cant find a print out .. is power loss is some where down the line further then yours
I use Identifix for service information but it is a subscription based service. Try Alldata DIY here: www.alldata.com/diy/en You can purchase access to an electronic version of a repair manual that will have OEM level diagrams. Haynes is slightly better than nothing I would not use it. HTH
It's a subscription service which as far as I know is only available to commercial shops for a fee. It's called Identifix. There is a similar DIY option available from their competition. Check out Alldatadiy.com It's pretty reasonable and will provide the same diagrams and information. Good luck.
@@PhillipBailey yes I did, drive train U0102 there was a wheel abs sensor bad but I replaced it and it went away after I deleted it and it's good to go....so I'm stuck with the U 0102 communication code
@@chadpowell7983 what computer is the U code in? Is it in the ABS? If the MIL is on due to an engine fault the ABS may set a code for invalid data from the ECM.
I'm using a SnapOn Verus Edge as a scanner. It is also a tablet and as such I use it to access Identifix service information for schematics and troublemaker charts. Hope this helps you.
2015 ram ecodiesel, code c1404 c140e, was having intermittent 4x4 serv light, but now the light is always on and the truck wont go in t case neutral 4x4 lock and low. Replaced front actuator and diff motor still the same issue. Any idea?
That code is for a problem with the transfer case range position sensor voltage out of spec. Here are some possibilities INTERMITTENT TRANSFER CASE RANGE POSITION SENSOR CIRCUIT LOW (K504) DRIVETRAIN 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT OPEN (K504) DRIVETRAIN 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO VOLTAGE (AUTO T-CASE) (T315) MOTOR CONTROL A CIRCUIT OPEN (AUTO T-CASE) (Z908) GROUND CIRCUIT OPEN (AUTO T-CASE) (T315) MOTOR CONTROL A CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND (MANUAL T-CASE) (T314) TRANSFER CASE RANGE POSITION SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND TRANSFER CASE SHIFT MOTOR/MODE SENSOR ASSEMBLY DRIVETRAIN CONTROL MODULE (DTCM)
I have a 2012 1500 ram and it’s throwing this same code and the truck won’t even start. Did this truck run before? Also what do you recommend I do if I found expose wire by the drivers seat? Do I re splice with connectors or just cover with electrical tape? Vehicle only has about 65000 miles on it. I have a cheap scanner tool and throwing code U0141 Thank you
The U code is a network code and could be the cause of the no-start. Does it crank and not start or no-crank. The 4x4 code should not affect the running of the truck unless the 4x4 module is taking down the Bus. As for the wires are any of them a twisted pair? that would likely be network wires. They should be soldered and sealed. how did they get damaged in the first place?
It cranks but no start. And the wires got damaged from the previous owner I’m guiding it looks like maybe with a screw and had some sort of bracket by the seat there. It was running just fine even with the damaged wires then I tapped them all up with electrical tape and started having issues. Bad fuse? A short maybe?
@@PhillipBailey also yes they are twisted wires and they look real small gage. I think when I wrapped everything up with tape again maybe an expose wire is being shorted out or in contact with another wire the 4x4 code comes up on my dash just Like your video but the when I scan it the other code pops up U0141. I should be able to fix the wires and check the fuses? Any suggestions on restarting the ecu?
@@cdickey16 I'd recommend to untape and closely inspect the twisted pair. That is likely a Can Bus pair and if the wires are shorted can result in your issue. Once corrected the code should self clear. Your scan tool should be able to clear it but other controllers may have codes since I'm not sure what you are scanning it with. Good Luck
I found this video trying to fix my 2011 Ram 1500 Big Horn 5.7. The front left tire came apart and tore up the harness that goes to the rear of the truck under the wheel well. I see at the @7:00 you show a hologram view of the harness. How can I find out what this harness is called so I can get replacement end connectors?
I'd suggest a salvage yard for the connectors you need. Some are available from the dealer but in most cases they will only see you the entire harness which is very expensive and difficult to replace.
@@PhillipBailey I found a website that sells the connector but I don't know what number connector mine are to order the right ones. I need a diagrams that shows me the connector number.
I have an 2011 ram 1500 laramie the front axles lock in but the transfer case motor does not lock in the transfer case... I replaced the transfer case motor also.
me too. I replaced the transfer case because I was able to get the front axle disconnect to engage by using a jumper wire. so I figured it had to be in the transfer case. replaced it, and still no 4x4. the vehicle recognizes that im putting it in all modes of 4x4, and on a lift under no load, 4x4 will engage. put it under a load on the ground, and it doesn't work at all. tcase motor has no voltage even though the truck sees you've put it in 4wd. can't figure out what's going on.
I’m having the same issue with my 2015 ram 2500, I checked all the wiring. My battery voltage with ignition on only is at 11volts, could that be the problem? My 4wd works.
I dont understand. You said you're having the same problem but your 4x4 works? If your battery is weak it might drop to 11 volts KOEO. What's going on?
@@ricksters310 there may be a problem with the network wiring to the 4x4 module but that usually results in messages on the dash and problems shifting into andbout of 4x4. What scanner are you using? I'd recommend to try another scan tool.
Can a scan tool communicate with the drive train control module? Any codes in any controllers when a network code scan is done? I'm just outside Thunder Bay in Ontario Canada eh. Where are you located?
excellent video friend, I still have a ram 1500 2011, but my 4x4 just stopped working, which of the 3 modes I select does nothing and does not show that it is active on the dashboard
Philip, i have a 2011 ram, 4x4 issues. And being in the great white north without it sucks. All console lights indicate thi gs are working? However, i picked up the front of the truck, 4Hi front wheels free spin. 4Low seems to be engaged? Passengers side CV joint needs to be addressed soon. Believe actuator is working since i have 4 low? Does the module control high or low setting in the front diff and the actuator/coupling work with either setting? 4Low
4hi and 4lo are functions of the transfer case and the front axle will lock to provide 4wd in both. Sometimes the stubshaft spines going into the inboard cv joints strip and slip. Might spin the front wheels when no load is present but slip under a load.
I know that I need a new stub shaft and CV on passenger side, as it is starting to slip. But getting 4Low tells me my actuator is still working. Could this be a fluid pressure/level symptom? Have had transmission pressure sensor issues years ago and fluid level played a big part.
@@PhillipBailey I will try and get it into our local mechanic Tuesday, my first day off. Just finding it strange that I'm missing 4 High and not 4 Low. Originally Dr. Google suggested actuator was issue? I'm up in Northern BC, 2 hours from Dealership. Thanks for quick reply.
Scan the 4x4 controller for codes. No disrespect but are you following the correct procedure for shifting into 4 low. Trans shifter in neutral, foot on the brake, level ground, not moving?
@@PhillipBailey yes sir lol I've used 4 wheel drive alot on my truck might be from giving truck hell at river but no codes are showing or engine lights are on
