What started out as hunting down a power steering leak, turned into replacing the power steering rack, both control arms, ball joints and sway bar links... in a dirt pull-off on the side of the street.
Little did I know, while editing this video, that Eric, over @SouthMainAuto was replacing the subframe on a 2014. Essentially the same job...
As stated, there didn't seem to be much out there on this Generation Subaru, so if your up against doing this yourself, I HIGHLY recommend checking out his video too!
• Project Rotted Subaru ...
In this video, I'm approaching this project blind... I couldn't find any publicly available information on how this job is performed, so I'm "winging it",
side of the road style.

I do most, if not all repairs, with tools that I carry around in my overloaded 1997 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. I perform "On-Site" braking and suspension repairs, amongst other diagnostics and services. My tools consist mostly of Craftsman, a few Stanley, Snap-On, Husky, Pittsburgh, and S&K tools. Scan tools include hand held Actrons, DVOMs, and test lights. I also currently use a Zurich ZR Pro, for advanced and bidirectional diagnostics as well as a Snap-On Verus Pro, for more detailed diagnostics. I'm always expanding my collection, based on need and convenience.

Man that's a sucky job to do on the lift let alone on the ground. Kudos to you!

I REALLY wish I had seen yours BEFORE I tackled this... could have saved me 2 hours of "winging it"! (The weather was wacky, parts got delayed, ambition to record bounced around like Big Nasty, and at times I really just wanted it over with!)

It is depressing to be working in the road, parking lot, or driveway, just because someone didn’t want to have the car towed. Not sure how old pops is in this case but I have learned NOT to get involved is jobs that are like this.

@@macmcdougald1769 I'm sure the steel lines could have been changed without removing the cross member. I have changed in other cars mostly loosening the steering rack

@@macmcdougald1769 THIS is what I find pleasure in doing. No tow needed as I do it where it sits (when I can) I do NOT yet have a shop.

Not the only one....Eric @SouthMainAuto was doing a subframe, at the same time. Same model, and same process, but he was replacing the subframe and I was replacing the rack. Both processes are almost exactly the same. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gMHYnWLQ5As.html

You are an absolute madman! Doing this job on the side of the road, on gravel, on jackstands, with basic tools??? It would take a lot to persuade me to take that job - and my body would be sore for a week after if I did.
@HouseCallAutoRepair
@HouseCallAutoRepair Год назад
It was all that bad. Will be MUCH easier next time. But.... it's done and everybody is happy! AND I was able to show some people what might be involved, should they want to replace their own, as well as appreciating the work their mechanic is doing on their car.

I wish I'd have thought of that idea for old rotors. Nice hack! Great content you have here. I love seeing guys work the same as I do, out in the driveway without thousands of dollars of gear and still getting it done. Keep on truckin'!

Thank you so much for doing this video series, I found out much as you have, there is no information on this anywhere on youtube, everyone is happily pulling out the previous gen which is a breeze lol. I just crawled out from under the car and told my better half, honey we will have to probably drop the whole subframe which means dropping the exhaust...but one thing I do know is there is lots I don't know :) so I thought I'd look into this and see if anyone has done this and pray there is somelittle trick that I am just not aware of.... Good news bad news, no trick and I was right, but now I know the royal pain in the ass facing me if I choose to do this. Yay. Anyhow, dropped a sub and a like, most grateful for these.

I had to turn this video off after three minutes. It was like watching someone about to get into an accident. I just did the same job and a 1998 Subaru, 300,000 miles last January. In the driveway with no rack and no access to the metric bolts needed for the job. Good luck and I hope next year is better for you.

dang, that is some work. and doing it all roadside without a lift! you're a beast. FWIW, I had the exact same problem with our 2009 Forester - one of the hard lines attached to the rack cracked at the same spot where the hard bracket separator clamps them together (partially because the circular clamp holding the lines to the rack had rusted away completely, leaving only the sharp-edged separator bracket supporting that side). I was able to loosen the rack and drop it down a couple inches without disconnecting the steering shaft and then replace the hard lines with the rack still installed, although I'll admit clearances were tight and some bad words may have been used. but it can be done rack-in-car, at least on 2009-2012 Foresters.
@HouseCallAutoRepair
@HouseCallAutoRepair Год назад
I had hoped that was all I would have needed to do, but the fluid was almost black, and the rack didn't want to move by hand.... So it turned into a front suspension and steering replacement.

Not too bad as long as you're ready to conquer those frame bolts CAREFULLY. I soak them with penetrant well in advance and try to crack them loose and soak them some more. Then carefully impact them off, on, off, on, off, on, off in small stages if needed, so as to not bind and break them.
