Just a word on the whole mana leak thing: Finkel didn't memorize Iyanaga's deck list, but he did pick up on some information that we all missed just a few minutes prior to this play. Notice at 10:15, Iyanaga cracks an Arid Mesa, and while doing so pulls up the only two targets out of his deck. Finkel caught this and knew they were the only two since Iyanaga went all the way through his deck on that search, didn't search on a Path to Exile in between this and the mana leak, and thus gave it away.
yeah, and also, iyanaga just scry'ed one card on top; and given how light his hand was at that point, finkel thought the mana leak might still hold value by reducing his opponent's top card's quality
Yeah on top of that he cracked a Misty Rainforest right after the Mesa and failed to find (only thing left was a sacred foundry). With that and the aforementioned information (plus not searching off the path) he can deduce exactly what he has left.
That was a fetch land, so when he cracked the fetch land to look for a basic mountain, all the basic mountains were already out. Thats why he was 1 mana short to pay for the mana leak.
"armed with knowledge of Iyanaga's decklist" He was implying that Finkel knew that Iyanaga had no more fetch targets from knowing his decklist. I'm pretty sure that most top players woulden't even think about that. So you can stop trying to make it seem obvious just because the commentators told you eventually. Or the more reasonable option that dgboygx suggested, it's impossible to know unless someone asks Finkel.
He not realy wants to find a land cause he surely knows there is not mountain or plains in his deck put sacrificing them makes the knight bigger and they do not produce mana so what is telling you he is a bad player? And even a Pro-player can forget something that is or is not in his deck (i personally think finkel is better but that doesn't mean iyanaga is bad xD)
I would like to tell Wizards that your people doing commentary are trying to think too deep into things, and are missing very obvious things. This is causing them to say incorrect things.
they're playing so many of the same cards because those are the best cards available to play with. tournaments are about winning, who cares what you're playing so long as you win?
I dind't quite understand what happended with that mana leak? I didn't get why Iyanaga did not have a target (for what card?) I'm a bit at loss here, my Magic isn't as good as I thought....
They're totally free to do that. If they did, they wouldn't have made it this far in the competitive environment in the first place. People who use good cards tend to win alot. Seems boring, but the people playing are probably having the time of their lives.
PLEASE record these at a higher volume so I don't blow out my speakers the next time I watch a video. This whole series of videos is recorded at a strangely low volume.
hes right, his knowledge of iyanaga's decklist was huge. he had 2 lands + one fetcher. he mana leaked because he knew the fetch didnt had a target. he is just such a great player.
Becosue 'Fun' should be the driving factore of the game. I do understant what both of you are saying but you can see why peoplewould want the game to remain varied, eles whats the point in printing all the other cards are creating a game with so much varience.
37:43. I find it a little sketchy that Iyanaga didn't do any rifle shuffling, he just cut 3 times, then Finkel cut once, which I don't think counts as sufficiently randomized.
The one land was a fetch land so Iyanaga couldn't use that, he also used all of that type of land to fetch so he could not get fetch it anyway. Good going Finkel
I love magic, but these tournaments are so boring. Almost everybody uses the exact same deck style with the exact same cards. Have fun with it. Make your own bullshit deck, don't just throw in all the over powered cards.
It matters because this isnt supposed to be one of thoose sports wheres its akll about winning a hell of a lot. I hate to pull a yugioh referecne but hell, wheres the heart of the cards anymore?
