Good job Mario , I have run in to this once , after doing a headgasket job on a 5.0 turbo , I never touched the fp chain so I figured i didn't have to reset it after assembling back . When I started it and test drove I got that message came up for reduce power . The chain had jumped 2 teeth 😬 and I had to go back in there for the second time 🤦‍♂️ . This video was like dejavu for me .lol . For 2 weeks I had nightmares . Keep up the good work brother i feel your grind 💪.

Hello Gilberto, did you have high fuel pressure as well? I did hear gasket job and now getting irratic RPM bouncing about 75 rpm even during acceleration. Driving me 🤪

Heck of a find Mario! That doesn't look like a small job at all! The main chains are fairly common failures, right? But I never heard of the fuel pump chain stretching on those! Heck of a find.

Mario, this video was very good as I work on Rover's myself. I ran into a similar issue with a 2.0 audi that was building too much fuel pressure and the chain was off.

Looking forward to watching this after work tonight, working in Jlr here in Ireland we rarely see and 5.0’s only generally 2.0 3.0 Diesel’s which generally only either have a cracked dpf/scr or have just blowen up .....!

WOW! Fantastic job, Mario! No doubt one expensive repair, but the customer should absolutely be thrilled their vehicle is now right. PS: don’t beat yourself for initially speculating it might need new pump(s). You ultimately made the right call and that’s all that matters.

Excelente trabajo Mario, por desgracia la falta de información es algo con lo que ha veces nos toca lidiar en este trabajo, me ha recordado a una conversación que mantuve hace unos meses con un ingeniero y amigo que me comentaba que hay por lo menos 6 tipos diferentes de sistemas de inyección GDI contando tipo de bomba, tipo de regulador y regulación de la eletroválvula. Muchas gracias por compartir.

How do you know you have to do a timing chains for RR supercharged ?? I have bought a 4.2 1superchaged // 157 Kmiles .. been said it has been done ? But how not be sure about it ??

Hi good video bud thank you for sharing. Man this makes me nervous! I am having similar issue with oscillating rpm while driving, not really at idle then some sputtering off idle not idling in my 2012 supercharged. Been to a few "specialists" and spent plenty with parts changers, an embarrassing amount of money with no improvement. Wish you could have a look.

I have seen the no codes with a CEL On in a much newer BMW...2017 I believe : I think it’s a scantool problem. Didn’t have another scantool to check,but checked the car a few days later with the same scantool and the code was there : something about the radiator shutters...

That is a massive job. I was under the impression that the body has to come off to remove the engine on those. Is that correct. Well done anyway. I wouldn’t have fancied that one!!!

Great video is there anyway you can go over the fuel system and the regulator valve test again I didn't understand that

Sure. By disconnecting each valve, i was getting the valves to stay closed, and comparing the fuel pressure between each fuel pump. Being unlikely that both pumps would have a stuck open valve, if one was an issue, we would've seen it by doing this test. I guess you can call it a high pressure fuel pump contribution test. Seeing that the pressures closely matched, i thought that it was very likely that both fuel pumps and their valves were good. Having ruled out the pressure sensor, and now the pumps and valves, they only thing left was the fuel pump cam timing as the culprit. Hope this helps

Mario, thank you for the video. I’ve just started taking an ATTS fuel system diagnostics class and this was very helpful. What pressure should the high pressure pump be putting out at idle? Man that is a lot of chains. Does that pump run off the crank or cam? Lucky those weren’t worn. That was a job and a half. Nice work and nice troubleshooting. Hope it lasts. How many miles on the replacement engine? Guess thats enough questions. Only answer if you have the time. Thanks and stay well and safe 😊😊😊

Thanks for watching! I mentioned at the end where the pressure was at and why i couldn't say exactly where the pressure should be. The pump is directly on the cam, the lobes were flawless by the way. I've no idea how many miles were on the replacement engine since that engine was replaced by another shop Thanks again Arthur!

Thanks for responding Mario. I did catch it at the very end looked like 400-500 PSI. MAYBE ILL Ask that question tomorrow night in class. See what they say. So many different facets to to these GDI pumps.i do know they wear the cam and the cam follower and also should use gas with a certain additive.thanks Mario for all the info you have supplied to me through your videos ❤️

I was able to manually jump teeth on that one (fuel pump chain) once with a plastic wedge and put it back in time.

I play with my tacoma GDI system. At Idle desire is 0 psi but you can see 450 psi at the rail and is normal. If you leave the car Idle for 15 to 20 min the pressure can get up to 780 psi just idling. But man that's a lot of work my guess is 20 to 30 hour labor time.

Hi, this is a very detailed diagnosis and repair. I am a DIYer and I also own a 2012 LR4 same 5.0L NA engine. Mine is sending codes related to catalyst and emission misfires and no misfires in the cylinders with fuel trims within normal range. You are an excellent mechanic and I would like to ask your guidance on how to go about solving the check engine codes. The check engine light comes on right away as soon as I start the engine. After I clear it with my GAP tool, I can drive up to 10-20 miles without check engine light; however, as soon as I turn off the engine and restart, the check engine light comes on again. I hope you can give me an insight on what's going on.

Out of curiosity how does the pump timing effect that fuel pressure....?

I would use an engine as an analogy. If the intake timing was advanced, it would result in a longer intake stroke and raise compression. The way the fuel pump builds pressure and its regulator caps that built pressure together is how we get our controlled pressure. If the regulator is not in sync with the cam, it could very well be closed at the wrong time and opening at the wrong time. I suspect that the regulator valve is opening early in relation to the cam timing and allowing more of the "compression" stroke to come into the fuel rail

Keith Morris As a tech based in Ireland/Europe you come across some really weird issues with euro built cars/vans, the engineers that design them most certainly don’t take servicing/repairs in to account....! The Asian cars generally seem a bit more straight forward as for us cars I wouldn’t have a clue as the only us car I’ve ever worked on was a c2 corvette and that was about 15 years ago....!

wow, made me wonder why the car diagnostic system failed to tell you what is wrong. I would expect it to tell you if some thresholds are too high. Hope the newer models have better diagnosis system and less complicated design :) anyway, great video mario :)

If timing was out, I'd definitely be doing leakdown texting before anything else. But since timing was good, only the fuel pump timing out, no reason for leakdown testing

I keep getting a cylinder 5 misfire code for even on after a fuel injector and spark plug job filters and Mafs. Only on idle when starting. You can barely feel it. Anyone have any idea? It’s on a 2011 Range Rover supercharged.

Hey how you doing nice tutorial, my car is doing rough idle, when am in traffic on just not moving, and I just had the head gasket all 8 injectors all 8 plugs new water pump new fan new thermostat, and it's rough, do you have any advice for me, garage said I should drive it that the ECU will start to recognize the new fit part any advice ? You ever get any fix for this? I'm on same page... head gasket valve seals plugs Water pump Expansion tank New cap Pcv valves Thermostat All coolant lines .....and now I have a bouncy rpm at all times... enen during acceleration. Tried the old fashioned throttle body relearn and now rmp idles at 1k.. Any ideas?

Hoisted engine out or lifted up the chassis? When the pump chain is so loose (14:30), it is not a chain stretch? Maybe chain guide or its spring is broken? If it is the non-spring side of the guide, u might be able to just remove it and set timing and put in a new guide.... Otherwise, yes, pan needs to be dropped and that stupid pan is bolted on by the rear main seal plate.. ha which means engine and tranny to be separated. I know how painful it is to work on these tanks. Everything is heavy duty.

I have had a few newer Range Rover vehicles go to restricted power because of low fuel level, a new strategy to protect the pumps from running dry?

I just had a 2020 Rover here with low fuel and it didn't do that. That's also not what happened here lol Also doesn't explain the fuel pressure i was getting here I've never seen low fuel level cause a restricted performance lol

@@SuperMarioDiagnostics fuel pump chain, wow! It's got me thinking, you are using the Autel to check for codes yeh? You would think if the money lamp was on a code would be present. Then I got thinking about a job on a Range Rover Evoque that I had for multiple codes thrown, after clearing the codes with a Launch scan tool, the money lamp stayed on, I ended up sending the car to a dealer I do some work for and he put the Range Rover scan tool on it and guess what? It still had a proprietary Range Rover code, (non OBD2) still present, which the Launch didn't recognise or show.
