Thank you all for tuning in to Super Mario Diagnostics!
Today we are testing to find the root cause of a cold start high idle on a 2014 Range Rover with a 3.0L. To aid in our testing, we employ the use of two tools: the Autool SDT 206, and the Stinger 2020.

Great video and diagnosis. This happened to me. It took the vehicle a while to reset after a repair. I also was kinda freaking out a bit but like you said... Take the vehicle out for a test drive afterwards and watch everything return to normal.

On the autel mx808 it will reset fuel adaption but you have to go in by using the "I" icon next to a code. But to be honest these rovers fuel trim will still be goofy until you drive it, idk why. It threw me for loop the first couple times. Now I don't sweat it.

Great information! I just replaced a leaking water pump on one of these Friday that had misfire codes for all cylinders and had high rpms during cold start. Customer declined diagnosing problem .

I am having a rough idle at cold start on my 2015 L405 5.0 SC I changed plugs to no avail. No codes thrown, and goes away when warm. Would this be something I sholould look at doing?

That smoke machine looks nice! I seen Keith Perkins using one a few years ago, but I haven't seen one since! If I remember correctly, they're priced right too.

Ya Bro.. Worth every penny for sure. picked mine up just over 2 years ago now and is still going strong. Nice to have some pressure when needed. Tested mine to put out almost 25 psi. Came in handy to test those forced induction pipes and intercoolers.

Thank you mario for the vedio, it is quite informative. I own a rangerover sport 2015, and i faced the same problem, but it was not the valve cover, there is the hose that goes into the super charger needed to be replaced. This hose damage is quite popular problem manufacturerer in rangerover. Just wanted to share the info with you.

Sir, or can anyone help me find the correct name for the plastic pipe/tube bolted with 2 bolts behind the pass side of the supercharger that runs towards the firewall and then it disappears. i smoke tested it and it is corrugated. thanks in advance.

So I have a 2013 xf 3.0 sc having high idle almost like I’m reviving the engine. Getting p115d changed the mass air flow sensors changed the pcv valve and nothing has fixed the issue what do you recommend me looking at next?

Mario where did you tie in the smoke machine? I saw you hook it up to battery voltage was the machine tied into one of the bladders? If so I missed that event. Excellent video nice videography very clear good audio. Thanks for sharing and stay well and safe Artie. 👍👍👍

I have done the same live data to my 2011 range rover 5.0 sc and found the long term is -7 and short is +2 so what would be the issue Mario?

Love the video and channel. Always look forward to the next one. Been at my current independent shop 13 years (mostly domestic). Looking to make the switch to European independent or maybe even dealer. Any words of advice or future reading that helped you in your transition to euro? I subscribe to many of your recommended channels just wondering if there are any that would help making the transition. Thanks for your time!

I'd say find a shop that is conducive to your transition, and just go for it. It's really one of those things you just gotta dive in Check out positive lead diagnostics, and diagnosedan and p tech

This video is helpful but it doesn’t solve the problem. My Range Rover Sport v6 2014 model is giving same problem and fault is not being diagnosed. Have done the smoke test there is no leak. Changed the spark plugs, coils and injectors, son Falt with airflow and oxygen sensors either car still starts at 2600 rpm in the morning. This problem came after I got the engine chain work done and problem seems not to be going. Machenic says it’s not the engine chain timing either. Help

That's because this video is meant to show the tests necessary to pinpoint the problem. Not to just give you an answer. That's not how it works. Faults must be assessed, tested, and pinpointed. Reset adaptations then restart testing. Without any data, i can't help you. I need numbers just like we did in the video

I didn't realize LTFT responds so quickly to changes. Do you find that STFT is not as useful for confirming a vac leak with snap throttle?

Every vehicle is different, i usually put all trims, but usually go for the long term ones

The LTFT “memorizes” the fuel trims at every RPM range, so it’s not really changing that fast, it’s just recognizing that RPM and recalling that it needs that much trim to run correctly at that RPM.

The smoke machine was installed downstream of the mafs, so there was no coating on the mafs

Good stuff Brother...Love that light. Great, now I'm gonna have to find one. Stupid flashlight addiction problems. Dam you bro.. Lol Love my machine as well..had to name him Chong of course. Ol Chong did have me worried once tho.. I kinda over worked that guy into a over heat shut down. Guess after so much smoking they just don't have the stamina for the long haul. LMAO After some rest and cool down time, he was ready to get smoking again. (Paul's favorite.. EVAP Lol)

Sorry to ask.... why you disconnect the purge valve when you smoked the engine?

Because if it were stuck open, it'd be a vacuum leak. It's a normally closed valve when no current is passing through it, so it should be closed with the engine off

Out a matter of interest do you ever go to the bother of blocking the tailpipes too when carrying out smoke tests?

Not really. I've only seen smoke come out of a tailpipe once The chances of an engine stopping right at valve overlap are slim

Super Mario Diagnostics That is a fair point! Must defo get one of those smoke testers / torch . The lack of having to use the air line is great as you pointed out, in work we have the Jlr high pressure smoke tester but it’s a bit of a PITA to use especially if you want to check under the vehicle what with the air line having to be connected 😡.

Super Mario Diagnostics we’ve gotten a bulletin out already for the new p300 1.5 gas/hybrids already where if you do a pcm update (which has to be done at pdi ) you have to relearn fuel trims which take up to an hour of driving which no doubt JLR won’t pay for ......!
