2013 Mac Pro 10 Years Later 

Just dropping by to say a massive thank you. I'm overwhelmed and very flattered by all of these lovely comments. About the Mac Pro. There are loads of absolutely fantastic points in this thread, so many that I could easily make another video of a very similar runtime about those points alone! My plan is to try and put together a Part 2 to this, trying out some things that people have suggested, and covering in detail some more of the points listed here, especially regarding the Mac Studio, a machine that I forgot about entirely when making this video. On a more general note, I'm delighted that after all this time, people are still enjoying this content. I know things have changed a lot on RU-vid, so to see so much love for this style is very refreshing and means a great deal to me. Thank you everyone. As always there's no shortage of ideas in my head, it's just about time and life. I'll never ever 'leave RU-vid' or anything crazy like that, it's just sometimes it may take me a little longer than other times. I'll always be here though! I can't respond to every comment, but thank you for the love and I hope you're all doing great too.

So good to see this online. As you know I have not been too well and I forgot you had acquired this from me. As far as my records show, it came from Apple who upgraded me from the base specification to this, replacing my faulty 2013 Mac Pro. They had none of the original one I ordered in stock, so I agreed to this. The D700 GPU turned out to be a great choice, as they performed great for video editing. It came with 2x 8GB memory modules inside and I upgraded with the Crucial Memory straight away. Lucky I did that upgrade, as the pre-installed memory had developed a fault, so never made their way back into the machine. I hope you really enjoy it Tom :D

I remember subscribing to you back in 2009 from my older channel ( which is now closed down ). Logging onto youtube today and seeing an IMNC upload really made me feel some sort of emotions that I can't even begin to express. Great to see you're still around Tom! Best regards- Keegan.

I picked up a 2013 Mac Pro at the start of the pandemic just to have a desktop Mac and it honestly blew me away with how fast and responsive it was. It may sound a bit weird but I think it's one of the computers I've loved the most despite (or perhaps because of) its flaws.

Tom, I am just thrilled to see you again! So glad you're still invested in the channel. I would say go for upgrading the CPU and storage. You can use a small $15 adapter and then install an NVMe drive. 12 Core CPUs are out there begging to be installed in your MP! And yeah, that extra 32GB of RAM would be cool to see in there too! I hope you are able to get a few more videos out this year, but I know being a father of little ones takes up a LOT of time. :)

It's great to see you back on RU-vid, Tom! The 2013 Mac Pro is a very nice machine in terms of it's design. As someone who collects lots of vintage PowerMacs including several G4 Cubes I would love to own one of these to sit next to my Cube as well as a Mac Studio as the Cube is my favourite desktop computer design of all time apart from this beauty. It's incredible to see the D700s outperform the M1 Mac Mini, a consumer grade Mac which cost £699 when new compared to a machine that could have easily cost up to £5,000 for this configuration even though it's 10 years old. I'm glad to see that you'r all doing well and hope to see many more videos from you. This will always be a piece of history even though many consider it a failure compared to the old Cheesegrater.

Happy to see your back. I just got an M1 mac mini myself last month and I am loving it.

Watched this on my 6 core D500 model with 32GB/512GB SSD - picked it up from CEX about 6 months ago (for less than £400) as a daily driver and for Lightroom. Have to say its my favourite computer of all time (my first was a Spectrum 128K +2 back in 1988) and it really is a hidden gem if, ironically, you're not too much of a Pro user. If I upgrade now it'd have to be a Studio to make it a worthwhile investment. Really great to see you back Tom!

Welcome back! It’s crazy how the time flys, I still remember when you got your 2013 MacBook Pro and how much we have all grown! I would either sell it right way and buy a cheaper one in the future when they drop OR Fully upgraded it with 128 GB ram, 12 core etc and see if their is any big improvements!

Absolutely awesome to see a video from you!!! The other day I rewatched the Retina Macbook Pro vids as I finally got my hands on a top of the line 2015 model to give to my mum. I remember watching the keynote back when the the Mac Pro 2013 was announced "Can't innovate anymore my ass!" what a crazy machine. Would be interested to see a newer unsupported OS installed if you have time to tinker, I doubt its as simple as 'LeopardAssist' these days haha. Hope the family is well and life is good.

Wow Tom! I’m so pleased you’ve uploaded! Your videos just have something special about them that nobody else’s quite manage to have! I’ve got a trash can and use it almost every day! It’s been upgraded to 64GB of ram and the 12 core Xeon. It runs Logic Pro X and the Komplete Suite really really well! Mind you I don’t use it for work, just for fun stuff but still, a solid little machine!

I considered getting one to replace my aging 2008 Mac Pro that I'm running as a home server but they're still surprisingly expensive. I'm hoping a 2012/2014 Mac mini will cross my path in the coming months because the 2008 Mac Pro is really, really starting to show its age.

I’ve been watching your channel for probably over five years now, and man, it was awesome to see that notification that you released a new video. Obviously family and other personal life things are more important than RU-vid, but it’s nice to see ya on the platform again! In regards to the Mac Pro, I’ve always wanted to get one myself. With the prices they’re at now, they’re not the *worst* deals anymore. It wouldn’t surprise me if I got one if it became a daily driver Mac. With them being unsupported though, it does make me wonder how well they’d run Ventura, since they can be patched to run it. 🤔

Thanks for this! Great video! I just bought a "trashcan" Mac on eBay so like most nerds I am watching lots of videos about it as I wait for it to arrive. I bought it for a pretty simple reason. I work remotely and use remote desktop to control my cloud based Windows PC for work so I do not need anything super powerful but I also like to use a triple monitor setup, two for my work machine and one for podcasts, music, videos etc. I currently do this with a Ryzen based Windows PC but I discovered while travelling and using an old Mac Mini how convenient it is to use iMessage and Facetime on the host machine while I worked. The problem is the Mac mini only supports 2 monitors without resorting to janky or expensive usb to hdmi adapters. Major first world problems! I bought the Mac for $240 usd. It is the mid tier model with the 6 core processor and D500 graphics but has been upgraded to 64 GB of RAM. I feel like I got a pretty good deal. Most are going for more like $275-$300. If it doesn't work out as my daily driver, I might use it as a Plex server.

I use on of these as my main desktop along with my M1 MacBook Pro, bought the 2013 Mac Pro to replace my Hackintosh. Mine has a 3.3GHz 8 Core Xeon, 64GB RAM, D300 Graphics and a 1TB SSD, still keeps up with my use case making music the only downside is the heat and power consumption compared to my M1. Love the design and build quality though.

Excellent video! Crazy to think how time moves, both for the Mac Pro and for the channel! The 2013 Mac Pro is a cool machine, but real world use is another. It certainly is still powerful considering it’s a decade old, which is really nice to see that computers in a general sense last longer. (Of course PowerPC and older is still plenty usable, as well as FireWire, best connector ever!) Like you mentioned though, lack of updates/refreshes as well as lack of options really didn’t help. If they kept the proper Desktop Mac Pro alongside this one, acting like the Mac Studio for 2013, I’m sure it wouldn’t have been disliked as much. It’s nice to see they did bring back an updated Mac Pro Desktop with Intel and now M Series architecture, but the 6 years of nothing only made the image of the machine worse. Timeless design like the G4 Cube, but a lot of missed potential which is a shame as it is a nice Mac, but not for everyone. It would be interesting to see how well BootCamp works on this, maybe trying different versions of Windows alongside Windows only games, but also to downgrade to older versions of Mac OS and see if there are any significant changes to performance. It’ll be cool to see what else you do with the Mac Pro, and it’s probably worth hanging onto at this point considering it’s still like new along with factory packaging. Plus you do have OpenCore to try out with newer versions of macOS. Considering the amount of Thunderbolt ports this has, it’s a great machine to try out some older accessories, maybe something cool from Sonnet or just messing around with FireWire? Regardless of what you do, it’s a great machine and great video!
