Suzuki Alto.
I needed to adjust the Clutch pedal free play on my car, and made this video to show how I did it.
A 14mm and 17mm open ended spanner is used for this. if the cable itself turns while adjusting, you will need another spanner, or mole grips/pliers to hold it.
If you choose to do this yourself, I can't be held responsible for any damage to either yourself or the car. If in any doubt, take it to your local garage and they will do the job for you.
If you'd like to, you can buy me a coffee if you think this was useful to you. Thank you.

I just want to say a big thank you for posting this video. I'm a new Alto owner and was a bit worried about how far the clutch pedal went down before any resistance was felt. Your video has solved the problem. Thank you. 👍

THANK YOU! I was stranded on the highway and this video got me back on the road in 20 minutes! I had an urgent appointment far away. If I hadn't adjusted the clutch I would have had to pay a small fortune for a long taxi ride. Please let me know if you ever come to Israel so that I can give you a tour of Haifa in my Suzuki Alto and buy you a beer!

@@DavidGarside do you still own the little Alto? They are great cars I bought mine brand new in April 2014 ..has 103,000kms now. In that time I have had the alternator replaced..a loose rear wheel ABS sensor ...clutch noise that was replaced under warranty.only just replaced front pads and it still runs very well and has been used many times in Regional Western Australia into the outback without any problems even in 45 deg heat. My mechanic loves working on her and we often joke about the smallness of parts ect. It truelly is a ripper..just watching all your videos now😁

@@semklm7579. Good morning. No I don't I'm afraid. I retired at the end of May and sold it to a young man who I'd been teaching to drive as he l9ved it so much. He soon passed his test and has been using it regularly, but has just upgraded to a Seat Leon which he said he always wanted. You've had similar experiences to me in the past too with Alternator and clutch etc. The only annoying thing I found was trying to find service and repair information....Suzuki seem to want to keep it a secret. Thank you for watching and your message. 👍👍

Thanks David! I just replaced the clutch on my Alto and didnt know how to adjust the cable so its at 1cm play now (owners manual confirms 10mm - 15mm is the recomended play). For those wondering, in the case of my car with a brand new clutch the pedal got adjusted all the way to the end of the thread (facing towards the inside of the car).

David, I've just found mt daughter's Suzuki Alto 1.1 (2005) has a slipping clutch and she needs to get home tomorrow. Would loosening this off give a bit more life from the clutch for her to get home ?
@DavidGarside
@DavidGarside 5 лет назад
Hi Peter. Thanks for your message. I'm not a mechanic, but from past experience I would say if there isn't any free play at the pedal (assuming your earlier model has a cable and your manual states there should be ) then yes you may be able to adjust some of it out. If it's been slipping for sometime then you not be able to due to excessive wear. It's worth checking the manual and go from there I think. Good luck, hope she gets home ok !

David I have a splash and I'm finding the clutch ain't releasing fully when I'm pressing the clutch pedal right down . How do I adjust it is it on the same cable . Reverse always seems to crunch when putting it into gear

@DavidGarside
@DavidGarside Год назад
Hello. Thank you for your message. Assuming the clutch adjustment details are the same on your car as mine, it sounds like you have too much free play in the cable....not counting any other fault of course. If it was me on my car, I'd adjust it as per the above video, but it would be at your own risk. My Alto also sometimes crunched a little, or wouldn't go into reverse each time without lifting and pressing the clutch again. If in any doubt, it would be worth asking your local garage to check it for you as I'm no mechanic. Also check your instruction manual as it may give the clutch adjustment details. Hope this helps.
@DavidGarside
@DavidGarside Год назад
Just seen your update. Just make sure that if your manual says an amount of free play, adjust it again to that figure otherwise you may get clutch slip or wear the clutch out quicker. Glad you seem to have it sorted.

Excellent good informative video. My Alto 2014 has 65000 miles on the clock. My clutch is starting to go I think. The engine is racing a little when start off till I pick up speed. It's like it's waiting to catch up I done the clutch test saw on RU-vid as well. I put it in 2nd gear with hand brake on reved the engine. But the engine never cut out so I presume I may need a new clutch. I will check the play like yr video shows and make the adjustment. I hope this may give me some more time. Anyone know what a garage would charge for a new clutch? Thanks
@DavidGarside
@DavidGarside 4 года назад
Thank you, much appreciated. If the adjustment doesn't fix the 'slipping', then yes I would think a new clutch will be needed. I would contact your local garage for a price, and also some of the companies that advertise on line. If you know a local mechanic, you could buy the clutch kit from a local factor and get him to fit it....that may be a bit cheaper. Good luck, and thanks again.

@@DavidGarside Thanks David will try and adjust the clutch cable I think you said play should be about 15mm. (I'm feet and inches person learnt all the imperial measuments at school, then to fit in with the EU they buggered it up for everyone, still the USA still uses them could move there lol) I had a brilliant local mechanic when I was in North London. He never caught me and was a trained engineer. The best mechanic I'd ever used. One man band small lock up garage on an industrial estate. Got him after asking the local council MOT testing station where I could find a good honest mechanic. . I was getting over the top prices and unprofessional services for years. I used this guy for over 30 years even when I moved up here north east Essex 80 miles away by the coast 12 years ago, I still booked my car in with him and stayed at family's home. London had changed beyond recognition in my life and is pretty well dangerous with no go areas. Anyway got to bit the bullet and try and find someone honest local. Thanks again for yr very good video I'm sure it will help lot of people out take care. I've used that monicker as my name cause I've comment a lot on political matters like why has it taken over 4 years to leave the EU. And many other issues I'm an armchair warrior lol you take care
@DavidGarside
@DavidGarside 4 года назад
Hi Spartacus. 15mm is about half an inch, which should be at the pedal like shown in the video. I still use my main Suzuki dealership (family run business) down here as I've know them for 21 years plus.... I've taught several of the family to drive over the years. I know how valuable a small local mechanic can be so well worth trying to find one near you, athough I can understand your loyalty to him. The only problem with being so far away is if you get a sudden problem that needs sorting quickly. I'm not much of a politician but I think if Cameron and May hadn't faffed around so much.... we'd have been out ages ago.... Boris should have taken over from Cameron I think.

@@DavidGarside Thanks for all yr help might adjust cable later today or tomorrow just so hot only using it locally. Yeah it's to far to drive down to London now, but I had so much confidence in this guy it was worth its while. Even when. I'd had an old banger and the slave clinders were rusted up out came a disc cutter to get the old one off. No job was too much trouble for him. He was a trained Nissan engineer\mechanic. All the women staff from the local council office block used him because of his reputation and honesty. Also he was not a top up merchant plus you knew the job was going to get done properly. Just tried calling him for some advice but he probably under a car working might catch him in the morning. Was going to put it to him that I'd make it worth his while if h ed considered a home repair. But I know he Probably say no but some mechanics do this when they are winding down and getting rid overhead costs of renting industrial units. Anyway I'll get an estimate from Suzuki dealers about 15 miles from me and Lookers also same area. It's been such a good reliable car no tax and good on fuel. I just don't want it bodge up its only six years old the last car I had was a Fiat Uno for 22 years in immaculate condition 120,000 miles on the clock I get my money's worth I know! Lol. So I've only done half that and had it 6 years but it a good drive and very nippy the Suzuki Alto shame they moved onto a newer model. As for Boris we will have to wait and see. THE BEST PM WE HAVE NEVER HAD is waiting in the wings and I'd put a tenner on him Nigel Farage leading the Brexit Party doing something even more spectacular than their European Election win. So its up to Boris to get his finger out. Thank again David

Yep, nothing beats a good old hands on mechanic. One other little top when you adjust it.....after you've loosened the locknut, make sure the threaded section doesn't turn while you're turning the adjuster nut itself. On my last little tweak, I had to hold the threaded cable section as it was trying to turn with the nut. I took the nut off and cleaned and greased the threads as they'd got a bit dirty. It's a great little car. 83000+ in mine as I use it for driving instruction. I had s new clutch about 35000 miles due to a few faulty release bearings having to be changed. When they did the last one I paid for a new plate and diaphragm to be put in as well. It would be interesting to know how much the new clutch would cost via dealer and private, so would you let me know when you find out please. Nigel would have been great...they should have had him in as negotiator from the start.....

Hello, David. Thank you for such informative videos. I recently had a clutch kit replaced, but it is starting to slip under the top as it has been. In your experience, is this normal or could it be different with this car?
@DavidGarside
@DavidGarside 10 месяцев назад
Hello. If it were me, I would just check the cable adjustment as it may have just bedded in a little. If it's not that, I would go back to the garage where you had it done. Hopefully it's just a small adjustment needed. Fingers crossed for you. Thank you for watching. 👍

Hello. Yes, it does shake a bit when on tick-over (idling). If it's excessive, then it may be one of the engine mounts. It might be worth getting a garage to check it for you. Thank you for watching.

Sir, can You tell me please how many miles per gallon you can drive in the city cycle? I got this alto but 2011 and I can do only 36.7m/gallon which is about 15 miles less than manufacturer says. I think it may be lambda sensor but I gonna do diagnostic to find out what may be the reason.Have good day ;)
@DavidGarside
@DavidGarside 5 лет назад
Hello. Thank you for your message. I use my Alto for driving instruction and the fuel consumption can be up to 55 mpg out of town, and whilst in town practising parking manoeuvres etc, it can be as low as 38mpg. Mainly though, general driving gives me around 46 to 50mpg on average per tank full. I do get my car serviced regularly as per the manual so I'm thinking it's normal. I can get much better fuel consumption than my students though as they tend to be heavy on the gas and brakes which can make a big difference. Get your car checked and if there's a problem that could be the reason. Hope this helps.

Sir, I have changed o2 pre cat sensor which is responsible for sending data to the ECU which then calculates and determines how best to achieve the ideal mixture of air and fuel at combustion. This helped me to improve economy from 36.7 MPG to 50.2 MPG in city cycle. Maybe that can help You to save some money too :) Have good day.
