Coming from a regular car, these Jimnys aren't as smooth riding with the short wheelbase and solid axles, and there is noticeable body lean around corners, but ultimately they seem stable. The steering has a dead zone around the straight ahead position so small movements don't unsettle it at higher speeds. If you apply lots of throttle exiting corners in the wet they can oversteer a bit but it's simple to correct. I've done long journeys in mine and don't find it too tiring. It maintains 120km/h easily enough although the engine revs are relatively high at about 4,000 RPM. It feels happier at about 100km/h. For an off road vehicle fuel economy isn't too bad, I calculated about 7.5l/100km on longer trips.
Hi. Is it really horrible to drive on motorway like many say? I mean. I know that is louder etc. but can you take your Jimny let say once a year to the french Alps for a trip and still be ok? I did that 16th hours journey with my Mazda Mx5 and was fine. And this was also not a car for motorways. But overall was quite universal in use. How it is with Jimny. Is that kind of journey would be very painful because of, for example seats or handling? I know it's loud as Mazda was but that doesn't bother me.
I personally don't think the Jimny's as bad on the motorway as many make out. It is louder than a typical modern car, sitting at about 4,000 RPM at 70 MPH/112 KM/H in 5th gear, but I don't find it excessively loud. The steering definitely isn't as responsive as in most new cars and the handling limits are lower, but I don't find a problem keeping up with traffic.The seats are ok and I haven't found it too uncomfortable on longer journeys.I've seen videos where Jimnys have been taken to 100 MPH/160 KM/H on the autobahn but it does take a while to accelerate and feels like it's being pushed harder at high speeds than most newer cars.The Jimny would definitely be a big change from an MX5 in terms of driving feel, the steering and gearshift are a lot less direct and it's obviously not as quick, but on the plus side it'd happily tackle the Alpine roads in all weather conditions.I'd say a one or two long trips in a year would be fine. I haven't yet had the chance to drive a new 2019 Jimny but it seems like they have made it quite a bit more refined. The ride is apparently smoother and it's now got a lot more features including cruise control to make long journeys easier.
@@AndyT001 thanks for your reply. I am aware thay handling is different than Mazda. Not sharp and precise. Today I drive normal hatchback. The thing is I am thinking of buying Jimny to drive around the town and take it to for a longer ride from time to time. I read thay many people couldn't find a proper position because of the seats, pedals offset and not adjustable steering column. But, 20 years ago 90% of cars did not have that and people could drive them.
@@rubiks_cube78 Very true! I find the Jimny pretty good around town. The high driving position and big windows mean the visibility is great and it fits into very tight parking spaces. The low gearing is also good for around town. I'm just under 1.8m tall and I don't find a problem with the driving position. I haven't really noticed the pedals being offset and the driver's seat goes back far enough for me to get comfortable for longer journeys.
As a Jimny owner for almost 12 years now, I can easily say no. Jimny is not a car that is meant to drive in high speeds. In motorways, I always go around 90km/h. Sure you hear the voice of the engine but that does not bother me a bit because it's not that loud like people say. I was on a camping trip/expedition and it was a 7 day/3000km. trip. Only thing that bothered me was there wasn't enough space for all of my gear but please consider that was an extreme situation. Never thought about selling it. I intend to keep the Jimny as long as I'm alive.
I love mine and it makes a great second car. It'd be very different to the BMW and obviously won't handle as well on the road, but I still find the Jimny fun to drive in its own way. It's also brilliant in snow and very capable off road. I'd definitely suggest test driving one to see what you think of it.
Stayed in 2WD the whole time for this drive. The centre differential is locked when running in 4WD so it's only really for off road use and very slippery conditions.
That's a pretty fair summary. It is bouncier than most modern cars but I'm used to it and personally don't think it's that bad. I've taken it on some longer road trips and always felt fine after several hours driving.
