I own a Jeep Wrangler Sahara and having been off road in both an FJ and a Wrangler, I can tell you that the Toyota is a better buy for one simple reason: reliability! When your Wrangler is in the shop or broken down on the trail and that FJ is still chugging on, you'll realize why Toyota is the #1 auto company in the world and why Jeeps like Land Rovers have a high failure rate. Toyota is just a better investment, you'll have it longer.
I own one, and I don't know why they go on about the fuel consumption. Most 4x4's have the same fuel economy around the 15mile/ gallon city and 18 mile highway. It's the same as the 4 runner, jeep, f150 etc... The ride on pavement is better than the 4 runner.... well, better than the older 4 runners from 1996-2002. There is less roll. It's a shame they changed the 4 runner in 2003, because it's still my favourite vehicle. Reliable and tough. The FJ is certainly a serious off-road vehicle and I like the way it performs. I would never consider buying a Jeep.
The FJ is a hilarious endeavor which somehow still fills a niche in the target market. My folks bought one back in 2013 and love it. Although the suicide rear doors are a disaster in my opinion, they have no one to haul so it doesn't really matter. The option of getting it offroad and doing well is a nice addition. Still - for a causal DD, I believe better options exist - especially with that shitty mpg.
the fj is nooooot a family vehicle, its really meant for an off road enthusiast, those back seats really are either to throw your jacket backpack laptop and mcdonalds garbage, or suitable for if some friends randomly need a ride to the mall.
We can't argue with Jeep's off-road ability. But the Toyota 4Runner and the FJ (based on the 4Runner) are pretty good too, they just don't have the edge Jeep has.
They need to bring back the new FJ Cruiser "Extended" with ample space in both the back seat leg room and trunk. Take out the suicide doors, and bring in both moon roof and sun roof. As well as adding all the high tech gadgets and gears on the dash and front board.
You guys spend more time to talk about the interior and forgot to give FJ a chance to show off its off- road ability which is what the car is build for :) The real FJ owners would careless about the small backseat and visibility.
So these two people who are reviewing this FJ will never ever go off road except across the mall speed bumps and think they are wheeling. These to yuppie wanna be's should not be reviewing this capable off road machine. These were not the people that should have been reviewing the FJ. Its not a family weekend wagon. Its not a commuter car. Its not a milage machine either. ITS FOR OFF ROAD DRIVING, SNOW, MUD, ROCKS, SAND AND WATRER CROSSING. WTF?.......
Toyota is overrated and overpriced? Lol, nothing about that statement even makes sense. Toyota, year after year, wins in best value. Meaning its high quality, and the best price. When it comes to reliability, Jeep doesn't even compare to Toyota.
Man. I really wanted to like this vehicle because of the price. But I need more rear leg room and decent fuel economy. Also, I know Toyota's last. Sigh. Guess I'll have to go with the Jeep Wrangler long wheel base.
the hep 3.6 is NOT better than the toyota 4.0. The jeep v6 is a dog. its pathetically slow. in every way. the 4.0 equipped toyotas are way faster than their competition
What a poor review, Entunes is no tunes, I have it, it is a poor substitute for a gps unit with lifetime free upgrades, Toyota does little to support it and even less use are the features. Gas milage, they all get about the same in 4x4 units, 15 - 17 MPG. Backseat does suck and getting in/out, tuff. They are good off road, do have poor visibility and like all factory 4x4 units, do require some aftermarket add-ons if your serious about getting off road. Front seat travel is nice though.
congausa1 I don't know as much as you probably, but I used to sell Toyota and they are overpriced based only their name, the FJ cruiser is nothing but a disguised Tacoma. Based on the time I spent selling them. Once again I'm not trashing the product is just that Toyota is overrated. Is my opinion nothing
