The other day my blade engagement cable (OEM Part Number 946-04173E amzn.to/32rsWVG ) broke at the spring on my 2013 Troy-Bilt Bronco Riding Mower (Model 13YX78KS011). The parts came in and I had time to replace it.

9-2-2022…… 🙋🏻‍♂️ I have a very used 2011 Troybilt work horse Xp 46” and my engagement cable broke on the handle end. Couldn’t see up in there very good, so on rear end I cut a square hole in the housing so as to see where the cable fit onto the lever. I took an smaller S hook and crimped it around the pewter end, then put the other end of S hook into lever. Then crimped it really good. This worked since I didn’t have a new cable on hand. My only other problem is that I’m having trouble with it not disengaging. When the spring for that was in place, it wouldn’t engage. So I just took that spring off for now. Blades continue to turn even though I’ve disengaged them. For that fix I just apply some force to the left deck pulley. At some point, I’ll get my mower to my repair guy and fix it correctly. As long as it’ll cut grass, I’m Happy 😍. My mower won’t cut on height setting 1 or 2. Doesn’t make sense if those aren’t cutting heights. Just for lowering deck I guess. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸👍🏻💪🦾🗽

I have a similar 2013 Troy Built mower.It's just the larger 20hp/46" cut.Uses the same replacement cable.I just wanted to add to this and for most of the videos on the cable issue.We all now know the cable is small between the heavy engage lever and the tensioner pulley.So it is the first to go.I got in the habit, before i mow, to check the pulley.It gets tight due to grass and moisture in the lever that the spring pulls(the pulley) to engage the blades.Clean it and add a shot of lube,like WD40 to get pulley to move back and forth easily.This will help save on stress on the cable and will break less often.

Thanks. I needed to know how the end of the cable connected to the handle assembly. To be honest, the camera doesn't show how hard it is to see. You're working inside a metal box. Great video. Suggestion; always put nuts/bolts in the cup holder, or some type of cup, box, etc. Having something magnatized is a life saver. I ALWAYS drop nuts/bolts, screws.

I just got my old cable off by cutting the hook off, losing the rubber and sliding a small hose clamp down to collapse the "ears". Sort of a pain to get a socket in for the clamp, but it worked.This was on a Craftsman LT2000 ('13) w/ a 46" deck. Also, mine broke like Mr. Meyers - the SPRING snapped in the middle.

Make sure it's the right cable ... was assured i got a 2016 Pony 42 cable... no not same length or end piece. A cable clamp, a cut cable, a couple readjustments and a small zip tie and a 15 minute job took 2 hours. Or just normal life for me... Fixed loose steering bracket , new blades and i mowed. Good video though. My last Troy , motor is solid, but the rest is fix at least two issues a season besides oil, cleaning, belts and battery maintenance. Have a Huskee too that also needs a engagement cable, all the MTD fun.

There is a lot of tension on the top connector to put some grease on it when you install it. The tension wears away at it usually snaps off.

Troy Bilt Bronco cable attached (under the seat) to engagement lever with a small bolt and cable wire had a "O" fitting......now all the replacements have the "Z" attachment on the end of the cable to attach to the engagement lever......the "Z" system is creating a lot of chaos and havoc due to the "Z" part easily snapping in half......leaving a mower--- without---- running blades....... also be careful, the cable itself seem an inch shorter, thus, bending the metal on lever where the "Z" and lever attach.....the "bend" (damage" will cause the lever "not" to push the the safety button, giving the mower a new "no start" issue! (I had to duck tape my safety switch button down [for now])... arrg!

@mikemccall4855 6 лет назад
Thanks for your response. That's the problem I ran into -- I've been trying both to feel around and attached the z-hook with one hand. I'm thinking it might be easier to remove the body from the frame so I can see to make the connections correctly and without breaking the hook.
@NMercy
@NMercy 6 лет назад
If I remember correctly from doing it, there's a hole it goes in from the inside (towards battery) through to the outside (towards the body), then because of the curve it just kind of drops down... But it's been over a year since I did it so a little foggy.
@mikemccall4855
@mikemccall4855 6 лет назад
The z-hook on the replacement cable was a little too large for the hole in the lever. I filed down the z-hook just a little using sand paper until it fit the hole and dropped into place. It didn't take much time or effort before it reduced just enough to fit. Mission accomplished on this part of the job. Thanks for your help, John.

thank you so much for the video....like others there is nothing from manufactuer on how to properly run the pto cable. even tho I own a newr craftsman it is basically the same. And like others my cable will break sometimes the same day i install other times will last. One problem I cannnot find a for sure answer is does the cable go under the belt and above the metal rod to attach to pulley? or over all or under all? in addition one more question......if once installed and I start the mower the blades start with the engine....errrrrrr.....hate this.... any idea what ive done wrong? lever not engaged .....you arre awesome to show all the detail so just don't listen to those whom complain.....you've obviously helped quite a few of us in the same boat. Thanks!!!!

Sorry I didn't get back sooner, didn't get a notification about the comment until today for some reason. About minute 26:40 I did a follow up on the PTO cable placement. I definitely went under the belt, pretty sure went under as much as I could. If the mower blades are starting with the engine, trying to remember exactly how it works, but I believe it makes the cable tight, so it's probably related to the previous question, and going under will probably fix that as well (or the PTO cable is too short). Let me know if this helps, otherwise I can try and dig around under there and see exactly what I did.

Without seeing the mower, I would first check and make sure that the cable that was just replaced is connected to the correct spot on the handle and the correct spot on the deck. If this appears to be correct, I would then have somebody else pull the engage lever while I watch the deck to see what it is doing. If it's not pulling the part on the deck that tightens the belt at all (like not even trying to tighten) I would begin to think something might be wrong with the new cable. If it's trying to pull the the part that tightens the belt, then I would run through and make sure that the cable is going everywhere it should be, since the cable has to be at the correct beginning location to make it actually work. If it's pulling the part that tightens the belt, but it's just not going tight enough, I would first make sure that the deck is attached to the correct spot on the frame of the mower. If it is, then I would make sure the belt is put on the deck correctly.

There just isn't enough room on these imitation "tractors" to perform the endless belt and cable replacements it takes to get one through a season.My neighbor gave me her like new Bronco and a yard kart full of spare belts and a half dozen pto cables.Ive got a 92 craftsman that has held up like an army tank but this troybilt has me frequently working blind to replace the parts it pukes due to not being able to fit a wrench and hand anywhere under this polished turd..Somethings bad wrong with the deck engagement butso far I find no damage or misalignment that makes activating the blades cause such a stressful reaction on the components. Thanks for the input. I have since gotten a tri-pod that holds phone in the past 5 or 6 years.

This is my wife's tablet just so you know. This is a terrible how to video. You couldn't keep the camera where you were working so a person wouldn't be able to do this job if they had no mechanical ability. I just wanted to see if the deck had to come off. In the future you need a cameraman.

You need to apologize to this man. He took the time to make a video to help others....ALL YOU DO IS CRITICIZE. Did you make any video to help others? I think not. IF you do not have something nice to say then just go away and keep your mouth SHUT!

Sometimes the best advice comes from the crappiest-shot videos. Suck it up and deal.
