As a daily driver, give me the enjoyment of manually shifting every day over a slightly improved 0-60. When are you ever legitimately going from a dead stop to 60 mph?

With APR stage 1 I could totally do 60mph in 2nd gear, sure if you buy the golf R you can't keep it with the 256 Hp, this engine is capable of miracles. With few 100 of dollars you can get 300 Hp just working on the ECU. It's a pitty that such a nice car is diminished by these videos... And btw my grandma could shift faster than this guy....

The golf R takes 5.6 seconds to get from 0-60. Give it to someone who can launch it properly and reach 60 in 2nd and you'll see.

The power difference is more than likely due to two main factors. Emissions and fuel octane availability. Getting the Golf to near or more than 300hp is probably only an ecu flash away. The ST makes an easy 300 plus with only a flash and an intake.

whats the point of buying a car like this with a dsg? are you really racing? are you competing for money? the whole point is to have fun. is it fast? yes. why do you have to time it and beat some other car's time? if you want an automatic, just buy a toyota yaris. i just want something relatively fast that sounds good, has a nice interior, and the awd isnt for hairpin turns on a track and launching from a cold start, its for snow and rain.

You need to get the revs up and drop the clutch in first. 0-60 in 8 seconds in a Golf R is atrocious.

I think he said the Golf was AWD.. That would add to the price. Still even at sea level.. maybe 7's You could buy a Impreza STI for that price or less and keep the AWD too... Or a WRX even is faster than that I think.

Yep, it was designed in Europe, but it's now being assembled in the US - so, it's as close as we can get to a hot hatch with American bones.

True but I hate to say this since I am a fanboy of Ford cars, but really American Ford is shit, Taurus, old Fusion,old Focus,even Explorer,Edge, the only good thing of American Ford is Mustang,Flex,F-150s Escape and thats it nothing else is good, I really wish ford redesign Taurus,Edge etc with the help of its European division just like the Fusion and Focus to bring quality to cars,even the Stang the interior is shit and live axl is shit,2015 Stang is my next hope,Fords Auto box too is very bad

VW is preparing 2015 Golf R with 205 hp from 2.0 l turbo with 300 ft pound torque right from 1750 rpm that willbe a blast of power,but sadly Ford is working in the Focus RS(king of hot hatches till 2006) the new RS will have 2.3 l ecoboost i4 with 341 bhp@6000 rpm and 324 ft pound @ 2500 rpm it has electronically controlled LSD as well,I believe it will smoke all hot hatches and AWD subaru and Mitsubishi and some merc A 45 AMG and BMW M135i as well

Golf and Volkswagen and Audi are the best in the world when it comes to AWD traction, nothing beats it,the 2015 GTI is the best hot hatch in the world sure but there are niggles to it as well, Looks BORING inside and OUT(best described as high quality Boring cabin inside), the stability control is On all the time,so no Scandinavian flicks, Engine note is BORING,super high price tag, if all these dosent matter GOLF is the best A-B car in the world

who cares, you have 3 years/36000 miles bumper to bumper warranty, and you can even extend it to 10 years/ 120,000 miles. You get 3 years/ 36,000 miles free maintaince. And i don't think anyone would plan to keep a hatchback for that long, cause you would eventually get a more pure sportscar, like Audi S5 or BMW m3

Buy the R add some goodies from APR and you have a better car than an STI. I own an STI an i love it but the Golf R wins with the Interior, Comfort an electronics package. But the Golf R really needs about 330 crank hp. There not the fastest cars but there very nice cars. An Forget the ST i wan't ford to give us an AWD RS.

no offense but this car is way faster than your posted times, i dont think your calibrated is dead on, u should be using a laser radar to judge its speed. this time is more than a second slower than a normal gti... something is wrong and its not the car.. and the 1mile above sea level isnt the full reason why its this slow.

Yup but St has lack of traction at winter and wet surface and the rear end is mobile even at descent speeds of 90 mph and its sure a hot hatch the best in terms of value but not the best product, i think the Ford should have added a LSD to the ST that would have made it a real hot hatch now its an incomplete product

gas emissions regulations are practically the same now between EU and USA. I think the biggest difference is in fuel. USA regular gas has less octane than in Europe in fact some cars in the US must run on premium while in europe they don't.

r has more weight and retuned gear ratios, otherwise itself the GTI manual aint that good, the DSG is the faster one, that gets to 60 under 6 seconds when i tested it in Glasgow UK

its starting from 57000 AUD or 52000 USD here in Australia for 2012 vwR... US is one of the cheapest to buy car in the whole world and it is an excellent car to own. DSG plus a simple remap $600 to $1000 in USA I guess depending on a brand name or a private tuner will add at least %30 more power atw and it ll be safe fast and much more fun.

The air is much denser at sea level and the further up you go in altitude the thinner the air gets. So cars run much more efficiently at sea level and therefore accelerate faster at sea level than one mile above sea level. Most car magazines test their cars at sea level to get the fastest times possible

Yup thats a kink in the handling department of the ST and if they can eliminate torq steer and the stability issue with some better electronics itself it would be great, the old GTI with no diff is 2 more stable than ST, I drove both of them, the old GTI had far less power but it was far more stable as well, the ST will nearly kill you on a rainy day if you drive hard but GTI stays on the road somehow, the ST is is like a RWD mannered FWD car, thats a good thing for purists not 4 daily drivers

The higher the elevation, the less dense the air is"less HP", so I'm guessing that for this guys elevation you probably have to take away 2 to 3 seconds from their posted times to get a rough sea level estimate. Just backing you guys since some have never driven at higher altitudes and noticed a loss of power.

The Focus ST did a much better 0-60 time than the Golf R! I've never liked the Golf however the MkV GTI is probably the best looking Golf.The upcoming MKVII looks old,tired and Korean....just a boring car to look at although ,VW have apparently made improvements to the ride of the car which have been universally praised by reviewers.

Yeah I'm guessing that must be a big factor, because my Mazda 3 Skyactiv Hatchback which is only 155HP can do 0-60 in about 7.8 seconds when I push her hard and shift properly. So it's got to have something to do with the above sea level climate.

what is going on here? My Golf R HAS NEVER bogged down?! I walked off from every car in a race me when stock.I now have APR stage one flash and Carbonio with K&N, I beat every car, honda mod, mustangs, challenger, 370z and camero.. the only car I heard that can take the 2.0t is 6.1 hemmi..and lets not forget, at 80 mph=28 mpg...& av. 30 mpg. ALL WHEEL DRIVE, family car with still MORE potential for HP, and more way more room than sti.. check out goapr.com to see what a R can do.

0-62 (100kmh) is 5.7 for the manual and 5.5 with dsg her ein germany. there are several tests, for example from fifth gear, that show DSG doing that time on every launch, but with manual most are about a second slower as it seems to be nearly impossible to launch it correctly (but many AWD cars are). add a good second due to power loss at high altitude and you are at about 8 seconds as here done by roman.

You're right, it was just over 90 degrees Fahrenheit too. We tested the Solo DL against Gtech and a few 0 to 60 apps; it's the most accurate by far. It uses a minimum of three satellites for barrings and has a proven track record.
